Please, let Chinua Achebe rest in peace. He was among the best, but not the best in Africa. The first black Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Prof. Wole Soyinka remains the greatest African writer, because he excelled in all the genres; plays in drama, essays, critical studies, translations and novels in prose and poetry. Soyinka translated Greek and Yoruba classic works to modern English. The next great writer from Nigeria after Soyinka is from my generation and he is Ben Okri who won the Booker Prize at 32 and no other Nigerian has achieved that literary feat. And what is left for him to win now is the Nobel Prize for Literature. Okri is awesome. I would have been next, but I lost 7 unpublished novels in transit and those novels were written in circumstances that cannot return again.

I'm surprised you remembered Ben Okri. I've forgotten the name of one of his books, but it was beautiful.

Having replied you; wole soyinka is evidently better being awarded the nobel prize in the field. He is a god regarding literature but he is an elusive writer who created an isolated niche for himself

The Op is not serious. He post a pedestrian question and then sits back to enjoy childish e-fight. If you ask him how many books of any the authors he has read, don't be surprised if it is zero

You cannot compare works of art.
African writers are extremely resourceful and talented.
A lot of people here have supported Soyinka or Achebe along ethnic lines; their folly and myopia is mind-boggling. Art is art, anywhere in the world.
Even as a Yoruba, Chinua Achebe's work will continually hold a dear place in my heart. I read Things Fall Apart for the first time at age 8 , and I havevread it a dozen times since then.
Other great African works of art include:
The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born-Ayi Kwei Armah
Why Are We So Blest-Ngugi wa Thiong'o
The Concubine-Elechi Amadi
Joys Of Motherhood-Buchi Emecheta
Madmen And Specialists-Wole Soyinka
Arrow of God-Chinua Achebe
Toads for Supper-Elechi Amadi
Sunset in Biafra-Chukwuemeka Ike

Wole Soyinka says he loathes any such comparison with Chinua.

He's gone further to say he would not even want to compare any of his own works with themselves.

Art and literary appreciation, according to him, is a function of mood at any given point in time.

I so much crave for Chinua's books sometimes, that I find myself reading "Arrow of God"'s publishers' names over and over. The next hour, it's Reuben Abati's archive I'm digging into online and offline. And would trash every Chinua's book that tries to stop me en route. That's mood!

Good readers don't compare authors, especially along ethnic lines. Everyone is useful in his time.

Beautifully nailed!

With all due respect to Soyinka I think the comparisons are unnecessary because it does not
help them improve instead it could lead to animosity between them

How can anybody expect Achebe to win a Nobel.?
This was the same person that eviscerated the racist book written by Joseph comrad called "heart of darkness", that was sort of like a European Bible those days. A book portraying Africans as sub human and incapable of rational thought.
Achebe spoke against the racist white establishment of those days and they angered by his guts, paid him back by denying him the Nobel.
He didn't win a Nobel, but he is by far the most globally respected, most popular, and most translated African writer of all times.

In the meeting of the edichie the white man's messenger came and ordered that the meeting be stopped. Okonkwo stood up terribly with hate. The white man's messenger repeated 'the white man whose power you know too well has ordered that the meeting be stopped. In a flash,Okonkwo drew his machete The white man's messenger stoop to avoid the blow. The effort was useless.Okonkwo's machete decended twice. The white man's messenger head was off from his uniformed body...

Achebe was jealous of soyinka's achievements in his lifetime but they were friends initially. Soyinka even plead for Biafra during the civil war

Possibly, African Child too.

In Africa, by my evaluation, none for now. Go back and read works like Arrow of God, Things Fall Apart, No Longer At Ease and the recently written, There Was A Country.

That!

Which is better: Nairaland or Facebook?

None is better, they're just different.

"Who is your favorite African/Nigerian Author" would be a better question, in my opinion.

therefore instead of we to aspire to be better than them we should play the busybody and begin to compare. Its just like saying messi is better than Ronaldo or vice versa
meanwhile what do you think was the reason for Achebe's jealousy

and you think if some of their books were written today it wouldn't have attracted more awards and conundrums the fact still remains man can never be a true judge of the human mind and its creativity cause it is boundless and it is impossible to know all the variables confined with it
