Rochas-Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has requested universities in the country and other institutions of higher learning to stop making credit passes in English language and Mathematics compulsory for those seeking admission.

He lamented that the practice of making the two subjects compulsory for admissions has aborted the ambition of many brilliant students who could, for one reason or the other, not credit both subjects, to further their education.

The Governor, who spoke yesterday when the Registrar of the National Examination Council, NECO, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba visited him at the Government House Owerri, with his team, noted that the time has come for all relevant bodies to help the education sector and assist students with the ambition of pursuing higher education.

I agree with him, the president of Nigeria didn't pass mathematics too.. Yet he is running one of the largest economy in the world.

why set standards at all? We are already living in a free-for-all country.

Why build foundations when we can just lay the blocks on each other and live in the house ? grin

English and maths are basic, a student do it for about 16years and still fails it then you say the person is intelligent? ogbeni stop showing your level of stupidity, please stop embarrassing our lovely state. Note: Imo is filled with intelligent people, we just have an Hausa goat for governor, please bear with us cause this is what I call 'trying times'

So how different language textbooks should be created then?
3? 10? Or should we just create 200 different language textbooks for all the languages in Nigeria.
Your idea is good but it is not practical. The reason English is our official language is because not everyone speaks the same local language. It would be unfair to force minority groups to speak a major language just because you prefer it that way. And even if we decided to teach in our major languages how would one person who has only learnt Igbo communicate with someone who can only speak Yoruba in business? As long as Nigeria still exist, our official language will continue to be English. Even if Biafra was created with the South South and South East, the official language would also still be English. Just because something works in one country doesn't mean it will work in others. Africa is too diverse a continent to nationwide traditional languages in all the countries.

Everything you asked here was already being done before our unfortunate contact with Europe. Why do you think Africans were not learning before we met Europeans?. It's a pity, years of slavery and colonialism have destroyed your history and your intellectual capabilities, such that you now believe Nigerians are incapable of learning in our own languages.

Let me ask you. How many European countries speak the same language?.

Doesn't Yorubas have their own language?. Doesn't Ibos have their own language?. Doesn't Hausas have their own language?. Doesn't Efik and Ibibios have their own language?. e.t.c.

I fail to understand why you think each language can't be used for learning, when all that is required is translate the existing textbooks to our native languages. What's so difficult about that?.

Our natural national language is Pidgin English, not British English!. British English is language forced down the throat of our forefathers, a language we didn't bargain for. So, we'll use Pidgin as a national language instead.

Why do you think learning would not exist in Nigeria without English language?. Why?.

why don't we just remove testing all together then?

maybe we should just ask our kids to simply walk into the universities of their choice and start learning on a first come, first serve basis.
