Hello house! sad

Actually, I just got admitted to study at the masters level in Oregon come fall; I have also gotten my visa. My plan is to jet out by August 17, first, to visit New Jersey (I've booked my ticket to Newark already), spend few days with my uncle and then book a flight and report to school.

The issue now is the Port of Entry palava, as I'm scared the officers might be concerned about me not having a ticket to Oregon... Although my port of entry would be Boston, cos that's where Emirates would drop me before connecting with a local flight to NJ; I want to know the house views on this risky waka of mine and also learn from others experiences.

Is it also true they'll know I'm going to NJ without asking me?

Please help ! Thanks.....

First of all let me state that I've been through the port of entry thrice and stopped twice for further checks. I've been stopped twice and I was on an F1 visa.

Let me state categorically that at the U. S port of ENTRY you have no rights. Even though the U. S customs and border patrol (Cbp) or anyone may tell you otherwise. Also there is serious racial profiling occurring at the poe And I will tell you my experience. While trying to get through detroit poe, there was a long queue to speak with the interviewing officer so I like every other person trying to get into the U.S was on the queue. We were over 200 on the queue yet I was the one "randomly" selected by the white U. S CBP officer patrolling to show them my passport on the queue. Then after I showed them my passport, I looked back at the queue behind me and all I saw was white faces and I immediately knew why I was the one "randomly" asked to show the patrolling cup officer my passport while on the queue. Under the US laws I bliv such racial profiling is against the law. But remember I said that when trying to enter the U. S poe just forget all your rights. So I waited till my turn to speak with the CBP officer he asked me the reason for my trip and I told him. Remember when they ask you the kind of stuff in your bag like food items etc please be very truthful. As I finished the 2 min interview and biometrics with the CBP officer at the counter I was also "randomly" selected for further checks. So they asked me to open my checked in bags. So I did. Remember that when they ask you questions like if the all the food items in your bag are yours just say yes even if you're carrying food stuff for someone else. however say you're carrying a man's suit say for your husband and you're a woman you can't claim all the clothes are yours. So after searching through all my bags and finding nothing the looked all my documents page by page. I carry all my documents with me during my travels so it took some time through look thru all. They also scanned some of them. This was the second time my documents were checked with scrutiny. Then what surprised me this time around is that they started checking my laptop and phone messages as well. They checked and checked and checked. I look at my watch at this time and knew I'd miss my connecting flight. I always go now thru u.s poe with the assumption that I'd miss my connecting flight. They spend at 40 mins looking thru my electronic devices. They also give you a document that indicates they have rights to check them whether you like it or not without any discrimination. But so far I could argue I was discriminated against based on racial or country of origin profiling. The CBP also asked for me to explain my credential etc and after a t 1 hr I made it thru. If you miss your connecting flight due to CBP further inspection the airline will most likely put you on the next flight to your destination at no charge but this may also disrupt your itinerary.

Finally remember to remain calm at poe. Mirror the cbp attitude. If they smile then smile. If frowning then you keep a straight face. Answer the questions as truthf the ully as possible, expect racial profiling and expect the possibility of missing your connecting flight.. Also make sure that the contents of your bag are easily accessible and maintain your confidence. If you have not done anything wrong you would be fine. Also remember that you may have to explain mundane stuff to the cbp because the average well educated Nigerian is better well rounded and exposed than the average American whose knowledge of the world comes only what they see on TV or Google. Also don't forget that no matter how bad Nigeria will be proud of your green passport like I'm always. Also remember that there are treaties between the U. S and Nigerians govt that will not allow cbp officers at Poe to treat you extremely bad.

Most of these maltreatment are based on our national integrity issue. The way our leaders treat at home is worst than that and they have the first hand information. So, what do you expect?

There shouldn't be any problem if you're spending few days in NJ but ensure you buy ticket for your connecting flight before leaving Nigeria.

Cocky?!

Mate, going by your profile picture, you look old enough to understand the differences between being arrogant and confident.

That i do not cower at the sight of a TSA agent, doesn't mean i am 'cocky'.

Funnily, you sounded more 'cocky' with that statement. Have a great one!

You don't have to be stupid bro to be taken for secondary inspection. Many times it's to straighten out what their system can't pick once or seem to understand

I have been taken fot secondary inspection twice

1, Edinburgh (Scotland), 2013
2, Medina (Saudi Arabia), 2016

For first, don't know the reason. For second, they took the last 3 persons on the screening queue And I happened to be one of them. I guess they were amazed at our lack of hurry and so much comfort when everyone else was in a rush. We were just gisting and waited till everyone was checked. But you wont rule out the fact that we were suspected because they "must" give extra check to Nigerians.

Hi Guys,
please advise me on what to do. I want to know if I will be deported at POe for cchanging POe and reason for travel. Using a visa a year after I was supposed to. This is my case.

I got a US Visa in september last year to go for my mate wedding in New York. Visa was issued in Sydney Australia as I am an international student here. I couldn't make the wedding because I was sick.

Now I want to go there for a short 10 day Holiday. I have a 5day tour and AirBnB booked in Los Angeles which is my POE and a return flight booked to Baltimore as well as 4 days AirBnB booked to visit my new babe & her family who is American. I intend to fly from Baltimore to Los Angeles and same day Los Angeles to Sydney. All expenses will be paid for with proof and I will travel with like $2500 cash. Will I be bounced?
