The sedate chambers of the Nigerian House of Representatives erupted into excitement on Thursday afternoon, after two members of the House exchanged blows during the plenary session of the House.

The Reps, Bernard Udoh (PDP, Akwa Ibom) and Chukwuka Onyema (PDP, Anambra) had, midway into the session, exchanged hot words over an issue which could not be ascertained. They later moved to the lobby to continue with the argument because they were already causing distraction in the chamber.

At the lobby, the lawmakers exchanged blows before the Chief Whip, Emeka Ihedioha, came out from the chamber to intervene.

Journalists covering the proceedings of the House, who noticed the fight and attempted to separate the combatants, were barred by officials from the office of the Serjeant-At-Arms from doing so.

The security officials rough-handled the Channels and The Guardian reporters and chased away onlookers who also attempted to intervene.

Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs,

Eseme Eyiboh who later briefed newsmen on the matter, explained that the fight was a result of "a minor misunderstanding over a normal issue in the Chamber".

Press matters

Meanwhile, the House also took steps to assuage the demands of the Nigerian media in the face of the lawmakers' refusal to pass the Freedom of Information Bill.

At Thursday's sitting, "A Bill for an Act to provide for the Repeal of the Nigerian press Council Act, 1992 and Establish the Nigerian Press and Practice of Journalism Council, to promote High Professional Standards for the Nigerian press, and Deal with Complaints Emanating from members of the public about the conduct of journalism and Media Houses in their professional capacity, or Complaints Emanating from press about the conduct of persons, organisations or Institution of government towards the press and the matter connected therein,'' scaled the second reading.

It was well planned by the house! Members representing states that start with 'A' would fight today then members representing 'B' states fight next time. That is how the house has resolved to divert the attention of Nigerians from issues like the F.O.I bill.
Watch out for Bauchi vs Bornu!
Re: Two Members Of The Federal House Of Reps Exchange Blows by Fhemmmy: 12:46pm On Jun 26, 2009

It's natural to fight in the assembly because people are usually passionate when it comes to issues of their constituency at the national level.

Imagine a situation where a senator is moving a motion that soldiers are being sent to kill people in your constituency, wouldn't you want to free your mind and show yourself?

As they say, action speaks louder than words.

if they were fighting over that, that will be awesome, however, Nigerian leaders dont give a hoot about the people, i am so sure all the fight is nothing else but how to share the loot.

One of the guys mentioned was a room mate back at uni and a real gentle man. Even up till recently when we met up, would never have portrayed him as the type to trade blows.

See what politics, the way we play it, , can turn you into   grin

Don't be surprised. The fight might just be because of a foreign Ashewo they are trying to import. U know Abuja ladies of easy virtues are no not classy enough for them again plus their salaries are too much nowadays.
I don't believe the fight is for a good cause as it would have been handled in a more matured way. God help us!

Ofcourse can be of good cause, cos they have no clue what the people even want.
They only there to fight for their own selfishness.

I hope one of the reps smuggles a bomb into the others pocket while they are pretending to reconcile. Then it will be one down hundreds to go. Or luckily for Nigeria it will get about 10 at a time.
