Have you ever wondered where the days of the week got their names from?

Yea Sunday and Monday are easy to guess but the remaining days of the week are weird-sounding.

Below is how the weeks were named:

SUNDAY:
Like we may have already guessed, the first day of the week is named after the Sun. The English word Sunday derived sometime before 1250 from sunedai, which itself developed from Old English (before 700) Sunnandæg (literally meaning "sun's day"wink.

MONDAY:
The English noun Monday derived sometime before 1200 from monedæi, which itself developed from Old English (around 1000) mōnandæg and mōndæg (literally meaning "moon's day"wink. The term is a Germanic interpretation of Latin lunae dies ("day of the moon"wink.

TUESDAY

The name Tuesday is derived from the Old English "Tiwesdæg" and literally means "Tiw's Day"

Tiw is the Old English form of the Proto-Germanic god- 'Tyr'. In Norse Mythology, Tyr is a god associated with law and heroic glory and is also portrayed as the son of Odin.

He is a god of war and will take mead, meat and blood for sacrifice. If a warrior carved the rune Tîwaz on his weapon he would be dedicating it to Týr.

WEDNESDAY:
The name Wednesday continues Middle English Wednesdei. Old English still had wōdnesdæg, which would be continued as *Wodnesday (but Old Frisian has an attested wednesdei). It is named after the Germanic god- Woden, known widely as Odin.

The name is a calque of the Latin dies Mercurii "day of Mercury", reflecting the fact that the Germanic god Woden (Wodanaz or Odin) from Old Norse Óðinn) is a widely revered god. In Norse religion, from which stems most of our information about the god, Odin is associated with healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet, and is the husband of the goddess Frigg.

THURSDAY:
Thursday is derived from Old English Þūnresdæg and Middle English Thuresday (with loss of -n-, first in northern dialects, from influence of Old Norse Þorsdagr) meaning "Thor's Day

Norse mythology portrays Thor as a hammer-wielding god associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing, healing and fertility.

FRIDAY:
Friday comes from the Old English Frīġedæġ, meaning the "day of Frige", a result of an old convention associating the Old English goddess Frigg with the Roman goddess Venus, with whom the day is associated in many different cultures.
Frige, or Frig, was the "presumed" Old English name for a goddess found in Anglo-Saxon paganism, the religion that dominated Anglo-Saxon England from the 5th to the 7th centuries CE. There are no direct descriptions of this deity in surviving literary sources, but historians have drawn together indirect evidence from a variety of other sources, arguing that she was probably associated with sexuality and fertility by her worshippers.

SATURDAY:
Saturday is the day of the week following Friday and preceding Sunday. Saturday is the seventh and therefore last day of the week according to many commonly used calendars. The Romans named Saturday Sāturni diēs ("Saturn's Day"wink

Saturn is a god in ancient Roman religion and a character in myth. Saturn is a complex figure because of his multiple associations and long history. He was the first god of the Capitol, known since the most ancient times as Saturnius Mons, and was seen as a god of generation, dissolution, plenty, wealth, agriculture, periodic renewal and liberation. In later developments he came to be also a god of time.

Saturn is also one of the planets in the universe and the only one with a ring around it. Both the Planet and the last day of the week got their names from the Roman god.

Folks simply have no idea that on most days of the week, after all this time, we're still inadvertently acknowleding the ancient Norse pantheon.

All hail Odin, the All-Father grin
