The world is a noisy and interruptive place that you sometimes try hard to wall yourself away from. Yes, out of reflex many times. Indeed, there is need to wall off as much as you can. In those private corners of your existence may be where you find all the pieces that make up who you really are.

Privacy is an instrument of finding the self. It is seen as something we require in our development of a sense of self-identity. Irwin Altman tried to describe how this happens. Altman believes that the barriers imposed by privacy on the self 'define and limit the boundaries of the self' and thus 'serve to help [define the self].'

Through knowing ourself more, we can know how to help ourself grow. Self-growth is a part of the process of developing self-identity. This was suggested by Hyman Gross when he explained that, without privacy - solitude, anonymity and temporary releases from social roles - individuals would be unable to freely express themselves and to engage in self-discovery and self-criticism. We need to constantly run self-discovery and self-criticism to help understand and sharpen our sense of self-identity.

You can easily lose yourself out in the noisy and interruptive world, becoming what the noise and distractions around you influence you to be. The only way to find your true self will be in your privacy. But it is hard to wall yourself away from a world that is so loud and invasive. Apart from government policy to protect your privacy in your society and business policy to ensure your privacy in your workplace, you will need to always make effort to establish your privacy.

Everyone has a right to keep away themselves or information about themselves. It is a natural human right. 19th-century American writers Samuel D. Warren and Louis Brandeis described this as the 'right to be let alone'. It is no crime. Let some of the people around you call it self-isolation or secrecy. It is your choice to give in to the noisy and intrusive world and lose yourself, or refuse to lower the walls of your privacy and find yourself.

You can start from your physical environment and then your relationships. Choose where you spend time and with who, choose what information you share and how you share it. These days, with the technology of the internet, you tend to have the walls of your privacy almost removed. You are connected to places and people beyond your physical reach, and that is a lot more to deal with. You can still control your privacy anyway. Look for the privacy policy that comes with the technologies you wish to use before you start using them. On social networks, like Facebook and Twitter, you have the option of customising how you want your privacy to be handled.

Who can be a better companion for you on your journey of self-discovery and self-criticism than yourself? None. You will come to agree, if not yet.
