Nurses are often commended for having
‘the patience of a saint’, for our
bottomless supply of kindness and
willingness to work all the hours under
the sun… of course, it’s never quite as
simple as it seems.

Nurses are human too, and just like
everyone else, little things we hear
every day can get under our skin. When
we hear them a few too many times, it
starts to itch…
So, just what should you never say to a
nurse?

1. ‘So why didn’t you become a doctor?’

Never say this to us. Never. Whether
you’re trying to imply that we’re smart
enough to make it through medical
school, or the opposite… it doesn’t
matter.
Nursing and medicine are two
completely different jobs and trust us,
we wouldn’t be nurses if we didn’t want
to be.
We’re definitely not in it for the money,
anyway – not when the Government is
giving us a 1 per cent pay rise and
keeping 10 times as much as that for
themselves…

2. ‘Nurses just help the doctors out,
right?’

No, not quite.
Doctors make decisions based on the
information we give them because we’re
around our patients the whole time,
monitoring them, talking to them,
observing them, whereas doctors nearly
always have somewhere else to be and
something else to do.
It isn’t that we help the doctors, it’s that
we make it possible for the doctors to
do their jobs at all.
When something goes wrong… who do
you think is going to be next to you
first?

3. ‘What’s happening to…?’

Think about it for a moment. Would you
want us to go telling your neighbour all
about your medical care? I doubt it.
Please don’t ask us: we can’t possibly
explain, and having to tell you that is
slightly embarrassing… if not for you,
then definitely for us.

4. ‘Can you score me…?’

Just because you’ve seen Gregory
House mainlining vicodin like it’s water,
and Nurse Jackie slipping oxycodone
into her scrubs pockets… doesn’t mean
that’s what healthcare professionals
can actually get away with.
Not to mention the fact that it’s more
than just a little bit illegal. (Yes, we
watch those shows too. Apparently, we
just can’t get enough of it…)

5. ‘Anyone can be a nurse.’

Yep, anyone can make it through a
numeracy exam and a formal interview
before even being offered a place at
university.
And anyone can to get through three
years of university education, spending
50 per cent of their course doing the job
of a nurse, while collecting a bursary
that might barely add up to a third of a
qualified nurse’s salary.
16 things only student nurses will
understand
And anyone can do that while also
writing essays and revising for exams,
before getting character references to
prove they are in fact a good enough
person to enter this workforce that’s
being cut left, right and centre despite
the opposite being needed.

6. ‘I mean, all you do is empty urine
bags and bring dinner, right?’

Well, no – there’s also the handling of
controlled drugs, measuring what your
vital organs are up to, looking out for
things going wrong. And if they do,
knowing what to do about it if there’s
no doctor around.
Someone will be watching over you
24/7, making notes, ensuring that
everything is documented so that no
matter who’s in charge of the next shift,
everybody knows how well you’ve been,
how well they should expect you to be,
and how quickly to react if something
seems to be changing.
If there was one right thing said on
Nurse Jackie, it was this: ‘Doctors
diagnose. Nurses save lives.’
Sure, the doctors do a lot of hard work.
But they make their decisions based on
what we tell them.

7. ‘What’s taking so long?!’

Any number of things: the other patients
that you’re here on the ward with. A
phonecall from a concerned family
member. A visitor asking if they can
take their relative off the ward for some
fresh air and a coffee.
Making notes about your care.
Concentrating on making sure I don’t
give someone the wrong kind of drug or
the wrong amount.
Again, our job is far more complicated
than it probably looks!

8. ‘Hellooooo, nurse!’

Yes, yes, the sexy nurse trope. We
know. But really?
Our uniform looks like pyjamas, and
we’ve just been cleaning your urinary
catheter.
Even if it wasn’t gross professional
misconduct to have a fling with a
patient who thinks we’re hot… we
probably don’t feel terribly attractive in
scrubs, and it’s very unlikely we’ve got
a thing for someone who we’ve seen in
that situation…

9. ‘Do you only date doctors?’

Whilst I’m sure it’s true that some
nurses get into relationships with co-
workers, those nurses who do feel
they’ve got the time and energy for a
relationship almost certainly don’t want
to be going home to someone they see
at work…
Who wants to hear about medicine over
breakfast, lunch AND dinner?

10. ‘Why don’t you just smile?’

We work long hours, we listen to the
things on this list every day, constantly
feeling like our profession isn’t
respected at all, and it’s been days
since we properly sat down with our
families.
We’re overworked and short-staffed,
and sometimes, we just want to sit
down and cry. But we keep on keeping
on…

11. And lastly… ‘I’m just a nurse…’

Yeah, that’s right. This one goes out to
all the other nurses out there.
If there’s one thing I hate hearing more
than anything else, it’s nurses putting
themselves down.
Exhausted nurse sums up what many
NHS workers think of Jeremy Hunt
We slog all hours of the day, we do the
seven-day-service that the government
is trying to ‘introduce’, we work hard for
our patients and their families and
carers, and we work weird shift patterns
that interfere with our social lives.
It’s very possible that, in order to
ensure other people have the best lives
they can, we miss our own kids growing
up.
We are never ‘just a nurse’. We are
amazing!

Nurses in Nigeria, especially the Government owned hospitals are HORRIBLE!

They are rude, temperamental, unwilling to help and act like you owe them a huge favor- on top money wey you dey pay!

Don't tell me they are human too! That's cow dung cos the profession is service to humanity and YOU OUGHT TO KNOW THAT BEFORE CHOOSING TO BE PART OF SUCH NOBLE PROFESSION!

Truly, many go into it ONLY as a last resort!

And u think all these things are applicable to the horrible ones here in naija?

How can we carry something wey de happen for another country come drop am for naija.

Especially dat no1, 90% of naija nurses are doing it because of the economy, either for the money or because their parents wants them to do it.

No be all these ones wey de squeeze face anyhow? De scold patients like say na dem be d cause of their misfortunes in life?

There is nothing like "career" in this country as far back as 25yrs ago to dis very moment.

What we all do is trying to survive.

Doctors? 60% of naija doctors are doctors because their parents wants to answer mama or papa doctor or because of the pay packages and some goodies they get from the profession based on the high standards and respects created for medical doctors by our fathers or grand fathers. The medical doctors of today are so different from that of the past. I know of a doctor that will ask u if u are really sick or hungry( funny enough, majority are not in good frame of mind because of poverty and not becos of medical problems) if later is the case, he will dip hand inside his pocket, bring out some money, give to u to go and get something to eat. Funny enough, such patients don't come back because they are now ok(they were never sick, but the hardship of life makes them think they are, thus coming to the hospital). This man spends more than 18hrs a day in d hospital a day attending to patients, dis man will come out to attend to patients in d middle of the night, this man will attend to u until u are ok b4 billing u, and if u don't have the money, u pay what u have @ d moment.
Now, this is a real doctor that wanted to work for humanity and not for the money. (some of u will ask how he sustains his hospital and pay d nurses, well, not all patients are poor, he gets rich ones too, rich one that give donations, rich ones that will come to the hospital and ask for people that has been discharged and had no money to pay and pay for dem because of the kindness of the doctor).

This same thing I explained is applicable to many professions in naija, doctors, nurses, bankers, teachers and loads of them, engineers and lawyers(some just want to answer that name, barrister or even to intimidate others, some just love the name, engr, because of the past glory and respect accorded to them. Well, certainly not this generation, whatever we do today, we do it to survive, but I can't blame anyone for that, "na condition make crayfish bend" I blame our leaders past and present for allowing things degenerate to this extent. But do we fold our arms and allow things go worst? NO.

My sincere gratitude to DR MIKE IWEKA (ezim memorial hospital obosi) of blessed memory. It's been years since u died, but u still lives fresh in the hearts of obosi people and environs.

So, op, if u are not a naija nurse, abeg bring down this thread, because u don't know how mean and wicked these people are, my grandma died because of their carelessness (overdose of insulin)

There is no exception here sis, even the ones in private hospitals are the same, they only comport themselves @times for fear of being sacked immediately by the hospital management.

After watching scrubs, greys anatomy and hearing from some of my aunts that are nurses abroad, I had wanted to marry a nurse, but as I grew up and had many encounters with them, I come to detest them, even the naija set of doctors that carry themselves as if to say na God dem be.

90% of naija Govt hospital nurses are wicked and evil. They act as if death is no biggie. Can you imagine a set of nurses refusing to attend an old woman because she had painful sores and couldn't turn well in bed for the nurse to give her injection. Nurse became angry and yelled at the old woman and her son said to the nurse... Aunty take it easy Na, you can see she is an old woman if it was you this kind of thing happen to, you will feel the same way too. This pain is not easy for an old woman. Na so nurse go gather all her fellow nurses and they accused the boy of cursing their friend. Could you believe they refused to treat that old woman for 4days? Yes, they abandoned her there until someone threatened to go to the police. Many Govt nurses are evil.

Nigerian Nurses are the most wicked nurses ever. I will not forget the very black witch at NNPC hospital kaduna who deliberately allow my blood to flow into the drip bag after the drip had finished. Even when my mum was calling her attention, she deliberately refused to stand up, she was just sitting there watching TV, not until my blood started flowing to the drip bag as if I was a blood donor, my mum had no option but to remove the syringe herself and that was when the fool of a nurse started to shout that who ask my mum to remove to it. I gave her the lashing of her life that day and when my dad came in, she saw he wasn't a small person in the company and she started to beg. The same nurse was assigned to remove stitches from my surgery and I refused until another nurse was called to do it. That same nurse refused to attend to my mum when she was in labour because she didn't want blood stains not until someone helped my mum out.
This is just the little I can write about them as my experiences with them is very long. Nigerian nurses are mean and don't care if you die. Please be careful if you come across one.
