Lassa Fever Outbreak In Rivers, Two Confirmed Dead by ijustdey: 7:12pm On Jan 05, 2016

Rivers State Government has just confirmed the outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state, which has claimed the lives of two persons so far.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Theophilous Odageme who confirmed the outbreak today in a statement enjoined the members of the public not to panic because the state government had taken a proactive measure to contain an outbreak.

The statement urged members of the public to report any of such symptoms as: persistent high fever, stooling, vomiting, bleeding from the nose, mouth and anus.

He advised members of the public to maintain good hygiene and quickly report any case of Lassa Fever to the nearest Health Centre or Hospital urgent attention.

Hmm, it is no longer funny oo. Do we have a minister of health in this country anymore? What is the person doing about this? Like sensitising the public. All they want is our money then come to the media houses and sing unimaginable music to our ears. None is ready to work except to blame their predecessors.

It was first isolated by American scientists in 1969....after two American missionaries died of a strange illness.

It is spread by a certain species of rat

It was first isolated from patients in the village of Lassa in what is now Borno state...hence the name Lassa fever.

Lassa fever has been around in Nigeria for a long time...long before Buhari was born even.

(The causative organism was isolated in 1969).

And yes...we are prepared for it....as it is local to Nigeria....and we have the trained people on ground....unlike Ebola which was imported.

Additionally....Lassa fever has a cure.Unlike Ebola.
