The Nigerian Army on Friday released 275 Boko Haram suspects that were arrested and detained by the military for alleged involvement in terrorism and insurgency activities in Borno state.

The Theatre Commander of the counter-insurgency operation, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen. Hassan Umaru at a handing over ceremony to Gov. Kashim Shettima said the suspects have been cleared of any involvement in terrorists activities so the military have no reason of keeping them further in detention.

“In line with the principle of justice, equity and fairness, we released them to their families,” Maj. Gen. Hassan Umaru said, adding that, “I am confident that these detainees will be ambassadors to the Nigerian military”.

He explained that 142 of the total 275 detainees are males, 49 females, 22 under-aged (male) and 50 female children. Others released, according to him, include two Nigeriens and two Cameroonians. He said eight cases that were criminal in nature will be handed over to the Nigerian Police for further investigation and possible prosecution in court of law.

Governor Shettima while receiving the detainees on behalf of their families commended the military for being fair.

He promised that government will assist the released detainees to start a new life, adding that; “Children among you will be returned to school.”

He stated that for any meaningful development to strife, there must be peace. He also pledged that the released adults will be trained in skills and other trades, so that they are fully engaged, as peace continue to return gradually.

His words: “We are better off security wise now than six or seven years ago. We are the people on ground here in Borno State that know whether these lunatics (insurgents) are holding any part of the state as the media misquoted Sen. Baba Kaka Bashir Garbai on insurgents’ control of three councils of Abadam, Mobbar and Kala/Balge.

“The military has exhibited their professionalism, contrary to insinuations from some quarters in the country. The military deserves kudos!.” Governor said.

General officer commanding for 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen. Victor Ezugwu in his brief remarks said that the military will continue to respect fundamental rights of the people in the area of its operation.

He advised people still living in areas under Boko Haram control to “immediately relocate and move” closer to military posts and other locations; where their lives and property could be protected against any terrorists’ activities in the state.
