Orjiako In a couple of weeks, precisely on April 4, the Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc., an indigenous Nigerian oil and gas company, will make history as it becomes the first Nigerian registered company to be floated on the prestigious London Stock Exchange (LSE). In fact Seplat is making it double, for on the same day, the company will also be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) Lagos. The value of listed equities at the Lagos Exchange is set to hit the N500billion mark with inflow from Seplat’s Initial Public Offer (IPO). This is without doubt great news for the company’s stakeholders and potential investors. However, as the saying goes, “Giant oaks from little acorns grow.” Such is the story of the fast growing business empire of the orthopaedic surgeon-turned oil magnate, Dr. Ambrosie Bryant Chukwueloka (ABC) Orjiako. Readers of this newspaper would have noticed that ABC, as he is fondly called by his numerous friends and associates, i[b]s the Chairman, Board of Directors of Today’s Publishing Company Limited, publishers of The UNION Newspapers.[/b] But this story is not about The UNION newspaper. It is about a man who willingly put aside his years of education and training at the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, to move into the uncharted terrain of business, a complete departure you might say. Way back in the mid-90s Orjiako’s business was run from the booth of his now-rested Peugeot 505 Evolution car. Then gradually, the embryonic business enterprise known as Ordrec Investments Limited (OIL) began to take shape as the start-up company acquired an office accommodation somewhere in Victoria Island. At first Ordrec was a typical jack-of-all-trades outfit as the fledgling company was involved in Oil and Gas even though it lacked the expertise and the manpower to play in the big league. Nevertheless ABC would always talk of dreams, tall dreams, sometimes dreams that would make one shudder. Only that this “dreamer” was so sure that the sky was his limit. An incurable workaholic to the core, ABC once wished that the day consisted of 25 unbroken hours, because 24 hours were not just sufficient to get the job done, especially if you consider there is a night time period when one must stop work. And so it was that Orjiako began to try out his hands in virtually any conceivable business. Thus after quitting his job at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi, Lagos, he hung his stethoscope and doctor’s white overall, and forayed straight into business fulltime. In order not to lose complete touch with his profession, ABC had earlier set up private medical practice as he established the Rebs Specialist Hospital in Ikeja. But the desire to excel was still consuming him with a passion and so he handed the hospital business to a friend of his to run and concentrated full time to the pursuit of his Great Dream. [b]Within 10 years, around 2005 the Orjiako’s fledgling enterprise would include Abbeycourt Trading Company (ATCO), Abbeycourt Energy Limited, Berwick Nigeria Limited, construction company, Helko Marine Services a shipping company, Helko Nigeria Limited, a property company, all of them members of what became known as Ordrec Group Limited, a holding company. Then in a swift business decision that will herald a rosy turn about Orjiako formed the Shebah Exploration and Production Company Limited (SEPCOL) a medium sized oil company which was to acquire controlling interest in Express Petroleum Limited, indigenous operators of the Ukpokiti facility. And then came the big break in 2009 when Orjiako founded Seplat Petroleum Development Company Limited, which is a joint venture between Shebah Petroleum and Platform Petroleum Limited for the purpose of foraying further into the Nigerian oil and gas sector. A French independent oil company, Maurel & Prom subsequently acquired 45-percent equity interest in Seplat and gave it an international profile. This interest was later spun off to form Maurel & Prom Nigeria S.A. (later Maurel & Prom International). In July 2010, Seplat acquired a 45-percent participating interest in the venture and was appointed operator of a portfolio of three onshore oil mining leases (OMLs 4, 38 and 41) located in the Niger Delta region. Since then it has been success after success as Seplat began to expand its operations culminating in the present move to get floated on the same day in two stock exchanges across the Atlantic. Orjiako’s business interest has indeed grown over the years. He is currently non-executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Neimeth Pharmaceuticals International Plc.[/b] A quiet philanthropist, Orjiako has used and still uses, his wealth to touch lives. Although he is not a card-carrying member of any political party, Orjiako is not completely apolitical. In fact he has installed governors, national and state assembly members. In 1996 he set up the Daniel Orjiako Memorial Foundation (DOMF), a non-profit, private charity in memory of his late father Sir Daniel Orjiako. The Foundation based at Uli, his home-town, in Anambra State, provides scholarships for less privileged children sometimes up to the university level. Indigent students from other parts of the country are often considered for the Foundation’s scholarship. There is a common misconception that rich men are never religious enough. This is more so when we consider our Lord’s statement that “it will be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to go to heaven.” However, with Orjiako nothing can come between him and his worship of God. He makes it a daily obligation to attend Morning Mass and receive Holy Communion, no matter the pressure of work or location. In fact any time he arrives a new place (anywhere in the world) his first task before the next day would be to locate the nearest Catholic Church around. He does not give just the Biblical tithe, or 10 per cent of one’s income: he often gives in the region of 30 per cent and more. The Catholic Church of the Assumption, Falomo, Ikoyi and his home parish, St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish Uli, can bear witness to this. In deed the Catholic Church in Nigeria can testify to his generous donations and commitment. He has built convents and churches; supported pious Catholic organisations, just as he sponsors people going into the priesthood and makes it mandatory to present a brand new car to anyone that successfully goes through the Seminary and gets ordained a priest. In 2007 the late Catholic Pontiff, John Paul II honoured Orjiako with the Papal Knight of St. Gregory the Great (KSGG). A section of his office on Seplat’s Executive Floor in Ikoyi is decorated with plaques of the numerous laurels he has garnered from different societies and organisations. His alma mater, the University of Calabar honoured him with a Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa, and named him the “Most Distinguished Alumnus of the University” for the quantum of financial commitment he has made to the institution. In 2012 Orjiako became a proud recipient of Nigeria’s National honour of Officer of the Federal Republic (OFR). For decades the corner office has been the preserve of alpha-male CEOs with a high tolerance for risk. Today, the maxim still holds true. In Oilprice.com's list of the 12 richest oil and gas tycoons, not one is a woman. Recently though, Vicki Hollub, a 33-year veteran with Occidental Petroleum, made American corporate history by becoming the first female CEO of a major U.S. oil company. Hollub, 55, will assume assume control of Occidental's global oil and gas business, replacing current chief executive Stephen Chazen who will step down at the 2016 AGM. “The board selected Vicki based on her strong track record of successfully growing our domestic oil and gas business profitably and efficiently,” Occidental said in a statement announcing her promotion. According to Bloomberg, Hollub was paid $3.66 million in 2014, including a $516,697 salary plus stock options. The Alabama-trained mineral engineer oversaw wells in Texas and other U.S. states that reaped $12 billion. Much ink has been spilt over why more women haven't cracked the glass ceiling in America, including a new Pew Research report that explores perceptions about women's ability to lead companies. Among the findings: 50 percent of women and 35 percent of men agree that many businesses aren't ready to hire women for top executive positions. Another study drilled down into the backgrounds of 277 CEOs from the largest publicly-traded U.S. and international oil and gas companies. It found that the most likely reason for the dearth of female oil and gas chief executives is the lack of women studying engineering – the most common path to the industry's executive boardrooms. In 2013, only about 13 percent of engineers were female. The good news for women is that the number of CEOs in the industry is expected to increase as more enter the engineering field. While the 2014 study found that only 1 percent of oil and gas companies surveyed were led by women, a search one year later finds Hollub in good company, with a number of women occupying perhaps not the corner office, but one with a pretty sweet view nonetheless. For decades the corner office has been the preserve of alpha-male CEOs with a high tolerance for risk. Today, the maxim still holds true. In Oilprice.com's list of the 12 richest oil and gas tycoons, not one is a woman. Recently though, Vicki Hollub, a 33-year veteran with Occidental Petroleum, made American corporate history by becoming the first female CEO of a major U.S. oil company. Hollub, 55, will assume assume control of Occidental's global oil and gas business, replacing current chief executive Stephen Chazen who will step down at the 2016 AGM. “The board selected Vicki based on her strong track record of successfully growing our domestic oil and gas business profitably and efficiently,” Occidental said in a statement announcing her promotion. According to Bloomberg, Hollub was paid $3.66 million in 2014, including a $516,697 salary plus stock options. The Alabama-trained mineral engineer oversaw wells in Texas and other U.S. states that reaped $12 billion. Much ink has been spilt over why more women haven't cracked the glass ceiling in America, including a new Pew Research report that explores perceptions about women's ability to lead companies. Among the findings: 50 percent of women and 35 percent of men agree that many businesses aren't ready to hire women for top executive positions. Another study drilled down into the backgrounds of 277 CEOs from the largest publicly-traded U.S. and international oil and gas companies. It found that the most likely reason for the dearth of female oil and gas chief executives is the lack of women studying engineering – the most common path to the industry's executive boardrooms. In 2013, only about 13 percent of engineers were female. The good news for women is that the number of CEOs in the industry is expected to increase as more enter the engineering field. While the 2014 study found that only 1 percent of oil and gas companies surveyed were led by women, a search one year later finds Hollub in good company, with a number of women occupying perhaps not the corner office, but one with a pretty sweet view nonetheless. Following, in no particular order, are women who exert considerable power and influence in the oil and gas industry today: Mariana Gheorghe, CEO, Petrom.
