They are too self conscious. They always want to appear 100% all the time. So when they laugh, they feel because they are laughing and their mouths are wide open and all their whole dentition is being displayed, that they may not look as pretty as they are, so they cover their mouths to hide their supposed ugliness.

This is a really interesting question.

I thought this was mainly an oyinbo thing.

Not only do they cover their mouth, they quieten their laugh.

Anyway, so far, I can't think of a better explanation than the one you have given.

I had thought that women who had crooked teeth or teeth stained by smoking were the main culprits. But covering the mouth also goes with checking the laughter or toning it down. So it is probably a "ladylike" thing! Ha ha, so cute.

I remember one lady who used to laugh like a hippopotamus. It even took a couple of seconds for the wild laughter to appear from the cavenous jaws.

I tell, you, it was an immediate turn-off.

I actually do know lots of ladies who laugh in a way different from what the OP described. I mean hysterically. And that's how they laugh all the time. They don't place their hands against their mouths when they laugh, they just laugh the normal way.
