Let's Wage War Against Mosquitoes by Kenmatt(m): 10:47am On Apr 25, 2016
Good morning to you all.

In as much as today is marked as "World Malaria Day", I would like us all to wage war against this dreaded insects called Mosquitoes.

During the period of our colonialism, ill effects of mosquito's bite which causes malaria resulted in the deaths of many white men which made them to tag Africa, " white man's grave ".

I am concentrating on mosquito because if there will be no mosquito, there will be no malaria. It is only the female mosquitoes that transmit this deadly disease. Yes it is because it feeds on blood. Male mosquitoes feed on nectar and do not transmit the disease.

Do you know that the life span of a female mosquito is forty- two to fifty-six days while that of a male is ten days.

Do you know that when it bites a pregnant woman, it is an important cause of stillbirths, infant mortality, abortion and low birth weight.

Do you also know that ill effect of its bite which is malaria is classified into either " severe or uncomplicated " by the World Health Organisation. (WHO).
It is severe when any of the following criteria are present, otherwise it is considered uncomplicated;

1- Decreased consciousness.
2- Significant weakness such that the person is unable to walk.
3- Inability to feed.
4- Low blood pressure.
5- Two or more convulsions.
6- Breath problems.
7- Circulatory shock
8- Kidney failure.

Since this year's theme for the World Malaria Day is "End Malaria for Good", is it possible that malaria can be eliminated and Mosquitoes completely wiped out?

Yes I think, there are some preventive and attacking measures through which this menace can be curbed.

Medication: Some malaria preventive and curative drugs are made to be sold over the counter so that every body can have free access in this fight against this disease.

Mosquito elimination and prevention of its bites: Nets, insects repellents, spraying of insecticide and draining of standing water should be a habit we should form.

In as much as malaria and Mosquitoes elimination were achievable in Europe, America and some part of north Asia, if all hands is on deck, we can equally achieve that and eventually end malaria for Good.
