Nairalanders designating appointments since the day of John the Baptist. What if 'IFA' changes his mind and give the Olubadan to another person.
Ifa is not consulted in Ibadan case. Their are 2 major lines with heirachy to chose from as such the next Olubadan know himself. No controversy.

You are almost right! there will never be a controversy and no need to consult Oracle, the next king knows himself,They are on queue from 1 to 100 but i was told that the man who suppose to be the king is dead, the 3rd is dead as well so they have to go for 4th on the queue,Ibadan will never have a young king, the next king is going to be around 90yrs old

Mind you, it is not by selection but by rotation.

The next king after this new king probably may be older.

The Oba who promoted his surbodinates die peacefully at over 100 years of age in his sleep. What are you suspecting? The next Oba was not unveilled or selected or appointed, He is the next person in heirachy and known even before the death of the deceased monarchy.

There is Olubadan and there is Olubadan in councill. The former is largely ceremonious while the major decision lies with the Olubadan in council which comprises of technocrat. We are descendant of warriors, anyone is fit to be on the throne, but you must have done something for your clan and community at large.

Bi a se'nse ni ile 'badan , e wo ile bo mi....(How we do in Ibadan ..a taboo elsewhere).

That's our tradition... that's our culture.... every indigenous man of Ibadan land is a prince and a potential king..so far you are the head of our lineage and have done something tangible for your clan and community.. the next thing is to be enlisted on the King's line..and you wait for your turn..if death spared you

why cant a young man become olubadan

Circumstances can make it happen. If not......well......protocol must be observed.

The next in line may die before his liege....and his son installed before the death of the Oba. That will see a younger man on the throne.

They should look for a young king like the Ife kingdom not all these 83 and 93years old. Do they take delight in naming a new king every 10years, the man should nominate his son or grandson my take.

On the other hand, it's the best succession method and most well arranged structural ascension in modern history.
It avoids bickering and needless tussle associated with unstructured system practice in other places.

Like an iiliterate nairalander ba?! You guys need to be Minister under Buhari before anything else.

By the way, one has to admire the ascension system of the Ibadands; no hassle, no struggle, no bribing...so much class!

The chances a young man will ascend the throne is nearly impossible or very slim because of their selection process.

To the best of my knowledge, those that will become the Olubadan are on a queue and as the present Olubadan dies the next on the line steps ascend the throne while others behind him move up the ladder.

As for me, this selection process is the best because it mitigates the influence of politics. By this process, every potential Olubadan knows himself and can only bid his time until it will get to his turn. And again, it may never reach his turn if death comes before it gets to his turn.

I don't think it's done that way. If it was, it'll be the recently deceased former #2's son that'll be king now but rather they gave it to the next in line.

I think Olubadans will continue to be old people for a loooooong time

Ibadan people needs to change the way they choose thier Oba. Can't these old men choose any of thier children for the titles? They should look into it. Another 80 years old on the line!!! cry cry cry

Ibadan people need to change the process of choosing their king. They only ruled by very old people who cannot drive modern development for their people. Oba that just died got there at 93 and the incoming king is over 80 already. The current Oni of Ife is 40 years old and already broken that jinx of Oni and Adeyemi not coming together for years. No wonder when Jonathan came to Oyo State he did not visit Olubadan.
