Some people speak very well but can't write well, some write but can't speak. Don't be surprise if those people who wrote that could speak more better than some people who write perfectly well.
What I'm trying to say is their level of intelligence should not only be measured based on what they wrote up there.

guy forget that thing. I was priviledged to attend a competition hosted by Rheomichs (for those who live in Ilorin and its environs, you would know that the school is arguably the most expensive private school in the state). They crashed out in the first round, placing 10th out of the 12 schools that participated. All three schools that took top flight were public schools. Other private schools from around Kwara state came up with similar 'low density' results. Same went for the last international olympiad. Three people out of the seven that qualified for the national olympiad in my state were from my alma mater (a public school), and one of them proceeded to represent Nigeria in the international competition. I can therefore, with this epistle of mine, categorically say that the best schools in Nigeria are public schools. Mind you, they speak good English too.
I'd be inclined to disagree with you sir. Judging from the way I hear public secondary school students talk to me. The thing about a public school is there are lots of students there. So a minute number tend make a very huge difference in books. As opposed to a private school where they are less.

I attended a private school(a bit expensive tho ) and in the whole school, no one speaks ' tattered english'

Even in the public university I attend I hear new types of English everyday from students. And i am very sure in private schools like CU none of them speak horrifying English. They'd simply blend in with their fellow students and improve on their English if it was bad before.

Don't blame them, blame the system.

The system has a faulty education curriculum that can't prepare you for the real world.

Don't blame the system, blame them.

Most of us are damn too lazy. We wait for the system to spoon feed us. We are too unwilling to educate ourselves, forgetting that The best kind of education is self-education.

I disagree with you sir...quota system is the major challenge that bedevils Nigeria as it were. Nepotism is the order of the day, we sacrifice merit on the alter of nepotism, tribalism and religion.

Accepted, quota system is doing us more harm than good. But that's not to say there are no exceptionally bright students from the "educationally disadvantaged" States.

In my undergraduate days, the three best students in my class were from the core North (the ones we call 'educationally disadvantaged'). And many other guys from the west, south and east graduated with 3rd class and pass even though they defied all their competitors to get the admission.

So, my argument still stands. It's either the system failed them by not empowering them for the real world (because I believe a good system can transform a dullard into a genius), or they (the students) failed themselves by over relying on a faulty system.

So, whether you're from the 95 or 5%, if you educate yourself well enough, the sky will be your springboard.

Thank you for this response as that has always been my thinking whenever I see the lame excuses people make on issues like this.
Why go to school in the first place especially as far as Tertiary education yet you cannot construct simple sentences. And most contributors here are supporting or excusing such.
The truth is this... if they cannot express themselves correctly in English the language of their over 15 years of Education then they cannot do same in any native language or Engineering or Medical Language as most people here claim.

Nigerians should simply stop supporting mediocrity else no need complaining about the state of the Nation cause it is all part of the problem we have today.

At most keep quiet or accept your shortcoming and go improve yourself, after all being educated has nothing to do with going to a formal school.

sonature1:

Just keep fooling yourselves. Look at this analysis:

Nursery school is 3 years

Primary school is at least 5 years

Secondary school is at least 5 years

High institution is at least 1 year

It is only a hopeless dunce that won't learn English after being taught for (3 + 5 + 5 + 1) 14 years in English as well as studying it as a course/subject. Sadly, your likes still turn around to, proudly, make the comment you just made whereas people like Maria Sharapova and Dimitar Berbatov learnt in a split second.

You have no excuse not to know English as a graduate from an anglophone country, period.

Re: See The Reason Most Nigeria Graduates Are Unemployable (pics) by realvenc: 8:29pm On Apr 16, 2016
You can tell me it's a typo error and leave it at that.
Anyone who is a graduate of a Tertiary Institution anywhere in the world but cannot express themselves in simple correct sentences in the Language of schooling is simply not something to be proud of or to be excused.
English does not need to be the mother tongue, if not why waste time and space going to school.
And finally take up the space of well qualified people in professional employment positions later on through favoritism. And keep messing up the Nation.

Why not go and be a successful illiterate as most people on this thread has highlighted a lot of persons who never went to school but are successful.

Just saying...

Djbaka:
It's irrational to use this to judge their intelligence or ability to learn and perform. This could very much be a typo.

Tell the graduate to analyze/explain the simplest concept or solve a problem involving logic, then his/her thought process will give you an idea of how 'employable' he is.

English is not our mother tongue. It is true.

Sir, I think you missed my point(s).
1. What I read up there, could be a typo. It was actually written, not spoken.
2. Ability to speak good English is not a test of intelligence or competence. No.

I'm not justifying graduates unable to command good english.

I quite agree with u except the last two lines sir. Being educated and formal school are related in many ways cos most of the educations that have helped humanity today were acquired through formal schools.

I can't see where I have condemned anyone or claimed to be a Master of English Language.
All I said was that it is nothing to be proud of or excused or justified to be a graduate of a tertiary institution and at the same time can't express yourself correctly in simple correct sentences in the Language one is schooled. Does not matter if it is me or anyone.
Wrong is simply wrong.

And I still maintain that there are people who never went as far as any tertiary education but who are okay so the excuse of falling standard of education does not really stand for me.

Leave them alone, even GNS lecturers makes mistake. I remembered vividly there was a period our GNS lecturer did not come to lectuer upto 3 times throughout the semester. We have to read and research on our own. Secondly, English is a borrowed language so stop criticising them.

I quite agree with u that English is a borrowed language but as realvenc rightly pointed out above, graduates of tertiary institutions should be role models rather than making themselves laughing stocks. The social media are agents of socialisation and school children have access to them.
