Here are five ways Nigeria, ironically, Legitimizes discrimination against women and the girl child:

CITIZENSHIP
Did you know that section 26 (2) (a) of the 1999 Nigerian constitution denies a woman the right to confer citizenship statues on her foreign husband but grants such rights to a foreign woman married to a Nigerian male?

ASSAULT
The criminal code doles out harsher punishment – felony – for assault against a man. Be you a woman, it is misdemeanour. Read here what section 353 of the criminal code says: “Any person who unlawfully and indecently assaults any male person is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years. The offender cannot be arrested without warrant.” And read here what 360 says: “Any person who unlawfully and indecently assaults a woman or girl is guilty of a misdemeanor, and is liable to imprisonment for two years.”

MARRIAGE
Under Nigeria’s penal code guiding the northern parts of the country, “Nothing is an offence, which does not amount to the infliction of grievous harm upon any person and which is done by a husband for the purpose of correcting his wife. Such husband and wife being subject to any natural law or custom in which such correction is recognized as lawful.”

WORK
Section 55 of the Labor act bans women from working in the night. “No woman shall be employed on night work in a public or private industrial undertaking or in any branch thereof, or in any agricultural undertaking or any branch thereof.”

POLICE
This must take the biggest piece – the police regulation. Section 121 to 126 regulates the affairs of women in the way it does not regulate males.
Women police officers shall, as a general rule, be employed for duties that are concerned with women and children only. Married women cannot enlist in the police. Where an enlisted single woman wants to get married, she must have spent two years in the police and then apply for permission to marry.

She must furnish the police with particulars of fiancé who must be investigated and cleared before permission is granted. A married woman police officer “shall not be granted any special privileges by reason of the fact that she is married and shall be subjected to posting and transfer as it were unmarried.”
In addition, police women are required to place the alphabet ‘W’ before their rank.
• For Compensation, Gratuity and Disability Pensions: provision was made for payment only to “wife‟ or “widow‟. No reference to spouses (husbands)
• Police women married to civilian husbands are disallowed from living in police barracks.
• Travel allowance made only for accompanying ‘wife’ and children. No husbands.

Also, an unmarried woman police officer who is pregnant shall be discharged from the force.

Marital rape
Can a man rape his wife? Yes, but not in Nigeria. Under the Nigerian criminal law, a man cannot rape his wife. Section 182 of the Penal Code provides that “sexual intercourse by a man with his own wife is not rape if she has attained puberty.” Those advocating for recognition of marital rape claim that this provision condones defilement of young girls.

Onerous burden of proof in sexual offenses
Section 221 of the Criminal Code, which deals with defilement of girls less than 16 years, stipulates that a person cannot be convicted of the offence of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl being of or above thirteen years and under sixteen years of age; or knowing a woman or girl to be an idiot or slowpoke, has or attempts to have unlawful carnal knowledge of her, upon the uncorroborated testimony of one witness.

Indecent assaults on males and females
The Criminal Code discriminates against women on the issue of punishment against personal assaults. If you assault a man, it is a felony (serious offense). If you assault a woman, it is a misdemeanor (less serious offense). Section 353 of the Criminal Code provides that “Any person who unlawfully and indecently assaults any male person is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years. The offender cannot be arrested without warrant.” Conversely, Section 360 provides that “Any person who unlawfully and indecently assaults a woman or girl is guilty of a misdemeanor, and is liable to imprisonment for two years.”

Our twitter senator, Ben Bruce, can take this up. The relevant constitutional provisions should be amended.

Its unconscionable that such laws still exist on the books.

The so-called constitution, is nothing but a fraud.

After Abacha died, the new military regime setup a constitution review committee and in less than two months, they came up with a constitution. What's worse, they did not consult with the Nigerian people during the constitutional making process and they handed it down to Nigerians nonetheless.

With the 1999 constitution still being used as the sovereign law of the land, social, political and economic development will continue to elude Nigeria.

Nigeria will not progress with such an injustice that they call a constitution.

That ministry is unnecessary and, at worst, absolutely condescending.

The Marriage Act (Marriage Act, Chapter 218, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990) provides that written consent is necessary where either party to an intended marriage is under 21 years. However, this consent must be from the father: a mother’s consent is only acceptable if the father is dead or of an unsound mind (Section 118, Marriage Act, 1990). Beyond a shadow of doubt, it is clear that acceptability of the consent based on the gender of the parent is unnecessary, discriminatory and serves no known practical or legal purpose other than to perpetuate the stereotype that treats Nigerian women as chattel and second class citizens.

The Personal income tax decree, Chapter 104 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1993): Under these laws, a married woman will only be allowed to claim tax relief based on the number of dependents she has if she can show that she has separated from her husband by deed or by an order of the High Court (Section 3 personal income law decree above). This requirement does not apply to divorced or separated men. This legislation is still based on the premise that married women and their children are maintained by their husbands. As a result, single mothers and wives who bear the main financial responsibility in a household are denied the tax relief that men are entitled to.

Don't compare the constitution of a regressively developing country like Nigeria with that of developed countries.

Nigeria is a fruit in the process of ripening, but starting to rot halfway to ripening.

These are a few ways the Nigeria descrimates against men.

1. MALE GENITAL MUTILATION.
Do you know that about 70% of males in the world are intact I.e. not genitally mutilated?
Our constitution bars FGM but MGM is okay.
Some will say GOD okays MGM. Well, GOD didn't okay it. The white man just told us his GOD okays it and despite our education, we're still stupid to know better.
Our traditional religion told us our GOD okays FGM. With education, we've realised that practice is bad. Yet we weren't afraid of applying it because it has to do with the girl child. The one that has to do with the male child, who cares?

2. MEN AFFAIRS
Ghana has a Ministry of Gender Affairs. Nigeria has a Ministry of Women Affairs. Ghaninians are smarter than us in this regard.

3. RAPE
Nobody cares when a woman rapes a man.

4. VIOLENCE
A banker in lagos severed her husband's manhood because he was broke. The story was in all major blogs yet no one batted an eyelid. The woman was invited to the station and was given an earful by the police but no charges were filled. Infact, a radio station in PH had it achors laugh at the man.

5. LIFE WORTH
The worth of a male life is less than that of a female's.
In 2014, BH attacked 2 coed schools. They killed and kidnapped some school boys only. The number of school boys kidnapped in both episodes are about 200. How many times have you heard of BRINGBACKOURBOYS or BRINGBACKOURBOYSANDGIRLS?

6. EMPLOYMENT
All job seekers know female applicants are given extra marks.
For example, a coy wants 10 people and the top 10 test scorers are all male. If the last male i.e. the 10 male scored 73% while the cut off was 70% and a female scored 70%, that female will be chosen and the male will be dropped.

7. MARRIAGE
Bride price? List? Is the man free of charge?
Nobody forces a woman to take the man's name.
Both surnames can be hyphenated:
NGOZI OKONJO-IWEALA
OMOTOLA JALADE-EKEINDE
DIEZANI ALLISON-MADUEKE

I think parts of our constitution is sexist against women though.

Women should work at night.
Women should be allowed to be foot soldiers on the frontlines. They should be the main MOPOL officers for female politicians. No male MOPOL should protect female politicians.
