The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase has urged Nigerians to stop paying ransoms to kidnappers but rather provide adequate information to the police to enable them do their jobs.

He stated this yesterday at the start of a five-day counter-kidnap seminar organised by the British High Commission, with instructors drawn from United Kingdom Anti-kidnapping Agency and the Swiss Crisis Management Unit.

The IGP, who restated his commitment to continue driving reforms and strategic transformation of the Force in order to reposition for efficiency and effectiveness in its service delivery, warned against payment of ransom to kidnappers by victims’ families.

He explained that the seminar was being organised to boost the capabilities of the Nigeria Police, particularly now that the country is battling with the menace of kidnapping across the country, adding that the programme was in furtherance of the Nigeria Police Force efforts at addressing the current security challenges in the country.

The facilitators led by John Branney of the National Crime Agency – UK and Matthias Herter of Swiss Crisis Management Unit promised to deliver the training using United Nation’s kidnap manual which is used in Europe and other parts of the world.

They expressed optimism that the workshop will tremendously benefit officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.

It's easy to tell people not to pay ransom until your own family member is kidnapped and threatened with death. If the police is very effective, one might rely on them, until then people will pay whatever it takes to get back loved ones alive and well.

Then provide adequate security. That means no kidnapping, hence no ransom demands.

There was a time my former Company brought in foreign Security experts when the issue of kidnapping had gotten too much and they said the same thing STOP PAYING RANSOM.

The argument is that until we stop paying and word gets round that Nigerians no longer pay ransom, kidnap would continue to be a viable source of income for criminals.

They did say some people would pay with their lives, but that is the price we would have to pay to curb the menace.

It's a really difficult position, but I saw reason with it. It's like with armed robbery, house robbery reduced a lot since we went cashless. Robbers now know that people don't carry cash around like they use to anymore so most homes don't have hard cash in them.

Hmmmmmm. While his words are somehow sensible. He should also talk to his boys who will ask you to bring petrol money for patrol or comb the suspected kidnappers area, money to boost the morales of the boys etc. He go better.

Countries still pay ransom depending on how important the kidnapped victim is.. if you are worth 80million and kidnappers request 5million, u better pay it .. because this nigerian police no get sense they can even kill the kidnapped thinking the kidnapped victim was part of the kidnappers.. Any body taking Nigeria Police serious is a fool.. Just to effect an arrest, you will have to pay fuel money and mobilization money to the police. In the end you might even get arrested sef. Maybe what he means is that the money should be paid to the police so they can share it amongst themselves

The level of distrust and failure of government to live up to expectation lead to self help in Nigeria.

Lol, Funny man!

I reckon that these abandoned quarry and mine sites around the SW are probably hideouts and spots for robbers, kidnappers, ritualists, hemp smokers as well as other criminals.

The quarry around World Oil axis Sasa, along Oyo-Ojoo road, Ibadan should probably be raided. What I saw on Sunday was horrible.

Instead of your boys to keep an eye on the place, they are mounting road blocks along Ojoo-Moniya at Iyana 'Eleadisa' near Office bus stop, harassing innocent drivers.

Why haven't I filed a report to the Police? LoL... Those guys are jokers. I'd rather join the gangs. #Justsaying.
God Bless Nigeria!
