Blood cholesterol is considered to be raised if a blood test shows that the level of total cholesterol is ≥ 5.0mmol/l. The safe threshold for maximum Total cholesterol is lower if a person is considered to be at risk of heart disease and other related illnesses. Raised blood cholesterol is caused by both genetic and environmental factors. Familial hypercholesterolemia is a rare genetic disorder characterized by very high LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol
and early cardiovascular diseases, which runs in families. Environmental factors such as obesity and dietary choices are another cause for raised blood cholesterol. A diet high in saturated fat can increase blood cholesterol levels. Other illnesses, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and hypothyroidism may promote raised blood cholesterol.
