Imo Workers To Get Only 70% Of January Salary by Ofunaofu: 6:06am On Mar 10, 2016
OWERRI—The 18-man joint committee comprising the state and labour, set up in Imo State, has unanimously agreed to pay only 70 per cent of workers salary across board, while making reservations for pension.

The state chairman of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Austin Chilakpu, disclosed this yesterday at a press conference in Owerri.

“The 70 per cent of the gross revenue for the month of January 2016 is N3,373,826,736.67. Given that the verified wage bill and pension for the month stood at N5.3 billion, the committee is saddled with a differential of about N1.9 billion”, Chilakpu said.

Continuing, the labour leader explained that “the committee have, in the application of the N3,373,826,736.67 to the settlement of salary and pension due to the workers and pensioners, decided to pay salary earners in the state 70 per cent of their salary across board”.

Comrade Chilakpu further explained that organized labour was not in any way spearheading a downward review of workers salary but only doing the needful with the resources available while hoping to pay up the balances when the revenue improves.

While saying that labour would be fully involved in the payment of salaries to forestall cases of ghost workers picking up salaries, Comrade Chilakpu, however, disclosed that it has set up a committee of financial experts to fast track the salary payment and improve on the financial state of the government as regards revenue generation.

Answering questions from newsmen, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Technical Issues, who heads the government’s side of the committee, Mr. Ikenna Emeh, pointed out that the payment of salary was not fixed but only a matter of what is available.

“The committee is an ad hoc arrangement and so does not have the right to borrow money. It only has the authority to apply 70 percent of its share to the payment of salaries and pensions”, Emeh said.

While stressing that every person that draws salary from the public treasury of the state, including politicians, civil servants, lawmakers, would be affected by this agreement.

He made bold the claim that the revenue of the state has increased by 15% over the last month as the IGR of the state rose from N215million to N400million in the last month.

If you read well you would have seen where Chilakpu said its when revenues improve which means its indefinite. Labour made a mistake taking over responsibility of salary payments instead of supporting Government in its commercialisation drive which would have made parastatals self sustaining.

I bet this arrangement will not last long and NLC might go ahead to downsize and prune out non functional workers. Right now Okorocha has no hand in salary payments as Labour takes the money directly and pay workers as they wish.

OKORO-IKA

meanwhile

I just wanna thank the Lord for seeing me through in my jamb exam. I didn't read at all. I flipped through the pages of Forcados High School and my SSS 1 govt note for a few hours (2hrs or so) and that was all I ever did in preparation for the exam.

I have never failed jamb(though I don't pray to be a veteran-lol) and its just the doing of the Lord.

Experience/ familiarity with the questions + GRACE helped me cos I didn't read at all. I kept postponing till the day of the exam which was yesterday. I scored 222 without READING & this is the first time I'll sit for an exam without reading. I was just frustrated that's why I didn't study and I pray this will be the last jamb cos I'm getting in by His Grace in Jesus name.

Success to the rest of the jambites as well.

Praise the Lord!

Okorocha is a devil! He won my heart and that of many Nigerians through his fake philanthropic gestures. Now he has been given the opportunity to serve his people, he is now showing his true colour. Evil man.

that is the agreement reached during the last strike over the sacking of 3000 workers..labour now collects 70% of allocation of Imo to pay salaries and pension leaving 30% to state government to run the state..i have to agree with Abagworo here as I see crisis ahead within labour itself as this scenario is just not sustainable

He has an advert (half page) in one of the newspapers today, praising him on his speech at Chatham house London (cost 500,000) and he can't pay salaries of workers.

Too much waste in our governance system. Why? Because we masses never hold them accountable and they are worshipped by all even the so called pastors and imams.

Nigeria has a long way to go as interest supersede national development an growth.
