Fulani Herdsmen Raid Taraba Communities, Kill 13 by kodded(m): 1:52am On Apr 23, 2016
Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have killed at least 13 people in separate attacks on communities in Bali and Donga local government areas of Taraba State. Tiv Central leader in Taraba, Chief Zaki David Gbaa, in a phone interview with Saturday Mirror disclosed that two people were killed in Bornon Kurku around Kungana area while others were killed in Anchogo and Tortondo villages of Bali Local Government Area. Saturday Mirror also gathered that armed Fulani men on Thursday attacked and killed seven people in Igo village in Donga Local Government Area. An eyewitness told our correspondent that two days earlier, there was a robbery incident in the area where both Tiv and Fulani people were robbed, but the Fulani, acting on suspicion that Tiv youths were behind the robbery that left two dead, attack and killed seven people in the village. These latest attacks are coming barely one week after suspected Fulani herdsmen over ran several communities in Gashaka and Bali local government areas, killing 44 people. Chief Gbaa said the attackers burnt eight houses and wounded over nine people who are currently receiving treatment at Santa Maria and General hospitals in Bali town. He named some of those killed in Bornon Kurku, Aungwan Gobiri and Tortondo villages to include; Myimanga Agbayongo, Memga Temaga, Tyokpega Kaior, Bem Nomsule and Iorkegh Gbatoon among others. The traditional leader lamented that the attacks have forced the displaced people who are managing to return to their homes to flee, and appealed to the state government to mobilise the task force earlier set up by government to supervise the return of IDPs back to work to prevent the killing of innocent people. “Government should intervene by ensuring that the Task Force on the security of the IDPs returnees intensifies patrol of affected areas to ensure the safety of the returnees, especially now that raining season is around the corner. “The land belonging to the IDPs have been sold out by the local chiefs to strange Fulani herdsmen, and attempt by them to return is being resisted by the attackers, who are now claiming ownership of the farmlands,” he said. He wondered that despite efforts by the Governor, Darius Ishaku and the Chief of Bakundi, Alhaji Muhammadu Gidado Misa, to ensure security of IDPs in Bali, some people were bent on frustrating the peace efforts, adding that the situation is worst in areas like Yelwa Kararuwa, Sansani, Yake and Ganso. Confirming the report, Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Joseph Kwaji, said two Tiv farmers were attacked and killed while sleeping in their round hut by suspected Fulani herdsmen in a village in Bali Local Government Area. On the attack in Donga, the PPRO said two Fulani men were robbed and killed around Igo village and the Fulani mobilised and attack the village, and burnt some houses, but no life was lost. He added that the command has deployed its men to the area to calm the situation, saying investigations were ongoing to bring the perpetrators of the attacks to book.

This menace seemed to have increased over night when Buhari took over. It is also surprising how our security personnel will keep waiting until things go from bad to worse before they act. They should be rest assured that if this gets worse (which I pray it doesn't), it will be more difficult to curb than Boko haram cos this madness isn't just limited to the North, it is being spread towards Southern states too.

Buhari has given the Fulani executive orders to settle all age long scores. This is once in a lifetime opportunity for the fulani militias as according to their patron el Rufia who said the fulani has a very long memory.

Every tribe raided and overran by the militias should go and enquire from their ancestors what wrong they did the fulani herdsmen. This what buhari body language says.

Who's purpose is the press serving?? What is their aim really?? Why do we always see headlines of atrocities of suspected Fulani herdsmen while we never read about the incidents that precipitate those attacks. Even when they are stated, it is always done in such a manner it escapes the reader's attention- they are embedded in one single line in a distant paragraph after the reader's mind must have been twisted in preceding paragraphs that it was an unprovoked attack!

Just look at this case for example: the incident which supposedly resulted in this "reprisal" was a robbery incident but that never made headline anywhere and even in this story, it was stated as though it didn't matter.

In the other incident reported to have taken place in Benue which claimed the life of an APC youth leader, the attack was a reprisal over the death of two Fulani men after they were attacked and their cattle rustled a couple of days earlier- the incident never made headline anywhere but was only stated in passing in a story whose headline read "Fulani herdsmen kill APC youth leader in Benue state"

Yesterday, a court upheld the death sentence of someone who killed a Fulani man and vanguard carried a screaming headline man to die for killing a Fulani man as though his sentence would have been less severe had the person he killed not been a Fulani man!! We never read any story anywhere reporting the murder incident!!

Time will tell.

I wonder when human lives would matter enough to this government for them to take drastic and urgent steps to curb the menace of these Boko Haram-turned-fulani-herdsmen.

It is apparent cows have more value than human beings.

So tragic.

The president must not be seen to be silent on the actions of these so-called herdsmen especially since they are his kinsmen. This sort of silence breeds resentment and is very capable of negating all the positives of this administration. I wonder what all his handlers ie Garba Shehu and Femi Adeshina are thinking. The president must come out and condemn, in no uncertain terms, these barbaric acts!
