Gov Ortom Donates Food Items And Toiletries To Displaced People Of Agatu LG (Photos)

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday requested assistance from the Federal Government as well as individuals and organizations to provide help for thousands of the displaced people of Agatu local government area of the state.Governor Ortom, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Benson Abounu, made the request when he visited three schools where those displaced by the recent herdsmen’s attacks are currently taking refuge.

The schools are Local Government Education Authority, LGEA, Central School, Ugbokpo, Methodist High School, Ojantele, and Methodist Primary School, Ataganyi, all in Apa local government area which shares boundaries with Agatu.

Over 3, 000 persons, made up of mainly women and children, have been registered in the camps with many more trooping in.
“This crisis is of unimaginable proportions and something serious has to be done immediately to alleviate the sufferings of the people,” he stated.

“These are people with new born babies, I’ve seen many of them who have twins that are just two-three months old, you can see that water is a problem, even where to ease themselves is a problem, so it’s a very serious crisis that we have on our hands.”

Governor Ortom appealed to the Federal Government, individuals and groups to assist in providing succor to those affected.

“You know these people here have to eat so we brought rice, garri, sugar, indomie noddles, maggi, other food items and soaps for washing just for immediate relief,” he stated.

According to him the state government took several proactive steps including hosting of several meetings between herders and farmers as well as holding joint security and peace meetings between Benue and Nasarawa States on the matter.

He expressed appreciation for President Buhari’s directive for full scale investigation into the crises and called for massive deployment of the army and other security agents to quell further escalation of the crisis and to restore normalcy.

Relief materials is not the solution to the problem. We are dealing with the 4th deadliest terrorist sect in the world. Buhari's order to investigate the violence is an insult to Nigerians. People where murdered, people are still being murdered in cold blood. But he labeled it a 'clash between farmers and herdsmen' that should be investigated. What is essential now is arrest and prosecution. Then we can look for a long term solution later. You can't be holding a peace meeting when an act of terrorism has been committed. Iys like holding a meeting to pacify murderers.
Every community down south should arm itself. If these savages attack, then retaliate with equal brutality. Commence a small ethnic genocide, till the tsetse flies are out of the community.

You know what? His hands are tied. With the sort of armed forces structure being run in Nigeria, state governors cannot give direct orders to the police or military force. The orders have to come from the Federal Govt. The governor can only make requests to the Presidency for military assistance.

This was one of the reasons some governors (especially Lagos state) were clamoring for state controlled police few years ago.

the scourge of Fulani herdsmen has gone beyond any rational being. That in a modern day Federation, a group of illegally armed herders will openly terrorize, kill and displace hundreds of thousands of people, and the government absolutely refused to take rigid steps to put a stop to it is incomprehensible. These killings have been going on for decades without letting up.
Yet, we are still here. We are still wallowing in a union that has nothing to show for it after more than 50 years! One Nigeria indeed.

I may be wrong sha, but wasn't a committee was setup with one of the northern governors (Nyako i think) heading it. They proposed that the herds men should practice modernize animal husbandry rather than the free range system that has been the cause of countless loss of lives over the years.

Yet that committee's report and recommendations were thrown under the carpet like so many others.

I really don't see how there can be a comparison between choosing between arable farmland and grassing reserves, in this age were some parts of the worlds are facing acute food shortage?

We really need to get our priorities in order in this country.

We deserve the government we get. What he and the legislative body in Benue should do is make it law that no COW should be seen in public. Any seen shall be shot at the spot. Do that and all these rubbish will stop.

The question is: Why were there displaced iin the first place? What measures have been put in place to avert future occurence? Have the evil doers brought to justice? If answers are not provided for these and other questions, the government will keep donating items like these indefinitely.
