But government encouraged all of them to come. So why give preference to Innoson?
cos Innoson does not repatriate funds out of Nigeria. The money remains in our economy.
Re: Toyota Unveils First Nigerian Toyota Vehicle Assembled In Lagos(photo) by Patented: 9:18pm On Mar 21, 2016
Preference cos it's a home grown company and responsibly we shld protect it and guarantee it a market. Otherwise big players may push it out. Innoson's funds stay in naija. Am not saying buy Innoson only am saying guarantee Innoson a market share to help keep it afloat

Are you not creating a monopoly if you give preference to Innoson or any company.

Toyota Nigeria has achieved a breakthrough in Nigeria by unveiling of its first locally-assembled vehicle in Lagos, a Hiace bus.

Toyota Nigeria last year hinted of its plan to establish a vehicle assembly plant in the country to join Nissan, Ford, Kia, Peugeot and a host of other auto firms already assembling vehicles locally.

The Managing Director, Toyota Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ade-Ojo, said the new Hiace was assembled in the company’s plant in Lagos, built with 30,000-unit production capacity every year.

The Hiace, he said, was assembled as a test case, adding that the organization would soon begin its mass production.

This is coming about two and a half years after the announcement of the Automotive Industry Development Plan by the Federal Government, which raised the import duty on cars from 22 per cent to 70 per cent in order to discourage vehicle importation.

Ehen, good. Government at all levels should only by locally produced vehicles from now on....with preference given to Innoson

Better to use cars that have long year of performance and reliability test than to make oneself a guinea pig of made in Nigeria vehicle.

If this truly FCT then am selling it off to the highest bidder.... No time for nonsense joooo

This brings unemployment as previously, majority of Nigerians import cars but with the FG discouraging imports with the high increase from 22 to 70 percent, people wont be so keen on importing and these companies know that with time they will loose the nigerian market so they bring their assembly plants here and in order to run these plants they have to employ people... pay taxes and etc meaning this would profit nigerians and 'send dollar back to the masses'

Innonson vs Toyota vs PAN vs Nissan.

Honda, Kia and Hyundai should start warming up.

I don't think Samsung will. They haven't been doing well in their home market and may see expansion into overseas market as a burden.

My problem with news like this is,....where exactly in Lagos is this fabled Toyota Assembly Plant located? Seriously something is wrong with our pyche as a nation,...we simply don't ask questions. Where precisely in Lagos is Nissan, Ford and Kia assembling their vehicles
It's only in Nigeria car manufactures assembly automobiles in secret.....
Although am not resident in Kaduna, a reasonable number of us here know the exact location on PAN in Kaduna, I bet someone here on Nairaland grew up in Kaduna to the noise of those heavy duty machines of PAN. Is there anyone on Nairaland 2day that can say d same d with respect to the confirmed noise/din of heavey duty machines in d so-called Toyota, Nissan and Ford auto assembly plants?

This a welcome development. The next stage is to make sure that a reasonable percentage of the parts are made in Nigeria, because that is where most of the jobs in the Auto Industry reside
Re: Toyota Unveils First Nigerian Toyota Vehicle Assembled In Lagos(photo) by sultaan(m): 8:36pm On Mar 22, 2016
Some do not understand the politics of this auto assembly fad, it is meant to keep the incentive that comes with the waivers given to all those who indicated they will build plants.

All a builder has to do is import a couple of knocked down components assemble it together launch the few samples and they automatically qualify for reduced tariffs on all their other imports which is why you see pics of the first which will be the only for a long time.

After this achievement by Toyota, now they will go to central bank to try and get dollars for their imports at 200:1, pay 5-10% duty on their stripped down models yet they will complain of the competition from those paying 70% duty

Good point. But patronage can't be based on such sentiments only. I hope Innoson gets its act together and produces vehicles that meet specs. I'd even suggest they meet with those who buy large numbers of vehicles like the police and discuss their needs.

More importantly, though, Innoson can't survive on government patronage only - that was the mistake Peugeot made. They need the critical mass of Nigerians. The way to get that market is to up their game and compete well with the Toyotas and the Nissans. For example, I'd like to see them export their cars and let's see what foreign regulatory agencies say about them in terms of emissions, airbags, breaking systems, you know the works. You see how they've been rejecting our beans and cashew in Europe? Low standards. I hope Innoson meets standards - I want to buy one of their cars myself. I hope you get my drift.

I feel you totally, u made valid points. My comments are based on the belief that Nigeria must protect its own companies. Govt Patronage alone won't make Innoson start but that guaranteed market @ the beginning will help ensure the company stays afloat and has funds for research, development and improvements. Lets call it encouragement grin

I agree. But I hope he doesn't rely on government patronage for funding. He needs to go to the stock market - he has established a good business and should be able to raise money from shares easily. There is really no way you can run a capital intensive business like IVM without going to the stock market unless you're Globacom backed by IBB's stolen billions or Arik backed by Peter Odili's stolen billions or Lekki Gardens backed by Akpabio's stolen billions. It's either that or you remain small forever, unable to compete with the Toyotas and the Nissans.
Re: Toyota Unveils First Nigerian Toyota Vehicle Assembled In Lagos(photo) by Patented: 6:03am On Mar 23, 2016
Makes sense ooooo!! But we don't know whether he has some Billions backing him up too grin. Eventually if he wants to truly expand he'll hve to go public with his shares. He's still building sha. Has even started fabricating spares for the Air force.....He can go far

Bravo

The only person in Nigeria who understands manufacturing because he has been around a functioning plant.

Every other person here seems to have their head up someone's rear everything being said sound like fart .

Where is the plant

Where is a pic of label saying assembled in Nigeria.

Who supplied the tires and interior trims.
If the windshield is not made by oluwa glass chairs made by sarafoam tires made by Michelin then everything is imported and subjected to the forex rate.

Think people Nigerians have not come on here to say they work in any of these plants
