AjanleKoko:

Hmm, if you're referring to technical stuff, this board might not be suitable for that. This is the Careers section.
We might want to set up a telecoms thread in the Technology section.

Yes sir, more technical learning stuff is wot i mean. And if you havent yet pened one(iam gona do that right away).
@Ajanlekok,Ingel,Sali,etc
Now another Q

You talked about peer-to-peer is wot these opertors do(no wonder they owe demselves huge amounts running into billions of Naira***scoffs*****)
1. How does this work?
In That who provides the interface?
Do they both bear the brunt?
In a multiple MSC scenario, how does this peer 2 peer interconnect thing work?
Wot of security issues?

Wen we talk interms of Long distance now(i mean other countries, )
how does switching work in such scenarios?
Is it the same way by using long distance carriers?like gateway?

i'll post this also on the new Telecoms thread in the Technology Section
yu can answer here and there tooo

@mbulela

Thanks that was some great advice . it give me a clearer picture as im not used to naija's HR system where you advertise a role (that is not senior role ) and u dont put the salary.
If i have anymore questions i hope you dont mind me coming back to you.

@Ajanlekoko

Thanks as i well, it might sound cocky but i know what im worth (not that its a lot ) but it terms of that role i stand a fantastic chance all things being equal.
However i am well aware that in my search for a job in naija MTN is a major potential employer and i dont want to mess things up. i'll explain- earlier on in the year i decided to 'test the waters' and applied for a BAT role did the interviews and was offered the job, when they asked when i can start i said i needed 3 months ( as i was in a diff contract at the time ). As u probably know now they didnt answer me as it was like im a time waster and thats how i lost that one.
Now i have gone to meet them and they arent answering as they dont think im serious so i have messed that rapport/ oppourtunity that is why im being careful with MTN so that the same thing doesnt happen and when i now move in 3 months they wont answer me.

I think ill follow @mbudela advice and start my job hunt now and hope it doesnt back fire !

Thanks guys!

Hmm. Actually what I was thinking was, when/if you interview with them, you might be able to get a better deal than whatever is in the public domain, due to your experience. Though if we go by mbulela's intel, that might just not be the case.
Though you are right; Nigeria is still rather rigid when it comes to employment, and don't publish hierarchy and asking salaries. It actually is a trust issue; most times HR do not trust line managers to manipulate the process. Just imagine I could just bring in my girlfriend and claim she was a top rate business analyst, and get her paid a top rate wage. But hey, the World Bank dude did the same thing at some point!

It also has something to do with jobs not properly valued in Nigeria. What everybody seems to have a sense of is seniority, rather than skill. From my readings, it appears that is basically what obtained in Japan in the past (another society that strongly depended on hierarchies), but they are moving away from that. As the economy grows and expands, hopefully things might just change, and we might just achieve a separation of hierarchy and job value.

Now to a pending query!

Is it the same way by using long distance carriers?like gateway?

Operators connect to each other at their various points of presence. Everybody will incur some level of costs, but there are ways to do it with convenience to either side. Operators try to terminate into each other at the points where there are minimal backhaul requirements, i.e you don't want to build a transmission link just to be able to carry traffic to another operator all the way from, say, VI, to Ojota.
Interconnect requirements also vary, depending on the size of either party. For the GSM chaps, they always provide one or more Gateway MSCs (GMSC) which serves as point of connectivity for local as well as international interconnect. I have long since left the technical domain, but back then everybody located their GMSC around Saka Tinubu because of NITEL. I'm sure that has since changed.

In GSM, there is always a multiple MSC environment. Just like in the old POTS environment (Plain Old Telephone System for the uninitiated) had multiple exchanges, also known as 'Central Office', you can regard the switches (MSCs) as the Central Office of GSM. Usually network topology and load balancing dictates that as you grow your coverage, you add more switches to the network, just like you had so many exchanges in the POTS domain. The only difference is, in GSM we don't do 'zoning' or 'zone billing' which is basically regarding your network as made up of various networks. In the old Nitel days, Lagos is a different network with it's own code, and calls to Ibadan were regarded as 'long distance', since they were, logically speaking, to another network. GSM of course does not work like that, since the concept is that you have universal service. Either you are in your home network or roaming on a visited network.

We still use the term 'long distance' unofficially to denote inter-MSC backhaul, and cross-country transmission. That is the kind of connectivity that you need the holders of LDC license to provide (the Gateways and Suburbans of this world), but virtually every operator has its own backbone these days, though they still use those carriers in cases where they need to extend last-mile reach to their backbone.

Security, well, there are inherent security protocols in GSM, and because these networks are connected to each other peer to peer, they do it in a 'closed' environment. Let me liken it to an IT VPN scenario: let's say I need to connect my server to your server. I can either put in place a logical link (an Internet VPN), with some level of security and reliability, or I can put a physical link in place between us. Using the second option guarantees that data we are transmitting between each other is not out in the open at any time, and the integrity is trusted between us.

I'm not a transport networks person, but hope my effort was reasonable enough.

To the starters:
Just found this link on YouTube for the highly motivated its a 1hr lecture (you're still motivated right ?) on SDH by one Prof. S.Ghosh,Department of Computer Science & Engineering, I.I.T.,Kharagpur.
I'm still watching it so I really can't provide any reviews yet. Scrolling down they're a few related videos ranging from Network Topology, Satellite Communication, Introduction to Routing, Fiber Optic Components, Modern Ethernet, IP version 4, Telecom Networks, Multiple Access and a whole lot more.
Hope it helps. have a great weekend.
P.S: This should be a 'ban-kai' to Isu ata wink !

Hello House. Hope the weekend was great.
I came up with an idea yesterday. Its something those of us that grew up in the hoods of Oshodi &

were prepared to smash JAMB once & for all had to do at some point in our lives.
I'm free 2 saturdays in a month & I'd like to offer to teach what I know about Wireless Networking - at no cost. I'll come along with my stock of ebooks that I've pasted about in the forum. We'll need someone to hook us up with any school in a location that'd be central to all of us. Preferably a government-owned primary or secondary institution, no matter how 'local', in his area where we could meet to learn and share ideas. I'll bear my transport fare. I don't have any equipment so we're all going to have to be very imaginative in our teaching approach. Please if any one's interested lets rally together and indicate interest. I'm going to try to be as simplistic as possible breaking down and explaining concepts with as little mathematics as possible so the starters with a non science background can follow. If anyone else is willing to jump in to teach also I'd appreciate.

To get the ball rolling, I've got the two supplementary chapters for the CWNA study guide covering 802.11n and PoE topics in the exam. If you'r taking it please kindly send me a blank email with "CWNA PWO-104 REQUEST" as the subject or if you want the full Sybex PWO-100 then the subject should be "CWNA STUDY GUIDE". Its 14 chapters in pdf format + 2 supplementaries = 16, so plenty attachments. Zero cost.

Below is break down of the topics I intend teaching as a precursor to the CWNA PWO-104 outline. find attached.

@ Ajanlekoko and salihu_ali,
I have a B.Eng in Electronics and Telecom (Nigeria) and almost rounding up my masters program in Communication engineering (Germany), am equally preparing to take CCNA in Nov, my question is this; based on your experiences what are my chances of getting a job in the telecoms industry, i worked in a cyber cafe for jst 1yr.

Also , am thinking of doing another masters in project management b4 finally coming back home. what do you think about this ?

Your advice would be well appreciated. thanks

I hope my response won't offend you, frankly speaking.
If you have done all this (planning for CCNA, masters in communications engineering, planning another masters in PM), you should have a clear idea of what you want to do after school, I think. From your Msc you should have a good idea of what area of telecoms you want to specialize in, and hopefully work in. So I'm a bit puzzled, what kind of advice are you looking for?

Human Anatomy Graduate Looking for a change in career.

Hello House, I have always been a ''regular customer'' in this thread without posting, I must confess I've gain a whole lot from this community since the time I got to know about NLand, Kudos to Seun for coming up with something like this.

I graduated from a reputable University recently (June 2009) and still waiting for my NYSC Program. I had a Bachelors Degree in Human Anatomy though I initially applied for Medicine & Surgery. I don't intend going back to the University to study Medicine as it would be a 'royal' waste of time.

I wanna venture into IT since I have passion for it a lot (not venturing into it because people around me are doing it). I have been looking into Networking. I took the NITT scholarship this year and had higher A plus. I was asked to pay a subsidized rate to take CCNA but I was afraid I might not be able to complete it before going for my NYSC Program. I intend going to India to take my CCNA trainings and exams during/ after my service year.

Please I need advice and constructive criticisms to know if I'm doing the right thing or not.

Thanks for your advice in anticipation.

NB
Ajanlekok, Ingel, Sali, ama27, salihu_ali, dumbi20028, faakay & etc. Please I need your comments more than never before.

To add to it: You can take both CCNA & CCNP trainings if you intend to go and study in india. If you have got enough funds you can enroll further for CCIE but you need basic knowledge of CCNA & CCNP.

Do you think it worth going to India for CCNA training only? NO. If that's the case you better stay in Nigeria and study CCNA in a reputable organisation.

Good Luck

I really appreciate your comment Sir, just wondering if I can venture into both Networking and Programming, particularly Visual Basic.NET. Or do I have to chose only one objective which would be Networking first for me?

That depend's on you. For me I wanted to go into programming but I diverted into networking. I noticed there are a lot of programmers out there. You have to be extra ordinary good to compete with others in the industry. If not, you might find yourself unemployed! Programming is not just that easy, it takes more than what you think.

I don't think you can combine networking and programming together, you just have to choose one for your career.

You might learn the other for personal use thou.

So it's either you choose Networking or Programming!

I developed an interest in telcos ever since I worked with an RA system implementation project team. The experience helped me a great deal in deciding the direction of my career.

I'm currently an Analyst for a small management consulting company in V/Island, however I am seeking a client/customer service job position in any Nigerian based telco.

This will afford me the opportunity to acquire relevant work experience and the financial wherewithal to retrain myself in my chosen career field.
