Please Nairalanders, I need a frequency selective Electromagnetic Radiation Measuring Instrument, can I get it in Nigeria.
-Very Urgent Please

Hello dejirule,
Its difficult to provide any helpful information because the device you are asking for will fall within range of everything from light meters and spectrum analysers to Geiger-Muller counters. (Electromagnetic Radiation is too wide spectra - AM Radio waves to Cosmic Rays) So please be a lil' more specific so we could help out.

Nice thread. I couldn't read all the postings but it shows we have a lot of pros in the house. I'm currently in telecoms but I have my hands full experimenting with VoIP. My specialty is Unix/Linux and Oracle Database / Applications. Some advice for aspiring telecom practitioners. Study and practice, practice, practice. Practice configuring possible scenarios on Cisco routers until you are confident. Same applies to aspiring Unix/Linux and Oracle DB Administrators. The barrier to hands-on learning has been reduced by the appearance of virtual machines. The only challenge in Nigeria is power availability. VMs are available for most of these things if you can't afford the physical devices in your lab.

God speed to us all.

^^
To be a telecoms engineer, you can start from the IT networking perspective. Get training and certification in any of the Cisco tracks. Nowadays, they cover voice, data, wireline, and wireless, including unified communications.

Try to get a job in those areas, get some experience, and then you can decide which of the areas of telecom you want to specialise in, be it fixed wireline, wireless, carrier services, ISP services.

There is also a software and applications track (which I started from). You need to get trained and certified in any of the relevant technologies (Sun Java, Linux, Oracle, etc, and focus on a career as a systems admin, software engineer, or database programmer. This is not as straightforward, but you can still get a good telecom job eventually.

Personally I think there is more demand in the telecoms engineering areas. Everybody is now somewhat into the software side.

Would have attached the help files but I'm having issues opening it in Vista. Trying to work around that at present, installing on Win2000 on a VM.

Any contract workers in telecom on this thread?
Was wondering, with all the OSS outsourcing going on by all the big telcos, how that market is doing?

Thank you for the links.
I tried using the application but it seems it is only the "Summary Module that is active.
The other modules are "greyed-out".

Wireless is not short cut network, far from it,
The trend now is wireless, anywhere you are. Wireline and wireless have their own niches. Cell phones are growing faster than fixed lines anywhere, and the key word is 'mobility'. I'm sure you've heard of the iPhone, the Blackberry, and the Google Nexus.
Fixed lines are there, but the applications are now different. FTTX and quad-play are the key words there, nobody anywhere deploys just 'fixed line' anymore.
The new paradigm is to be able to access rich media, content and applications, anywhere, and from any type of device.
Re: Telecommunications Professionals Zone by LAELIST: 9:35am On Feb 13, 2010
For the record, it is very essential for country to have a wired network for there telecommunication transport. There are some many end user product that can be delivered to customers via a wired network and wireless network will be limited to few. There is no way good thing will be cheap. So why can't we go for a better communication system for effective service, reliability and dependability.

*sighs*
Infrastructure my brother, Infrastructure.
Any good Telecom Layout still needs a solid wired infrastructure.
Why are we sick and tired of having the same road dug up three times last year and we're now hearing because Etisalat just got in their going to dig it up again in June ? because you better lay your own infrastructure yourself else you'll keep waiting to roll-out forever.
10Gbps NIC's are here but they'll be used for Distribution as against Access networks. Usually between switches. There's nothing wrong with Wireless (read: Mobility)- IF you have your coverage and capacity well planned out along with back-haul links that don't choke on the aggregate traffic (enter the capability of LTE). The higher the capacity of your wired infrastructure the better your wireless can carry.
FTTH (Fiber To The Home), DSL, and Cable networks exist as common place in Developed Nations because they value and maintain their infrastructure.
Let me put it like this. Its like giving Governor Fashola an ultimatum to build a state-wide sewage network and he awards El-Rufai the contract ! shocked
Thats the kind of task it is. Wireless = cheaper (to an extent & within a certain premise).
Truth is costs would have been cheaper for all our Operators if NITEL was truly functional and not burdened with so much inefficiency and corruption. NITEL's existing Infrastructure was really something. ( I say 'was' because technology has really changed much since the GSM telco's started penetrating the market.)

I'd sure stay in the loop with this thread, thanks!
Re: Telecommunications Professionals Zone by biina: 7:22pm On Feb 13, 2010
Wireless does not equate to mobility. There are fixed wireless technologies, as well as mobile wireless.
Unrestricted mobility requires wireless, but the reverse is not true.

can you please explain more?

AjanleKoko:

sure. this is because it is easier to carry your phones around and call/receive call (+ other applications) anywhere you are. but the wireline have their own advantages when broadband capacity is required. this is useful when it comes to surfing the internet, broadband/internet television as we have in advanced countries just to mention a few. each types of communication will settle to its own equilibrium as price /time continues. a wireline whose backbone is fibre optics is far more advantageous in capacity but the prices are still ridiculously high.
as with the network providers, a wireline linking their different mast and base station makes a lot of sense for a more efficient services since the bandwidth offered is greater than those by wireless. however, this will only make sense in an urban populated area so that the investors can recouple their investment in good time. for rural/less populated areas, wireless link makes better sense. in nigeria and many developing countries, many of these operators began all fully wireless so as to cover as many areas as possible with the limited funds they have. it is only of recent they are now laying the cables to handle the traffic which seems to be overwhelming the wireless.
