Please oga se.un help me push to the front thread cos I need to reply this mail today.

I have a B.Sc Industrial Chemistry ( 4.01/5), Pgd Chemical Engineering ( Distinction ).

I applied for a Canadian admission for MSc.E Chemical Engineering. Normally for your admission to be successful you need to secure a supervisor whose research interest is similar to yours. I have done that and he encouraged me to apply. I submitted my application and after going through my application with other supporting documents like letter of motivation and others, he sent me a mail this afternoon that they want to consider me PhD instead of MSc I applied for. I'm very confused right now if to accept it or not considering high standard of education abroad as I use to hear, I haven't experienced foreign education before, this is my first. Please note my ultimate goal is to obtain a PhD. Please help me push to the front thread cos I need advice from experienced Nigerians who have studied abroad. Thanks. I appreciate

Bros, go for your MSC!! Its one step at a Time!! No hurry Bro ... Even the overall Unilag Best Graduate with Record breaking 5.0/5.0 will never skip msc for Phd. You don't get double promotion for Higher Degrees unlike primaries or high school. Its just a matter of 1yr and 6 months Max! And you're done with MSC. So why the Rush or hurry bro?

Don't panic bro, accept it. After all you may be asked if you wish to stop after M.sc or proceed directly to p.hD.
Since p.hD is your ultimate goal, this is a rare opportunity for you, grasp it!

I am very sure your academic transcript has been duly reviewed before your supervisor made such disclosure. You are not a starter in PG education going by your diploma in chem eng. So pull yourself together and be ready for the cognitive demands of PhD programme. On a final note.... do Nigeria proud! best of luck!

I appreciate your input bro. I think academically my supervisor knows a talent when he sees one. The guy is a professor emeritus. I think he's seeing what I'm not seeing yet. Don't you think someone can help you discover your destiny looking at your background. Talking about skipping MSc, I have a lot friends that have done it n came out successfully. My fear is i changed from Chemistry to Chemical Engineering and now about to skip MSc to PHD in Chemical Engineering. If it had been in Chemistry I for no bother. Don't say I'm confused cos I know what I want, in MSc I would be very comfortable and excel without fear but PhD, i don’t know what lies ahead for me. That's why I need advice from people who have schooled abroad. Thanks

Bro I appreciate. My interest in a PhD isn't to be lecturer now. My research is industrial based and applicable to government related issues in terms of making policies. Job prospects, I'm looking at IEA, IAEA and the likes. That's my plan and before now I wanted to take it one step at a time before this offer came in this afternoon and I need to reply tomorrow.

Do the PhD. I don't think M.Sc is free but PhD is definitely free. They'll even pay you a stipend if you are doing a PhD. In the US, this stipend is around $30,000 a year. I don't know about Canada. Secondly, you do not need to be scared of doing a PhD even if this is your first time abroad. Given that they are recommending that you are good enough for a PhD, then you must be a good student.

If you finish a PhD in Chemical Engineering, you will be sponsored by companies for nice jobs in Canada and getting a Canadian citizenship might be easier. This will not happen with just a M.Sc.

I am in Canada. I can help you push this through and give you all relevant information you may require about the school.

Whilst studying your PhD you could also enroll in master program on a part time basis.

Canada is beautiful but cold as Bleep..get ready for -30 in winter bro. Good luck

Go for Phd

You know why?
Your Supervisor isn't a fool for suggesting such, he surely knows what he's looking for

If you could make 4.01 and distinction in your UG and PGD respectively, I think you're an above average student, you shouldn't have issues coping with the challenges that lies ahead

If you're scared and you retreat to your Msc "Comfort zone", do you know what lies ahead?

Why not aim for the stars rather than roof tops, Phd is no mean feat, achieving it earlier is a thing of pride too

With prayers, research, good mentoring, hardwork and resilience, you'll not just cope but finish strong

I wish you the very best bro

Congratulations. Please accept the PhD offer and proceed. Accepting you for PhD means that you will get a scholarship offer and sometimes even some maintenance money.

Here in the UK some schools offer the 1+3 PhD which is a non-traditional PhD programme that accepts you for a PhD after a first degree. In some other schools the Masters is not a compulsory requirement.

Your supervisor has seen that you are talented. Besides your PGD with Distinction shows you have what it takes to successfully complete your research.

Brother, there is no big deal about foreign education. You will discover that things are easier outside the shores of Nigeria. There however will be some culture shocks though. All the best with your PhD

Its only in Africa that you need a Master degree before putting in for Phd. Even with your Bsc you can put in for PhD especially schools in the US. Pls go for it, afterall you have PGD. I still discussed this particular issue this evening with my a friend whose running her Masters in the US.

Bro, go for the PhD, I had colleagues from Chemistry background in chemical engineering grad school in the US who excelled! The truth in grad school is that if your advisor wants you, nothing/nobody can remove you!
There is nothing in Chemical Engineering grad school! You only need to open your mind and be passionate about adding value to the academic community. Good luck!

Nothing unusual about it.

Very common in UK. Only recently MSc/MA are demanded routinely (if you have 1.1 or 2.1 from a good/top university) before admission to PhD.

In any case, you're usually enrolled for MPhil initially and you can progress to PhD if your work meets required standard.

The only worry should talk of is funding.
If that's no issue and you did not lie about your academic credentials/practical experience, no fear.

Also try to find out the standard/quality of the university.

Very unlikely that McGill University or any other top university in Canada will make you such an offer. I may be wrong though.
