FUEL SCARCITY: NLC Threatens To Order Workers To Down Tools If… by AroOkigbo(m): 5:47am On Mar 04, 2016
LAGOS—NIGERIA Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday expressed concerns over the recurring scarcity of petroleum products, especially the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, known as petrol across the country, threatening to ask workers to stay at home should the scarcity persists.
Congress in a statement insisted that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, must immediately intervene in the current hardship imposed by the scarcity of products as this might hinder the ability of workers to get to their work stations, calling on government to restore sanity to the supply chain to save the citizens from unnecessary suffering and hardship.
NLC in a statement by its factional President, Ayuba Wabba, said: “Nigerians are yet to be told what the cause of the current scarcity is; we however believe government will not allow any individual or corporate organisations sabotage efforts to restore sanity and good governance in all facets of our society as it is obvious the ongoing scarcity is calculated sabotage by petroleum marketers to sell the products at high prices for more profits.
“Petroleum products, especially petrol is key to our economy as it is what powers commuters, including workers, offices and businesses. The delays motorists contend with in long queues at petrol stations have led to loss of unimaginable man hours which have impacted negatively on our economy. We therefore call on government to strongly intervene by sending out appropriate agencies, especially the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, to enforce the sale of the products as some marketers have been reported to be hoarding the products.
According to the statement: “We restate our call for the speedy reactivation of local production of petroleum products as the country will continue to be held hostage by global economic manipulations if we remain tied to importation of petroleum products even when we have the resources to produce for local consumption and export.
"While it is regrettable that bad governance, misplaced priorities and corruption has almost killed the petroleum industry, we believe a serious government can revamp the industry within one year. There are examples of countries, especially neighbouring Republic of Niger, where one of the best refineries were built within a year. Nothing stops this government from doing same."
“In any case, despite their perilous states, we have it on authority that our four refineries are still one of the best in the world and can be turned around and even have its capacity upgraded; all that is required is to have effective Turn Around Maintenance conducted on them. The refineries are not beyond repairs. They have been abandoned to ensure Nigerians are ambushed by proponents of privatisation who believe every sector must be privatised. Those advocating for the sale of the refineries are waiting to buy them because they know the refineries are still one of the best.
“Indeed, we believe the recurrent scarcity of petroleum products is part of the roadmap designed by forces who wish to hoodwink us into accepting privatisation of the refineries. We will not accept a situation where major oil companies operating in Nigeria will have refineries in other countries where they ship our crude for refining and sell what they refined from our crude through importers of petroleum products to our country. Why have they not built their own refineries in Nigeria?”
NLC added: "It makes no common sense that this situation continues. While our resources are enriching other countries and creating jobs for citizens of other countries, our country and citizens are groaning under high currency exchange rates, deepening unemployment and infrastructural collapse. Government must demonstrate seriousness in our collective affairs through decisive interventions in revamping the petroleum industry and stamping out corruption.
"We can’t continue to be import dependent and expect our economy to grow. When ordinary citizens lament over the excruciating hardship unleashed on us by bad governance, what we expect is for our government to rescue us by rebuilding all infrastructures that have hindered our growth as a result of past neglect or deliberate damages done to them in the past.”

its worrisome under this government of CHAIN, everything is in comatose, we only saw fuel scarcity at the end of the tenure of the last government.

we are in trouble in this country, millions of citizens in the 21st century, voting in a 78 year old illiterate cattle rearer with zero modern ideas shows the level of decadence in our educational sector and our reasoning.

people would still come out and shout its only 9 months, 9 months no budget, no economic direction, daily fuel scarcity, strife and rancour everywhere, job losses, increase in the price of food, increase in Fulani terrorism and so many evils going on under this evil and sadist govt. angry

I tell u most solemnly, the gods are extremely angry with this country. I pray this would be the last time we would make this gullible mistake.angry

when the president allocated the oil ministry to himself, Nigerians were like "yeah that the best decision, Baba knows about the in's and out of the ministry and he is the best to handle that shii"

Unfortunately many can not repeat the above said phrase, why ? cause the President wey don turn Ajala the traveler no even get time to know the inner wrangling in the ministry.

The same President decided against separating the office of the NNPC GMD and
the office of the Minister of state for petroleum. Yes I know the president wants Nigerians that he is saving cost, buh these decisions are structurally wrong and Nigerians are suffering the ripple effects

I don't know why fuel that should be dispensed at 86 naira should be bought by Nigerians for 120 or sometimes more. So much for a change.

It's so shameful nigeria is going through fuel scarcity when some country that's not as blessed as we are,can still boast of good supplies. Are we that broke? The pooir are killing theirselves everyday while some selfish ones in the government are busy lavishing money, it's so painful that even a child in the womb is even feeling the hardship, how long are we going to keep looking at things the way it is, we all built this country, our fathers and forefathers fought for the rise of Nigeria. We say No to all this hardship, I imagine what every nigerians are going through with just a token as a salary and yet those silly ones in gov still always want to reduce workers earnings. We say No

Nigeria on the bricks. Its can never get better when the head is directionless. What did we do wrong to deserve this kind of punishment from God.Everything is going from bad to worst and no body is doing anything to save the situation.Baba, bubu even if you don't care about the suffering of the 5%.What about the 95%,who are silently languishing with suffering.

I totally agree with NLC on this one . I had to join the queue at the filling station this morning as early as quarter to 6. It is pure suffering and hardship. Contemplating running back out of this country now because things are getting worse by the day . Fighting corruption and leaving other vital areas that also need even more attention than the afformentioned is a misplaced priority.

iStandWithBuhari... No be today our refineries scatter.

This recurrent fuel problem would pass as well.

Its a shame that in the last 16 years, the PDP did not add one refinery or even resuscitate any of the existing ones to atleast 80% production capacity.

The president still has to rely on importers whilst having to survive with this low crude price.

I would advise the President to remove whatever subsidy exists in the petroleum product scheme and throw the market open to importers and monitor only the quality of the imported crude whilst they focus on either selling off all of our refineries or building new ones.

Hmmmmmmm, since the fall of naira, prices of virtually everything skyrocketed and even when the naira appreciated a bit, the prices remained stagnant like olumo rock. If fuel scarcity should join, i ain'tt gonna be funny o. The irony of it all is that salaries have refused to join in the rise. but why?
