According to a survey by the IMF, with an annual growth rate of 5% during the course of 2015, Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) is set to total $1.105trn in 2015, representing a 5% growth from last year.

The report which was published on the website of the global body stated that despite global crude oil prices falling by about three quarters over the last year, Nigeria has defied the negative growth that afflicted several crude-producing countries.

Africa’s two other economies on the list Egypt and South Africa, who were ranked 24th and 30th respectively, enjoyed GDP growth rates of 5.2% and 2.4% respectively.

In terms of growth, Nigeria, was also the sixth highest achiever as only China, India, Egypt, Pakistan and the Philippines recorded higher GDP growth.

Over the last 15 years, Nigeria has enjoyed annual GDP growth rates of about 7% but with crude oil prices falling to about $40 a barrel from over $100 a barrel, it is no surprise that growth has slowed.

Despite this, the economy continues to diversify and the country remains on course to achieve its goal of becoming one of the world’s top 20 economies by 2020.

Below is the list as released by the IMF:

1. China: US$19.510 trillion (up 7.9% from 2014)
2. United States: $17.968 trillion (up 3.6%)
3. India: $8.027 trillion (up 8.3%)

5. Germany: $3.842 trillion (up 2.5%)
6. Russia: $3.474 trillion (down -2.9%)
7. Brazil: $3.208 trillion (down -2.1%)
8. Indonesia: $2.839 trillion (up 5.7%)
9. United Kingdom: $2.660 trillion (up 3.5%)

So nigeria economy leads other african countries? Then we deserves to be call the giant of africa but the problems is that we don't have constant light, tarred roads and social amenities to qualify nigeria as giant of all africans.

Anyway I believe it s well.

What most of us don't even know is that the ranking was based on GDP-PPP and we (Nigeria) moved downwards. We were at the 19th position in 2014, and here we are at the 22nd position in 2015, thanks to Buhari the dullard of Daura.

I can confidently say that by the time Buhari is done with Nigeria we might be begging to be in the 50th position

Can you read at all? If yes, go back to the first paragraph and read it 10X until you understand what they meant by 5% growth from last year.

That means the Vision 2020 of Yaradua for Nigeria to be among the 20 biggest economies by year 2020 is automatically coming to pass.

Lesson:
Have a vision that is bigger than you. Because even if you are not there, unseen forces will bring it to pass

Was NOI not under OBJ?

The economy grew faster under GEJ than under OBJ.

OBJ remains the only head-of-state to have changed the course of the economy in his two dispensations. First in 1975. After handing over to Shagari, the economy nose-dived and Buhari killed it completely. When he took power in 1999, he again changed the course after Shonekan had ruined the economy.

Yaradua made sure the global financial crisis of 2008 and the accompanying oil price fall did not affect the economy. Then GEJ came and transformed a $419b economy to a $574b economy (based on GDP) in 5 years. We rose from position #29 to #21 in just 5 years.

In just one year under Bubu, our economy has shrunk from $574b to $493b. We have fallen from position #21 to #23 in just 1 year.

PDP may have looted Nigeria, but make no mistake they know how to run a government. Under OBJ and Yaradua (10 years), Nigeria moved from position #48 to #29.

Mumu, what the article clearly points out is that the economy grew by 5% the previous year and not that it grew more than 5% percent compared to the previous year.

In 2014 our economy grew by 7.9%. Go and research on it.

You see what you want not what is real.

Rankings are based on relativity. India's economy is two times larger than Japan's economy, but we all know life in Japan is way better than in India.

But the reality is that, by the time India's economy fully matures, Japan would not come close in terms of industrialization. A baby crawls before walking.

Nigeria is 23 largest (by GDP)/ 22 largest (by PPP). This is supporting the world's 7th largest population and terrible infrastructure. By 2050, we would have the 3rd largest population, and if by then we are able to have 24/7/365 uninterrupted power supply, not to mention better road and rail network, stronger financial institutions, better healthcare... our economy will be in the top 10 in the world. Look at China and India. Nigeria will be joining them soon. We are not going to fly there, small concrete steps mate.

The typical Nigerian knows nothing about economy, everything is about stomach infrastructure. Bloody simpletons!

PDP vision and mission statement is on course: To make Nigeria the 20th highest Economy in the world by 2020 and in 2015, we became 22th.

PDP reduced poverty in Nigeria by 60% in 16 years. Increased the number of middle class by 500% (remember David Mark famous statement " GSM is not for the poor". Today Nigerians can now afford it with ease. PDP ensured naira flow while APC is hoarding the money and wants to loot them through fraudulent budget.

What is APC's vision and mission statement?

My bad; I'll perorate.

1. What was Nigeria's GDP (nominal and real) in 2013, 2014, 2015 ?

2. If the projection done in 2013 by PwC, SCB, IMF and e.t.c. projecting Nigeria to have an over 6 trillion nominal GDP (which mean we could be talking roughly 12 trillion GDP-PPP), 9th biggest in the world by 2050, is done this year with the current $ (not 2014$) and current oil prices, would it still be the same?

3. I'm sorry I called out the article as 'incoherent', and that was largely because:

a. it didn't differentiate/indicate if it is 'real', 'nominal', or 'PPP', GDP

b. those figures are just estimates/projections done sometime late 2015 -- even Naij (the source here) got wind of it and published the said article some over 2 months ago

c. if same estimates and projection are done now, it will be totally different

d. growth has slowed from averagely 7% growth rate between 2000-2014, to averagely 3-4% currently.

e. factor in that the CBN's exchange rate in 2015 (which is not a true reflection of situation on ground) was used, and not the parallel rate (which is of course more real to what the true cost of costs are, and that is some over 50% divergence from the CBN's at N310 to a dollar) . . . hope you get the drift -- "The reality on ground is different".

Finally, I understand your point. That phrase "different from what is on ground" has been abused by so many loquacious Nigerians, that I am averse to its use.

Thanks for the clarification.
