Settings goals for the New Year give life direction and destination individual want to find himself. It is said that it is not speed that matters but the right direction to get to the destination. For instance, if you are heading toward Ibadan and you are on a high speed on Badagry Expressway; unarguably, you are on a speed but you have missed the direction; that is what your goals do.

Nothing changes in the New Year but you. In fact, 2016 is an extension of 2015 year. The question now is ‘What are you setting to better the coming year?’.

Before setting your goals you have to consider the following:

Decide: Think of something you want to do and work towards it. This is where you have to put on your thinking cap and determine to take a step – a bold and risky decision. If you are not ready to take that risk in your decision, you are not ready to leave your current position and take up the challenges; moreover that is RISKY

Write it down: Writing your goals down will not only ring a bell on what you are to achieve but will also help you to track your progress in the execution of the set goals. In addition, it allows you to re-strategize the unaccomplished goals or those that seems to be taking time.

Tell someone – Telling someone about the goal seems to increase the likelihood of gluing to them. Before telling someone, be sure and convinced about your set goals because they might want to derail you from the goal. However, open your mind to good suggestion and ideas.

Streamline your goals - this simply means breaking down your goals into smaller ones; especially big goals. It is said that the bigger a goal look, the more it create panic and vague it looks; It is imperative to split it down to smaller pieces for it to be achievable. For instance, If I plan to write 50 book by the end of 2016. This might look too big to me but when I started streamlining it to the types and categories of write-ups I really want to write such as Inspirational – 12, Educational – 6, Business – 10 etc. the Inspirational will be once in a month while the Educational is once in two months etc.

Plan your first step – we are conversant with the saying that a race of thousand miles start with a step. Yes, take your first step from the moment the idea is conceived to the action stage. Perhaps, it might be to research on ‘how can it be done...’ just take the first step and action and let the rest to come after.

Keep going - If someone tells you that working towards your goals will come without challenges, I think that person wake up from the dreamland. The ability to PERSEVERE and SUSTAIN your goals amid challenges makes it successful. It might be frustrating and tough but never give-up. Think outside the box when you are faced with challenges, seek some experts hand or the idea of the experienced, take a break when it seems no solution is coming, and so on and so on. But never give-up

Celebrate – when you reach a goal, celebrate it. Call on those that helped you out. Celebrate it and focus back to the ones that are yet to be accomplished

In all, keep your goal SMART: S - Specific, M - Measurable or Meaningful, A - Action-Oriented, R - Relevant or Rewarding, T - Time-bound.

We shall all meet at the top in 2016. Happy New Year in Advance
