I cannot say with strut that these are my favourite novels but what I can say is: they sure did make a strong impression on me.

'Ill Winds' by Olagoke Olalekan: Every letter in this book is a MAGNUM OPUS.
At some point, I always had this book on me wherever I went like a Vade Mecum.
It's so well-thumbed that I can recount the words on its first two pages verbatim.

'The Last Tsar: Life and death of Nicholas II' by Edvard Radvinsky.

'Purple Hibiscus' by Chimamanda Adichie: Every flipping word in this book is also piece dè resistance!.

'Things Fall Apart' by Chinua Achebe: Even TDE's Kendrick Lamar made allusions to this beautiful piece in 'King Kunta'.

'Da Vinci Code' by Dan Brown: I have read all of Brown's novels and this one in particular stuck out like a sore thumb, in a positive way.

'The Appeal' by John Grisham'.

'1984' by George Orwell.

Other notable mentions: Fifty Shades Of Grey, Fifty Shades Of Darker, Animal Farm, Oliver Twist, Anastasia: The Last Grand Duchess.

I happen to read one of James Hardley Chase's books and I was anything but terribly disappointed. Boredom almost nagged me to death. After all the tiresome sermons preaching his hype, there was nothing to make valid the praises.

Hardley Chase wasn't overhyped. Far from it.
Believe me, he was a pen master. Some of his novels are masterpieces. Even though it's been long I read them, he's still got my heart. Don't mind people saying, "all Hardley Chase novels" he wrote some one hundred and four books and it's not possible for all to be interesting. You read only one and that is not enough to make conclusive statement about them.
Let me recommend some of the very interesting ones for you:
- My laugh comes last
- Hit and run
- There is always a price tag
- What's better than money?
- Tiger by the tail
- Well now my pretty
- The wary transgressor
- One bright summer morning
- You are dead without money
- i'll bury my dead. Etc
Try and read them, you won't be sorry. You will see that he wasn't praised for nothing.

You are right. An author's proficiency shouldn't be judged by one work, but that one work can give a discerning mind a little insight into his unique skill, and it promises to an extent, what's to come next. Although this norm is not always consistent. You never know.

I will try the books you suggested, anyway. Maybe after reading them my perception of him might change.
Thank you.
