Let's add everyone's opinion together, achebe's simplicity make the children to wonder soyinka's complexity dazzles best of writers. You have to learn from achebe before soyinka and never the other way round. Achebe had partially retired long ago while soyinka still use the best of professors in his stage dramas. Well let the white judge because we will be biased. Achebe's book was there with its fame but didn't attain nobel status while soyinka's own came latter and attain it. Except if u will prove that they were biased. Which one did they contact when the last dictionary dictionary was reviewed. Soyinka or achebe ....judge

This question is the same as asking "Kanu Nwankwo and Jay Jay Okocha", who is better. Forget Kanu's awards. In the field of play who is more a footballer?

Topsido: i enjoy Wole Soyinka more because he does nt patronise my intellect, like Achebe, rather, he trusts me to get his point.

I find your statement very condescending. He does not patronize your intellect? Just because you think you are intelligent or have a good grasp of the english language doesn't mean everyone around you should. This is why I consider achebe a better author. The that he communicates easily with his audience irregardless of the age or stage of learning makes him a superior writer.

They are bith respected writers but I respect Professor Chinua Achebe more because of his simplicity. Using cumbersome words in writing doesn't necessary make someone a better writer. Achebe writes for all ages. I read two of Achebe's novels when I was only nine. But reading Soyinka's works is a Hercullean task. Many people think Soyinka is better because of his complexity in writing. I don't think so. If they are to be compared, then it should be based on the achievement of their works. None of Soyinka's books ever sold as much as THINGS FALL APART. Every one even mad men on the street knows about THINGS FALL APART. But I don't think any of Soyinka's books is that popular. Winning a nobel prize doesn't mean much. Kudos to Achebe...........

I prefer Chinua Achebe. I'm neither yoruba nor ibo. I developed interest in reading during my preteen days. I read a couple of Nigerian authors. I found Wole quite fascinating in poetry. However, Achebe and Buchi Emecheta made me want to read more african stuff. It reached deep inside my heart. I never got such feeling with Wole, albeit I did see a level of high intelligence. I read Arrow of God countless number of times. The Lion and Jewel I tried to read but stopped halfway many times. My mum motivated me, I mean she kept talking about Lakunle and his complex dictions, or I would never had gotten to the end of the book. And one more thing, I am a great admirer of the yorubas. But right now, Achebe gets my vote.

Sorry for quoting but let me ask?
If Honourable Patrick writes a novel someday, what sort of appraisal would it receive considering his use of diction?
You are just saying Wole is better because he uses more complex diction?
Back then in secondary school, we were taught that one of the essentials of a good literary work is usage of simple diction.

What's the essence of reading a book that necessitates you using the dictionary atleast up to four times in just a sentence.

Having difficulty in deciphering the message from a work of art is totally defeating.

Has anyone heard how Prof Achebe decimated the works of Conrad, now if you do not know Conrad is held in in very high Esteem by the European Academia and for some upstart African writer to come and call Conrad a bloody racist would definitely surly whatever good will that writer has with the Europeans, and The nobel price being a soley European affair i think it's a case of gross marginalization is the reason why Achebe hasn't still gotten it, i believe he will still get it, by the way Soyinka is a great!!

@Texazzpete or whatever you called yourself, there's no need for you to be insulting. You are welcome to discuss intelligently! Soyinka is a well rounded genius -- a poet, dramatist, playwright, writer, author, producer, director, inventor (invented the Oyo state of Nigeria's Road Safety Corps that later became a national sceme), human rights activist and so on. These are some of the characteristics of a living hero. A genius! Robust. Well-rounded. And multi-dimentional. Your hero, Achebe, will  pray to even go near Soyinka's record. Or, maybe, you're one of those Americans who don't know any better! And if the Nobel Prizes are that easy to come by why hasn't your hero, Achebe, garnered one till date? Or, maybe, you can show me your own. If you're an African, you have gone gaga! If you're an American, worse still, shame on you because this African, who was born to speak Yoruba, has "re-invented" your language for you. You cannot touch him! You're the dopehead, I'm not!

Guy u are simply an Anumanu!!!

Look at dis guy.

See him vehemently defending his idiocy. And yet he is saying "...without giving in to the ugliest ills of our time, ethnocentrism..."

Broda do u now see that u lack every right, moral or otherwise, to post dis kinda poo?

Obviously ur motive is to whip up tribal sentiment. So to hell with dis!!!!

@Omogenikky, just because Achebe's Things Fall Apart is widely read in America does not make him a better writer than Soyinka. Some people are intimidated by the way Soyinka's books make you think and become more intelligent. Achebe writes mostly for little children, which was OK for me when I started learning the language of English, while Soyinka's writings intimidate even the Englishman himself. By the way, have you read any of Soyinka's books? And, mind you, Americans sometimes have to be told the difference. They don't know better! And you being a Yoruba doesn't mean that you appreciate your countryman's ability; many Yoruba don't. Please, acquaint yourself with Soyinka's writings. The man is a genius! After all, who won the Nobel Prize?

This Is one of the most shortsighted things I have read in my life, you clearly do not understand the art of storytelling. Achebe was born a storyteller and things fall apart is a book I still regard as one of the finest writings in modern history of literature
