Ribadu was OBJ’s political weapon - Waziri
Kolawole Daniel, Abuja - 28.07.2009

THE Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri, on Monday, disclosed that evidence available showed that the commission, under its former chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, was used as political weapon against perceived enemies of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

She spoke in Abuja while receiving the National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM) from the United States of America.

Ribadu is currently living in the United States and was wanted in Nigeria for trial over alleged failure to declare assets while in office.

Waziri said the commission, under her leadership, would break the link between tax evasion, money laundering and terrorist financing, adding that the commission had put up preventive mechanism for economic crimes.

According to her, EFCC under Mallam Ribadu was characterised by weak administrative structures, absence of career path for officers, haphazard administration and investigation, non-compliance with the rule of law as well as human rights abuses and political interference.

“It is necessary to admit that in its formative years, the criticisms that had trailed the commission have been that that it is political tool of the presidency and is arbitrary and selective in its investigations,” she said.

Waziri should shut the hell up.

Assuming the newspaper report is correct did Ribadu prosecute any innocent Nigerian? This is the core issue because all the corrupt officials and looters of public treasury must either by OBJ's friends, enemies (real or perceived) or inconsequential for anyone to take notice.

Any other accusation or allegation against Ribadu?

If yes, let's have it.

If no, then Madam Chairman get to work and do the job you were given because as things stand today Ridabu's record remains 100% better than what EFCC is doing today and that is what Nigerians are interested in.

Mrs waziri said that the criticism she found was that EFCC under RIBADU was that it was used for political witchunting.

Even, if the criticism are true, EFCC under RIBADU has tooth rather than the toothless EFCC under Mrs. WAZIRI, under RIBADU, you go staight to PRISON, NO FINE OR PLEA BARGAINING OPTIONS. IGBINEDION STOLE ABOUT SOME BILLIONS AND WAS FINE SOME MILLIONS, COME ON PEOPLE SHINE YOUR EYES.

Neither was SAm Egwu

These are the 2 names that readily comes to mnd and it is a know fact that they were and are still chums of OBJ.

I won't even mention Uzor Kalu. EEven though he stole without any care in the wold like the others he was just too hot for OBJ to handle.

Kalu was charged to court.

This type of thinking is laughable - because some people who stole were not prosecuted, then EFCC was political.  undecided

Do all thieves get prosecuted at the same time? You prosecute according to evidence and confidence in conviction, not based on emotions. This ridiculous thinking that because certain people were not prosecuted means the EFCC was a political tool is a joke.

It was used for political purposes, but in the overwhelming majority of cases the culprits were guilty, prosecuted and served as deterrents. In a matter of less than a year, EFCC under Yar'adua ruined that.

Prosecution was underway before Yar'adua came in and destroyed what the EFCC was doing. . . naturally the case died away when there was no more impetus behind it thanks to Yar'adua's actions.

In nearly two years, no one high profile has been brought to book - even the Rivers guy the current 'fake' EFCC arrested, there was no proof against him and the case was thrown out! Shoddy irresponsible work.

probably it would have sounded better if people say mrs waziri has not right to criticize another failed chairman. simply because it makes no sense for a failed person to criticize another failed individual.
so far, as the head of efcc it is clear that waziri hasn't shown us anything impressive, but the same thing goes for ribadu. no justice is much better than selective justice.
i still find it very difficult to figure out why people continue to make noise about ribadu. during his time as the chairman of efcc, ribadu arrested, ribadu listed names of corrupt officials and ribadu also made a lot of noise world wide, but he did not complete a single case during his time as the chairman. so, what the hell are we here making stupid noise about this thief for?
ribadu is still the main reason why the value of efcc as a nigerian federal government organization has gone down to nothing.
he ran this organization like a personal business. it makes me sick when people give this man an unnecessary attention and credit for destroying the integrity of efcc.
he's wanted and currently on the run.

balogun, the chief security officer of that place u call country stole funds and was jailed for 6 months but an internet fraudstar was jailed for 360 years in nigeria by ribadu. what a millenium joke?
if we want to be realistic, there was no war on corruption by ribadu because we saw corruption on the high at the end of the day.
african china made us to know that poor man wey steal maggi is brought to crime fighters while the mean thieves move arround with police security.
if ribadu and obj were real, what happened to all federal projects? i mean our roads, power supply, security and other federal related issues and problems and who was arrested or questioned for all those? why will ribdau run away and why is el ruffai outside?
i continue asking this question, was corruption under obj and ribadu on the low or high? we all know the answer.
why did andy uba remain a saint under them even with his indictment in the usa over a money laundary case? what is the difference between andy uba's case and that of alams?

It is not just a joke!!! it is very troubling that that line of argument got any traction and became the household political narative for so long. Even now with the benefit of hindsight the likes of Chidicris still continue to make this tired argument.

All of these say a lot about who we are and who we want to be as a country.

If the 3rd term agenda had become full blown at the time Tafa Balogun was prosecuted, he will also claim to have been against 3rd term.

This is really unfortunate.
Now 2 years into a new Administration Farida Waziri will rather debate Ribadu's records than wade into the legitimate questions being asked of IG Mike Okiro. I guess she prefers to be a political pundit than be the EFCC boss.

Your useless Waziri has come in and is simply letting everyone off the hook - Ibori, Kalu and all the others and is actually fostering corruption daily. With ignorant yes women like you around her, it's no surprise the EFCC has gone to the dogs now.

actually, its worse than that . the bitch and okiro were have both been bitching about how hard it is to chase criminals

on the radio -

i hear okiro canvassing for unrestricted access to phone records without court orders etal

waziri on a diff ocassion was cnvassing for bypassing signing of arrest warrants by judges or some such also

listening to news on the radio while driving can be dangerous to health -when such morons are allowed to air their views freely angry

2) A hypocrite who at least prosecutes the guilty!

Did Ribadu prosecute any INNOCENT people? NO - EVERY SINGLE PERSON he got convicted was guilty. You may not like them, OBJ might not have liked them, but they were damn guilty. As long as they are guilty and someone, ANYONE guilty is being prosecuted, it's a start.

Waziri comes and RELEASES all the people under prosecution and her only 'case' a botched prosecution against the Rivers SSG was so shoddy it got thrown out!

The resident peeps on the Nairaland are becoming damn right ridiculous or absolutely naïve. Any place in the world, including USA, people who ascended to higher political positions had existed richer than they came.

If the people yarning for prosecutions against any office holder wished to leave higher political position poorer than when they assumed office, I appreciate you go quietly.

Almost all the governors who did not challenge Obasanjo on any political issue were not made notorious through the witch-hunting style of EFCC under Ribadu.

I am afraid that the issue of Nuhu Ribadu has been proven beyond reasonable doubt that the dude, Ribadu, is human fraud. Anyway, he is a typical Nigerian.

can you please advice us on how you figure out who the friends and enemies of OBJ are?

please don't give me answers based on perception. A checkable record or pointers will be welcomed.

I think in a civilised society the number of opposition party victims relative to ruling party victims will be a good place to start.
