A prince from the Sokoto Caliphate, his father, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki, was installed as the Sultan of Sokoto by Babangida despite intense opposition from locals only for him to be later deposed and banished to a village in Zing, Taraba by General Sani Abacha.
