Due to increasing Lagos traffic, I spend an average of 4 hours everyday to and fro work instead of 1 hour which it used to be 3 years back. Now I’m deciding to upgrade to 4X4 so I can join those who follow the seaside track to save man hours and the two cars I have in mind are Pathfinder 1999 – 2002 and Montero 1998 – 2001. Montero is almost 500k cheaper than Pathfinder so I’m considering settling for it but I don’t know how reliable the car is. I will appreciate any input from anyone who can inform me about things to watch out for in these two cars.

Thanks.

My Mechanic advised that Nissan gives less problem dan Mitsu, , However, left 4 me, d most important issue is cars lifespan has to do with gud handling & servicing. Buy Montero, It will still last as long as anything on wheels & save yr money.
Best wishs

Thanks akanxpress for your input and advice. I believe Mitsu have great cars but I really wonder what went wrong with their market values.

Thanks once again.

Just out of curiousity, I hardly see a Mitsu on the road that doesn't smoke. I was told that the smoke is due to oil seal problems which is common in Mitsus. I also learnt from an auto specialist that Mitsubishis are notorious on transmission problems and that it takes a lot of efforts and money to change the spark plug because you will have to take off the entire engine manifold off to do this.

How true this.

Yeah, I am a redeemer, hope you wont miss next month's convention.

My personal experience with mitsubishi is good I used a Galant for 6 years, sold it to a lady 2 years ago and she still drives it.My brother used a 4 cyl manual for about 7 years, sold it to a man who exported for use in another country.

Joy,

Pls realize that each car that is produced or modified is an experiment. The car manufacturer waits to hear feedback from the users and know what next to do. Recall the recall of Mercedes Benz A class after launching some years ago. So, to extent, it is not bad to use individual merit on accessing each model separately.
As such, i dont think Nissan Terrano is better than Montero.
As earlier noted, just service a car when due, it will last.
Knowledge is the best guide. Nigerians don't have maintenance culture, so at times an average opinion may not be entirely correct. So feel free to buy any of yr choice, only ensure it a top grade, also you can mount another brand engine to a vehicle at any time - so that u have best body and engine combination most suitable to you.

I regret I will not be at the convention this year due to my job nature.
Love U and wish you well in yr decision

Cheers

@Joy2dwise,
A friend of ours has the 2002 Montero and the performance has been excellent for the past 2 years.Ultimately I think maintenance culture and state of the car when purchased would determine the performance of the car.I wish you God's leading on your choice and if you would like to order from the usa send me an email of your specification and budget to support@jesarmyventures.com
Shalom,
Jesarmy.

Montero delivers a combined milage of 18MPG while Pathfinder's MPG is 16. Review shows that Montero is not a problematic car.

If I were you, I'll go for Montero and save some bucks.

I noticed that most Mitsus in Naija are known to emit blue/black smoke. Does this have anything to do with rweliability of the brand?

Montero is as reliable as pathfinder or 4runner. What can kill a vehicle is lack of proper maintenance and bad fuel in Naija. I will suggest going for yr 2000 and up montero. I know a friend who has 2000 montero sports with 260k miles and it still performs well. Good maintenance is the key to any vehicle.

My man b/4 u make a choice of buying a ride first consider how popular is that ride within your location. This is true b/cos the popularity of a ride determines the ecomonic value and spare parts availability.I knw Pathfinder is popular and common in naija than montero, therefore pathfinder will be mntnce friendly.Dont buy a ride b/cos is cheap u may regret at last.Vehicles are property, if u buy good one u save money incase u want to sale, buyers may ask for it.
