We all want to prosper and have a wonderful life. Every one of us, irrespective of the circumstance of our birth have an innate desire to become successful. The poor wants to be rich, and the rich? They want to be even richer!

Sometimes it’s easier said than done. Life, with all of its challenges, and unexpected twists could suddenly throw us down to a spot we least expect, and then it may seem that success is merely an illusion and that we are meant to just sit wherever it is we find ourselves; after all, ‘God giveth, and God taketh’.

For those who believe in God, His love and His plans for us as humanity, it may seem even more confusing to be told that God wants to bless and prosper us, and yet, the more we wait and number our days, the less likely we seem to achieving our dreams.

Sometimes we work extra hard, put in extra hours, with so much commitment and grit and find little of our expectations. However there are also some, who honestly do pray and fast and expect a better end, they expect the blessings to just drop from heaven, without having anything to do, other than pray.

But what does the Bible have to say about success? And what does God say about hustle, labour, and work?  Some may be surprised to find out that there are many biblical injunctions about work, lack of work, and success. 

In Genesis 1:28, after God created man He says, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”  The word “subdue” certainly has a meaning of work or control...it is duty…it is hustle! This shows that even before the distortion of God’s plan for man through Sin, God gave Adam some things to do from the very beginning; some responsibility, duty, work! It suffices to say therefore, that Just like Adam, we all have things to do and work is one of them. 

We all work in some way; some go to an office, some work in the home, some with their hands and sweat, some with their pen and brains, some at day, others at night. Wait a minute, even Jesus himself had some work…he was a carpenter! So, for those who think sitting idly and waiting for stipends from friends and family or maybe even a President Buhari-led government is good enough, you might want to consider what 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 says… “…if anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living”.

Nonetheless, having work to do may not be the most important things for our realisation of the happiness we seek. Yes, having work to do may be the significant first step, but for me, two things are involved: God, and The Right Hustle!

Ecclesiastes 9:10 says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going”.

My friends, this is a call to diligence, perseverance, commitment, focus, passion, hard work and dedication. Proverbs 12:24 –“The hand of the diligent will rule while the slothful will be put to forced labor”. Compare this with Proverbs 14:23 which says, “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty”.

Wisdom therefore demands that if we are to succeed, if we are to prosper, or get to the echelons of our chosen careers, we must take care to be immersed in doing our work, going out there, not giving up and being responsible for ourselves. We ought to put our hands in the dirt to find our golds!

Furthermore, as long as we are doing a legally acceptable job, we should never be ashamed about the size or the pay. Sadly, we may have even more people out there who just want to stroll into abundance. Even the youths with all our strength, resort to terrible things to get wealth, either out of laziness to do proper work, character flaws or desperation to live in plenty. All over the world, there are people lying, cheating, stealing and killing to succeed!

Psalm 1:6- “The Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

Proverbs 12:11 - Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.

Ephesians 4:28 says “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need”.

There you go!

In light of this however, the place of God cannot be overemphasized. With all His works, power, wisdom, love, grace and riches, we definitely need Him! I

In Jeremiah 29:11 God says, “For I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” No wonder in Philippians 4:13, Paul understood the need to rely on God as his source for anything when he declared “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

These scriptures point to the fact that God wants us to prosper and that if we follow Him, trust in Him and are diligent with the work of our hands, we will succeed!

Psalm 37:4 says, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn.”

These all goes to show that when we work hard and put our trust in God; serving Him diligently as much as we work diligently; we will be blessed and become prosperous. He will reward us for our labour and our trust in Him.

In whatever walk of life you are in, in whatever job or task that you do, do it as on to the Lord. Do it faithfully and don’t give up. Sometimes we may work for or with someone who is not honourable or of high quality in character. We may even be tempted to be lazy as many of our co-workers are. Don’t give in to that mind set. Be the best worker you can be. Your hard work and diligence are not really for your employer but for the Lord. He sees your diligence and hard work and although maybe you don’t get adequately rewarded in your workplace just know that the Lord is pleased and honoured when we do good work.

I’ll leave you with Philippians 4:8 which says, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about (and do) such things.”

Keep up with your hustle! Better days are ahead!
