Etoile du Sahel vs Enyimba:

CAF Champions League return match

Date: wed 20th April 2016

Time: 6pm

Venue: Olympic Stadium in Sousse, Tunisia

Wednesday’s CAF Champions League clash between Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel and Enyimba has already been sold out.

The Tunisian Interior Ministry approved for 20,000 tickets to be sold for the match at the Olympic Stadium in Sousse and already officials said the tickets have been snapped up.

The clash between Etoile du Sahel and Enyimba in the second round return leg match this evening is scheduled for 6pm Nigerian time. Moroccan officials will be in charge of Wednesday’s match.

Enyimba won the first leg in Port Harcourt 3-0 courtesy of a hat-trick by Mfon Udoh.
The seven-time Nigeria champions who have been training under floodlights at the Agege Stadium in Lagos ahead of this fixture scheduled to fly out to Tunisia via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
They plan to train under floodlights in Sousse Tuesday night.
The overall winners of this tie will march on to the group stage of the Champions League, while the losers drop down to the second-tier Confederation Cup.

Meanwhile, Mfon Udoh has signed a new deal that keeps him at Enyimba till February 2019.
“Mfon (Udoh) has signed a new deal with Enyimba till 2019 after his previous deal ended in February,” a top source told only AfricanFootball.com yesterday.
“All the documentations have been filed with the league.”
Enyimba is now expected to cash in big time should the striker move overseas before the expiration of this new contract.

The 24-year-old Udoh, who smashed a hat-trick against Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel in a crunch CAF Champions League second round clash last week, is the all-time top scorer in the Nigeria league with 23 goals.
The former Akwa United star achieved this milestone two seasons ago.
He was subsequently sought after by several top African clubs including club Africain and Esperance (Tunisia) and Egypt’s Zamalek.
Last season, he came off the boil due to fitness problems, but he has been firing again in the current campaign highlighted by his treble against Etoile last Sunday

As Africa awaits the titanic between the two football titans, Goal looks at the People’s Elephants' past encounters with north African oppositions
Enyimba's first encounter against any north African team in the Caf Champions League was against Ismaily in a group game on August 22, 2003. However, it was not a good tale for Kadiri Ikhana’s men as they were torn apart 6-1 at the Ismailia Stadium with Mohamed Mohsen and Abdulrahman Traore leading the rout with a second half brace while Henedak Saber and Emad Nahas completed the rout. Obinna Nwaneri got the consolation for the Nigerians in the dying minutes of the one-sided encounter.
In the return leg played at the Aba Township Stadium on October 19, 2003. Enyimba avenged their defeat with a 4-2 win. Ndidi Anumunu’s double and strikes from Muri Ogunbiyi and Emeka Nwanna sealed the victory for the Aba lords, with El Gamal and Mohamed Mohsen's goals mere consolation.

After a fertile outing in the round robin stage, Enyimba faced USM Algeria in the semifinal of the tourney. The first leg played at the Stade Omar Hammadi ended in a 1-1 draw with Michael Ochei cancelling Ouichaoui Moncef’s 38th minute penalty. The second leg ended 2-1 in favour of Enyimba on November 8, 2003 courtesy of an own goal from Ghoul Tarek and Ekene Ezenwa’s breath-taken strike.

Will Enyimba's recent form give them the confidence to overcome Etoile?

Enyimba faced Ismaily in the final of the competition – their fifth encounter versus a north African oufit. Emeka Nwanna and Ndidi Anumunu’s goals gave the People’s Elephants a favourable 2-0 first leg advantage, while the second leg ended 1-0 against Ikhana’s men courtesy Abdrabou Hosni’s 27th minute penalty. And for the first time in the history of the competition, a Nigerian side won the prestigious championship.
In the 2004 edition, on August 7 to be precise, Enyimba began their title defence against Etoile du Sahel but lost 1-0 in Sousse thanks to Zoubeir Beya’s 89th minute strike. The return leg ended 1-1 with Obinna Nwaneri’s penalty cancelling out Emeka Opara’s second minute effort for the Tunisians.

There came Esperance in the semi-final of the competition. The first leg was a tortuous one in Aba as the People’s Elephants struggled to a 1-1 draw . The Tunisians took a shock lead in the 77th courtesy Joahar Mnari, but Eric Fasindo clawed Enyimba back with a well taken 90th minute strike. The second leg ended 1-1 in Tunis. David Tyavkase erased Ali Zitouni’s first half goal. And on penalties, Okey Emordi’s men progressed to the final where another north African side was waiting.
Enyimba successfully defended their Caf Champions League crown after beating Etoile du Sahel on penalties after aggregate scores stood at 3-3. The first leg ended 2-1 in favour of Etoile with Imed Mhadhebi and Kandia Traore’s goals erasing Emeka Nwanna’s 15th minute curtain raiser. In the second leg, Vincent Enyeama’s penalty and Mouri Ogunbiyi’s effort gave Emordi’s men a 2-1 win, but went to win the thrilling final with kicks from the penalty spot – thanks to Dele Aiyenugba’s heroics.
Al Ahly became the fifth north African side to face Enyimba in the history of the competition. In the 2005 edition, The Egyptian side silenced Enyimba before their home fans courtesy Emad Moteab’s goal. The second leg ended 2-1 against Okey Emordi’s men with Hosni Osama’s double eclipsing Sakibu Atanda’s opener.

It was Raja Casablanca’s turn to test their might against the dreadful Elephants and they were unsuccessful in their bid. Abdellatif Jrindou’s 78th minute strike gave the Moroccan outfit a 1-0 first leg win, while Joetex Frimpong’s double ensured the Elephants cruised 2-0 past Raja in the second leg.
After missing the tournament for three consecutive years, Enyimba returned to the championship in 2008 and faced Al Ahly in the group stage. The first leg ended 0-0 in Aba, while Enyimba crumbled in the second leg crumbled in the second leg to Amado Flavio’s powerful header.

In the second round of the 2011 edition, Enyimba beat Al Ittihad 1-0. Victor Barnabas’ goal was all the Nigerians needed to progress to the next round as there was no return leg owing to civil unrest in Libya at that time.
This is the 26th time Enyimba will be facing a north African team in this competition
Raja Casablanca showed up in the group stage but got their wings clipped again. Chidozie Johnson and Uche Kalu fired Enyimba 2-0 past the Moroccans as the return leg ended 0-0 at the Stade Mohamed V, Casablanca on August 26, 2011.
Enyimba’s juggernaut was halted in the semi –final by Wydad Casablanca. The first leg ended 1-0 in favour of Wydad who got their goal in the 89th minute through Pascal Angan, while the return leg ended 0-0 in Nigeria.
Egypt’s Smouha ended Enyimba’s dream of a Champions League triumph in 2015 in the first round. Raphael Boumsong had given the Elephants a slim 1-0 victory in the first leg. But in the second leg, the tables turned at the Alexandria Stadium with late goals from Hany El-Agazy and Hermann Kouao taming the two-time African kings.

Going by the above, Enyimba have faced more north African teams on their road to two African titles but have failed to exert their supremacy over them with eight wins, tens defeats and seven draws in 25 games played. And in the process, scored 23 goals and conceded 26 times.

enyimba set to reach group stage:

Uche John has stressed that Enyimba cannot afford to lose focus ahead of their Caf Champions League encounter against Etoile du Sahel on Wednesday.

Paul Aigbogun’s men defeated the Red Devils 3-0 in the first leg with Mfon Udoh getting a treble, and they need a decent result in Sousse to qualify for the group stage of the competition.

The defender has insisted that the Faouzi Benzarti’s side should not be underestimated, despite their unfavorable deficit.....

Infact the coach will have selection problem cos etol daniel is determined to fight for shirt just as mfon Udoh fought to claim his shirt back. Shikiru kamal is another fantastic holding midfielder who can combine well with aliyu and dayo ojo who is also in form for this match. My only problem is the RB (Namo) i will prefer idris aloma cos of his quick response when off the ball.

CAF Cup: Etoile abandon Enyimba in Tunisia

On April 19, 2016 In Sports

OFFICIALS of Etoile Sportive du Sahel of Tunisia have abandoned Enyimba FC of Aba as the Nigerian team arrived Tunisia for the CAF Champions League second leg against them in Sousse, Tunisia on Wednesday.

Enyimba won the first leg in Port Harcourt, Nigeria by 3 – 0, but the Peoples Elephants, who arrived Tunisia on Monday ready for the return leg are going through torrid times in Tunisia.

Enyimba Chairman, Felix Anyansi Agwu, who disclosed this exclusively, said Etoile officials picked them up at the airport several hours after they had arrived the country.

He said the bus provided for them deliberately detoured from the normal route to their hotel just to wear out the Enyimba players and ensure they did not train later as they had planned.

He said, shortly after the bus dropped them off at their hotel, the vehicle was withdrawn; which forced the Nigerian team to hire taxis before they could go out to train.

Anyansi told HotSports.tv that the Tunisian team have also changed the time for the match, which was earlier billed for 6pm local time to 7pm without the knowledge of CAF.

“We are used to all their antics.   I am only surprised that they still employ this unwholesome attitude just to win a match.

“We anticipated all that and had arranged for our accommodation, training ground and even opted to stay in Monastir rather than in Sousse before departing Nigeria.

“When they came to Nigeria, they opted to stay in Port Harcourt rather than in Aba, yet we provided them with all the necessary facilities they needed to be comfortable.

“We are not deterred by their efforts to frustrate us.   Our players are in high spirit and ready for this match,” Anyansi said.

He said they will make their observation in the sudden change in time known to CAF, but will nonetheless go ahead to honour the game irrespective of the shift.

Enyimba Stoned During Training In Sousse

20 Apr 2016
CAF Champions League,

By Babatunde Koiki In Sousse, Tunisia:

Enyimba International Football club had their first feel of the turf of the Olympic Stadium in Sousse, venue of their Wednesday's CAF Champions League second round, second leg tie against Etoile du Sahel, but the team arrived at the stadium at 7:00pm to a tense and particularly hostile atmosphere, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

A number of home fans lined the route into the pitch, hurling insults at the players and officials in French, Arabic and English. When the players started warming up, a dozen fans invaded the pitch in an attempt to disrupt the training and the filming of events before they were escorted off the pitch by the police.

Not done, rocks were hurled at the players during their warm up with Enyimba players fleeing for safety. Calm was later restored when more security men arrived and some of the erring fans were escorted from the stadium.

"It's because they are running scared,"  Enyimba chairman Felix Anyansi Agwu told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"They are condemned to score four unreplied goals in order to qualify. The fear of impending failure is making their fans act in such a manner. But by the grace of God, we will be victorious in spite of their antics."
