Ogun State To Enforce Physical And Urban Planning Laws

The Ogun State government says it will begin the enforcement of its Physical and Urban Planning laws to bring sanity to the current impunity in building by residents across the state.

The State Commissioner for Physical and Urban Development, Mr Adebola Adeife, handed down the threat after officials of the ministry sealed off about 10 illegal structures in Ota, Ewekoro and Ifo areas of the state.

He, however, asked residents and property owners to build right and ensure appropriate documents and approval were obtained before embarking on building their structures

In the State, illegal structures are everywhere, although they were offshoot of the failure of government agencies saddled with the responsibility of giving policy direction to building and development.

This no doubt has hampered planning for social infrastructure, but having realised this, the state government seems to be swinging into action

Buildings sealed by the ministry include business premises, warehouse, churches and residential buildings.

The Commissioner, however, assured genuine structure owners of government’s continuous assistance in getting approved building plans and other documents, saying that the era of impunity is gone

But while government is talking about due process in ensuring organised and controlled development, issue of corrupt officials who aid and abet this process should be addressed.
