Lagos: Woman gives N3m lottery cash to beggar

A woman who won the national sports lottery has given all her prize money to a street beggar an hour after being given the cheque, a website said.




Rosemary Obiakor, 46, of Lagos, won more than three million naira in the National Sports Lottery, said a report culled from the website.

When asked what she planned to do with the money after she was presented with her cheque in a ceremony on local TV, Mrs Obiakor said she'd give it to a "lucky beggar".

"I have heard a lot of stories about how people win the lottery, and they get broke in the short run and come across a lot of misfortune. I am scared, and so I'll give it to a lucky beggar on the street," she told TV reporters.

She collected her cheque, cashed the money and gave the money to a female beggar who was sitting by the street side with her two-year old baby.

When Mrs Obiakor and a team of lottery executives handed the beggar a bag full of banknotes, she screamed with delight, and hugged them all.

She thanked her benefactor profusely and promised to start a food retail business immediately.

Before she went away with her money, the new 'millionaire' gave handfuls of money to other beggars on the street.

I've seen this thread before where tpiah cursed the woman and suggested she rather take the money down to Niger Delta where people are dying of hunger instead of Lagos where everybody lives big like Babangida. That comment alone should tell you the kind of woman she is.

It is not about worshipping money.

It is about the logic leading to giving it away, 1. Shows she is some superstitious slowpoke.

And 2, about the choice of channel for dispensing it. Giving it to someone that is likely to lose everything within the next 18 months because of likely lack of money management and business acumen. What will a beggar know about how to use N3m?

She would have been better off giving it to a registered charity or setting up one.

y did she play the lottery in the first place, if u dont play u dont win. the story does not make sense, u dont beleive in something yet u play the lootery.

Isn’t Charity about the intentions of the giver here? The giver in this case gave the money in order to pass the curse along to the beggar, and you believe that is charitable? I don’t have to believe in African superstitions to know that is just wrong and has nothing to do with actual charity.

When I saw the headline yesterday I was excited like Afaukwu but when I read the content, I had mixed feeling. I reasoned like KOBO
