'Iheanacho leaving City within 10 days' - Pep

Francis Okupa, KweséESPN

ESPN.com | 11:31 PM FJT

As pre-season training ramps up for Manchester City on their International Champions Cup tour of the United States, manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that Nigerian youngster Kelechi Iheanacho could be on his way out.

Iheanacho has been the subject of transfer rumours all summer and reports have added Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City into the mix to sign the 20-year-old away from the Etihad Stadium.

Despite scoring 21 goals in 64 appearances across all competitions over two seasons in Manchester, he has been unable to earn consistent minutes with the Manchester City first eleven.

Last season, with Sergio Aguero absent for four games leading up to the Boxing Day fixtures and Gabriel Jesus not available for selection until January, Guardiola gave Iheanacho a place in the starting lineup for a couple of matches.

The coach then left him on the substitutes bench for the remainder of the season, instead going with Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling up front.

As it is for any player going into a World Cup year, playing time is vital for Iheanacho, both in terms of development and solidifying a place with his national team.

Guardiola stated at a press conference in Houston: "Kelechi is a young player. It was easy, an honour to work with him, because it's not easy for him, I didn't give him a lot of choices.

"But he's close to making a transfer. Maybe in the next week, in the next 10 days, it's going to finish."

Guardiola also added that City will be inserting a buy-back clause in any transfer involving Iheanacho: "We'll have an option to have the opportunity in a few years to bring him back.

"But he's a young player and we believe he deserves to play, he needs to play at that age and that's why the club will decide what's best for him."

Leicester have reportedly tabled a £25 million bid for the striker and if the move goes through, Iheanacho will be reunited with Nigeria teammates Wilfred Ndidi and Ahmed Musa.

The goalkeeper department needs help all round. A new trainer can also press for trying other keepers that have more potential since Agu is blind lol
Icon79:
I agree that it doesn't hurt to hire one immediately; however, my point is much more simpler than that. The argument I was trying to make is that they are diagnosing the wrong problem. The main problem we have right now is lack of a competent goal keeper. Hence, that should be the priority, because you can hire the best goalkeeper trainer in the world he still can't perform wonders if all he has to work with are a bunch of incompetent folks.

Like Jose Mourinho would say "you need an egg to make omelets".

The problem is players of the U23 category will have issues getting release from their club for ANOTHER AFCON. If you are speaking of the home based ones, it's fair that they must compete with the older players in the domestic league for a shot at SE.

actually I mean only u23 locally based players will play CHAN

Most reports from camping of the Super Eagles puts Alampasu as the best performing keeper. Unless another does better than him in camp, Alampasu remains the best option for the team.

Can someone get Shorunmu into that Keeper coaching role?

Africa Cup of Nations expansion and move to summer ratified by CAF

KweséESPN

ESPN.com | 7:29 AM FJT

The Confederation of African Football have confirmed that the executive committee has passed a resolution to expand the Africa Cup of Nations from 16 teams to 24 and shift the biennial tournament to summer.

CAF opted to switch the continental showpiece from January-February to June-July, although the tournament will still take place every two years, rather than moving to a four-year schedule.

A statement published on the confederation's website, following the two-day CAF Symposium in Skhirat, near Rabat, confirmed the tournament expansion and dismissed any suggestion that the competition would take place outside of Africa, as had been proposed during the summit.

The summer switch eradicates a long-standing problem between CAF and European clubs unhappy with losing many of their African players for a month of the season every other year.

Similarly, while CAF's inter-club competitions -- the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup -- will not be expanded again, the confederation have decided to shift them to an August-May calendar, rather than inside a single calendar year.

This change further brings African football in line with the European game, although various questions remain unanswered from the symposium, with many of the continent's nations unable to boast the infrastructure to host 16-team Nations Cups, let alone an expanded 24-team tournament.

Elsewhere, CAF confirmed that the working group had decided to increase indemnities to referees, organise zonal Nations Cup qualifiers for the tournament at age-grade levels, and improve international partnerships and relations between CAF, its member associations, national governments and the African Union.

Enugu Rangers' ex-coach Imama Amapakabo arrested

Colin Udoh, KweséESPN

ESPN.com | 5:45 AM FJT

The Enugu state government have had former Enugu Rangers coach Imama Amapakabo arrested and detained overnight on Wednesday, then taken under guard to the state capital, after allegedly failing to return the club's possessions following his dismissal.

Amapakabo was arrested in Abuja after a tripartite meeting with the club and officials of the LMC's dispute resolution committee where the parties had gone to state their respective cases.

Rangers General Manager Christian Chukwu told KweséESPN that the Enugu State government -- which owns Rangers -- were responsible for the action, and not the club.

"Rangers have nothing to do with this. This is between Imama and the state government," Chukwu said. "He left with the keys to the flat he was given and the official car.

"We wrote to him at least five times to return the property, but he ignored all our letters.

"The government needed their car and apartment back in order to give it to the new coach, and so they took action to recover their property."

Imama admitted that he was holding on to the car but not the keys to the apartment

"I held onto the car because I was waiting for the final settlement and I made that clear to the LMC during our arbitration meeting and they are aware," he told KweséESPN, "but the keys to the apartment are with the estate security."

Amapakabo was fired by the club in April after leading them to their first title in 32 years last season, but is claiming wrongful dismissal and seeking compensation to the tune of N38 million.

That fee includes full payment for the remainder of the contract term, N2 million as two months' salary arrears, N600 000 in outstanding allowances and bonuses, $940 international travelling allowance and N16 million as damages for breach of contract.

In their defence, Rangers claimed that Amapakabo was fired for falling foul of the 'failure to perform' clause of his contract with the club.

However the clause defines 'failure to perform' on the part of the coach as 'inability of the coach to impart football knowledge on the players or several defeats of the team due to his own fault'.

By contrast, the same clause defines 'failure to perform' on the part of the club as 'failure of management to provide adequate motivation including payment of allowances and salaries when due'.

Amapakabo argued that the defeats were not his own fault but that of the club in failing to pay players' wages which led to training boycotts and at least one instance of players refusing to travel for a continental game.

Rangers' lawyers, in their defence, then proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot by admitting that while the club did owe players, 'it is not the only club that owe her players in Nigeria.'

The LMC ruled in favour of Amapakabo, finding that there was insufficient proof that he failed to perform, but more than enough -- and on the evidence of the Rangers lawyers' admission -- that the club failed to perform.

"The Club wrongfully terminated the Contract of Service it entered into with the coach," was the LMC's decision.

Rangers were directed to pay the coach his salary arrears, N600 000 in outstanding bonuses and allowances and $940 in international travelling allowances, but the LMC directed both parties to work out an amicable compensation settlement for the wrongful termination of contract.

Rather than settle, however, Rangers had Amapakabo arrested.

The coach is now considering legal action in addition to the compensation claims he is entitled to.

"I have been humiliated and spent a night in police cell just for asking for what is my right. If the LMC do not do something about this, I will have to go to court."

LMC Chairman Shehu Dikko was outraged by the incident.

"This is unacceptable and capable of bringing the league to disrepute," Dikko, who is in Morocco for the CAF Symposium, told KweseESPN, "but I cannot make any comment as yet until I have been fully briefed by the office."

If Nigeria were to bid and awarded the hosting rights for a future AFCON, my preferred host cities would be:
Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Uyo, Jos, Warri/Asaba.

The round of 16 would be held in all stadia

Quarter final games in Uyo, Lagos, Jos, Abuja

Semis in Lagos and Abuja

Third-place game in Uyo, the final in Lagos.

Hosting in Nigeria requires Federal character. 6 venues: 1 from each Geopolitical Zone.

Bleep federal character. Its better to hosts the tournament in the areas with the most populous urban centers/football fans.
After all, both the 2002 and 2006 AWCON tournaments were exclusively held in Delta, so there is a precedent for ignoring federal character in that regard.

The AWCON you mentioned was hosted by one state. And there was also 'state character' on the distribution of venues: Warri, Oghara, Ogwashi-Uku and Oleh. All 3 senatorial districts captured.

CAF should seek for strategic partnership with Arab Gulf Federation. The partnership should be so packaged to have 4 teams from that Federation participate in the Afcon. This partnership will benefit both parties ,with the Gulf countries getting the benefit to play against top African oppositions which will develop their football, while CAF benefit from more TV money and sponsorship from those Arabian money bags and companies.

We have seen the South American federation partner with CONCACAF and teams like Mexico and Honduras played in the Copa America.

Interregional partnership is the way forward.

This partnership could even be extended to club competition. Imagine a Caf champions league featuring teams from Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The viewer-ship and sponsorship generated will see the present chewing gum money on the table as prize money for the winners of the competition reviewed upwords to meet a resemblance of what is obtainable in competitions of such magnitude in other climes. Its a shame winners of the PSL get nearly 10 folds of what winners of the CAf champions league take home.

An expanded Afcon with featuring teams like Djibouti,Tanzania, Gambia and Rwanda will just be another boring thing on tv. Interregional partnership is the way to go. Even if it means th Afcon being played outside the continent, so be it.

No its still biennial as there would still be a 2021

The 2019 format will see the 12 group winners qualify automatically and the 11 best runners up will join the party (excluding the Cameroon group where only one qualifies).

The only challenge to this timing is that we'd have an AFCON and Confederation's Cup holding simultaneously. Meaning the champion of AFCON 2019 won't play AFCON 2021 as it will clash with Qatar 2021 confedcup and subsequent ones

Presently, Caf have very low TV viewership, low prize money, poor branding, all these are not likely to change.

Having countries like Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE playing in the AFCON will strengthen the competition commercially and other otherwise. We need to raise the standard and profile of the competition. It's not like your Rwandas and Djiboutis can't qualify. Africa will still present 20 or 21 teams.

We have to be creative. AN AFCON with those stranded African countries who can't afford to sponsor their teams through the qualifiers (remember Niger? Adebayor single handedly sponsored Togo through the qualifiers etc) is not commercially viable and makes no sense.
I doubt anyone can prove me wrong or convince me otherwise.

Ur last sentence though -- staging AFCON outside Africa. Does that even make sense?

The demograph of our North African brothers and say Bahrain are basically the same. Humans carved out barriers for themselves.
Australia is not an Asian country but they chose to be part of the Asian Federation.
Having you asked yourself why Isreal is playing in the Uefa champions league when they are located in the middle East. They even hosted a European U21 championship some years ago.

Morocco are presently a member of Ecowas.

Frontiers are being expanded my good friend.

U can't tell grown people what to wear. In Uyo people put on more EPL than Nigerian jerseys. U can't start telling people to take off clothes they paid for.
