Hi everyone
Please I need your advice regarding environmental toxicology. How lucrative and practicable is the course in Nigeria?
Re: How Lucrative Is Environmental Toxicology In Nigeria? by DICKtator: 6:37am On May 16, 2016
No idea.
But I am here to learn

Perhaps with all the oil spillage ,dumping and gas flaring in the country and no law to protect the environment, it may not be lucrative for now

But should be in the future?
Just get the degree and use it abroad!!

This question should no longer be asked by anyone trying to build a career in Nigeria. The choice of what was lucrative is a major reason why we have many poor medical doctors and Lawyers today. If you have a passion for Environmental Toxicology, please go for it without asking whether it's lucrative. Your passion for it will in the long run make you one of the most successful Toxicologists in the world and you won't even be limited to Nigeria.

Environmental toxicology is so limiting. .. why don't you do general toxicology?

Environmental courses are just so much now in Naija...Almost everyone has HSE...
so much competition and limited opportunities. .

The course is lucrative in Southern Nigeria especially where deforestation, bush burning, oil spillage and some other elements of environmental toxins 'fly around'. You've just got to choose your specialisation. Many international and local agencies would value your service.

Work with which hospital? Me weee be doctor still de look for government or NGO work since I finish NYSC three years ago come be environmental toxico....wetin. Guy,if you want to stay in Nigeria, study a known course except you have a godfather that can put you in a good ministry because with a good godfather you can work anywhere irrespective of what you studied. The course will be better appreciated by foreign agencies or international bodies but not in Nigeria except maybe in the future. If you're from a poor background like me,just look for a course that can put at least two meals daily on your table immediately you graduate.

It's very lucrative... In Nigeria, there's a law which compels all investors that intend to set up an oil&gas facility or chemical process facility to conduct an environmental impact assessment before operations. In the past 5yrs, more than 50 of such facilities have been setup & even more will come up in the next 10yrs; especially in the downstream sector of the oil&gas & chemical process plants.

@op, u can see that the future is very bright.

Hello Op, seems majority of people contributing to this topic are students. The idea that environmental toxicology does not sell in Nigeria is a fallacy even though not so many Related firms are springing up every day. An that's where the opportunity lies. I have friends who have taken environmental toxicology as a path and have a built family with it. All they needed to do was to work with a firm for a short time for the industry experience afterwards resigned to start theirs. You don't become an ecotoxicologist in a day. It's a gradual process. Don't jump the order! U mustn't always plan to work for people eternally. As an ecotoxicologist, your aim is to be a consultant. Then you will operate by your rules, utilize your experience to take in money.
Environmental companies in Nigeria have too much in their hands and they resort to manufacturing figures. The use fake data! So there exist plenty opportunities. Again the pay is not much, but if you start early u will be better of than ur colleagues.
Just do it!

Environmental Toxicology is a branch of environmental science that deals with toxic (poisonous) Substance. I wil actually prefer it as an area of specialization as in MSc, etc.
However, i believe it will be lucrative because the world is going green and taking environment seriously now.
DPR, NESREA, etc will be waiting for you.

Nothing bad in it, owing to the fact that we have many industries and firm who don't adhere to environmental laws in Nigeria. My advise, if u are going to be studying toxicology, dnt stop there...procceed for HSE 1,2 & 3 and even NEBOSH...this will boost your chances of getting a job.
