– The recent fuel subsidy removal by the government has not gone down well with many Nigerians
– Many are of the opinion that it will bring more hardship to the masses
– Others say the timing of the government’s introduction is wrong
Following the recent fuel subsidy removal by the federal government announced on Wednesday, May 11, the residents of Ibadan, Oyo state has trooped out onto the streets to protest.
According to The Punch, the Joint Action Front on Friday, May 13 organised a protest against the government’s policy which triggered the increase of a litre of fuel from N87 to N145.
The group led by its coordinator in Oyo state, Dr Demola Aremu started its march from University of Ibadan with a call on the federal government to reverse the decision in the interest of the Nigerian masses.
They also called on the federal government to fish out subsidy fraudsters, who they claimed were friends of government officials, and prosecute them accordingly.
The protest witnessed the heavy presence of market men and women who were in their hundreds, as they complained about the prices of food and the cost of living.
Dr Aremu, who is the immediate past national treasurer of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, while addressing the crowd, said the rally was held to sensitise Nigerians ahead of a bigger protest planned for next week.
According to him, the present administration had only given Nigerians negative changes in salary payment, power, food prices, roads and “fraud in the increment of price of fuel.”
“Any government that encourages petroleum product marketers to source for money from secondary market is unserious, fraudulent and irresponsible,” Dr Aremu opined.
He described the petrol price increment as a direct attack on the Nigerian people, adding that the only achievement of the present administration is high inflation.
Meanwhile, the senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani who is an ardent supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari has joined many Nigerians in rejecting the subsidy removal by the federal government.

Uninformed children of Adam. FG has not removed subsidy, it is still there. The new pump price is due to dollar scarcity. When they remove subsidy you will know ... the price of fuel will be like 200 naira
