Cummins Power Generation (Nigeria) Ltd., a subsidiary of Cummins Cogeneration Ltd., has signed a 300 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Sapele Power Plc. and is preparing to build one of Africa’s largest gas-fired power plants. Deepak Khilnani, Chairman of Cummins Cogeneration Ltd., announced this landmark power deal only weeks after signing another 300 MW investment in neighbouring Beyin, Ghana.

“I am excited about our partnership with Sapele – as we bring our respective strengths and capabilities together, I believe we can deliver a clean and sustainable long-term energy solution for Nigeria,” said Deepak Khilnani.

Cummins Power Generation will run and operate the plant on Cummins Combined Heat and Power (CHP) lean burn gas generator sets. These emit up to five times less nitrogen oxides than comparable diesel generator sets and near-zero particulate matter. Further, they offer a 48% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional steam turbine engines, delivering a highly efficient and environmentally sustainable project.

Sapele Power Plc operates Nigeria’s second largest power plant by installed capacity of 1020 MW, capable of meeting the energy needs of around 750,000 homes at full capacity. Sapele Power will distribute the electricity generated from the plant directly to Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc. (NBET), supplying thousands of homes and businesses with clean power.

Chairman of Sapele Power Plc, Mr. Anthony Onoh, said the utility company which has a strong focus on sustainable generation is focused on capacity recovery from its existing asset, in addition to capacity expansion from a mix of projects which would double the plant installed capacity within the next 3 years.

“We know that Nigerians have high expectations from the privatized power sector. We are innovatively rising to that challenge as we work to improve performance at our generating station; as we integrate more renewable energy into the grid; and as we improve how we communicate all aspects of our business,” Mr. Onoh said. He further explained that talks with the U.S EXIM Bank, the African Development Bank, and the African EXIM Bank on funding for expansion projects were ongoing.

The project will be split into two phases; the first phase is expected to be completed and exporting power by July 2016 and the second phase is forecasted to be commissioned by December 2017. Once complete, the plant will supply approximately three billion kilo-watt-hours of electricity to the Nigerian grid per annum, approximately 10% of total production today.

Operating more than fourteen power plants in Nigeria, Cummins Power has a strong track record with both captive and independent plants.

This is great news if not not for anything but for the fact that it's a double cycle power plant.

All dependent on Gas; check my signature though

What is your concern about "double" cycle power plant?

My own concern is the number of generating sets that will be required to "pump" 300MW as it is not stated the capacity of each set.

Good development anyways!!!

Combining two or more thermodynamic cycles results in improved overall efficiency, reducing fuel costs.

...generator to pump 300mW of electric power(na water)
If you want to confuse a year1 electrical just mention double cycle.he go fall magsmags
Hahahaha!

Yup. You don't utilize 100% of the heat in the first cycle and can process the residual in another cycle. More power from your fuel.

Thanks. I did not read your sentence clearly .... " if not for anything but"

Gat it...You are right. Combined cycle of Brayton and Rankine cycle

Did you see the quotation mark?
If you look at the sentence what you see is a this "pump".

If you want to confuse an Engineering student that is poor in English..... (your own words!!!)

Naa!
Nothing wrong with your initial statements.the gas turbine is a "power gen set" and the "load" is "pumped" onto the main grid at high voltage!
It was the way you put it ,reminded me of school!
You need to hear civil engineering students explain the soil mechanics theory of "soaking garrison and water"
(You go burst laf)
