It beats my imagination that after 10 years of continuous democracy in Nigeria, the PDP politicians are still bent on sharing the money meant for the people.
In the Month of March the 18 LG collectively collect 1 ,894,182,550.20 and the least having 85m.I wonder what they spend the money on.
Constitutionally the LG are suppose in collaboration with the state government stimulate economic growth, but reverse is the case in Edi state.

BENIN—THE gulf between Edo State government and chairmen of the 18 local councils over deductions from their allocations has widened, with the council chairmen rejecting cheques for the payment of May allocation from the Federation Accounts.

The council chairmen are alleging that they would be in a serious financial predicament, since they would not be able to pay salaries with what was left of the allocation which they placed at between N9m and N10m.

State Chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Mr. Felix Akhabue, who confirmed the development to newsmen in Benin yesterday, said that they decided to reject the allocation, alleging that the state government was deducting withholding tax from the allocation without paying them 10% of IGR as stipulated by law.

“The state government is claiming that we owe them withholding tax, not by this present administration, but by our predecessors.

“We believe that if we owe, we need to pay. Our position is that well, we are owing you, we are ready to pay, the state government is also owing us because by law, the state government is supposed to pay us 10% of IGR. We asked them to give us what they own us,” Akhabue said.

Insisting that over 70% of the council could no longer pay salaries, Akhabue noted that the absorption of UBE teachers by the state government has added another burden to their expenditure.

“If we need teachers, it is our responsibility to write that we need teachers. The teachers would have been taken to secondary schools. Now there are many teachers that we don’t need; we didn’t asked for teachers. They have also started deducting their money from our allocation.

“Workers are also reacting that they should not deduct their money as tax from source. They are supposed to deduct their money at the point of collecting salary. They are not saying they were not paying.

“State council workers are telling us that they cannot allow their money to be collected at source. Workers are now paying tax without collecting salary,” he stressed.

The state commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs could not be reached for comments as calls to his phone were not answered.
