STRAIGHT STITCHES

A straight stitch is the most common stitch in sewing. It is a simple way to connect two pieces of fabric. A very loose straight stitch can be used to gather fabric. The tighter the straight stitch, the more secure the connection of the fabric will be.

Basting /tacking stitch is used to temporarily hold pieces of cloth or fabric together.
basting stitch can be removed after the permanent stitches has been completed.

To Sew a basting stitch use about half inch stitch with equal length of spaces in between.

#Jumpsuit tutorial
This is a free hand cutting method otherwise called bespoke fashion. Since I was unable to take pictures of the real garment I will illustrate with an origami

#Steps
Back bodice
1 . Fold fabric into 2 and measure length of the upper part 17"(it is below the navel)
2. Measure shoulder length and mark (mine is 16"(divided into two)
3. Measure and mark neckline width 3"and depth 1"
4. . Measure and mark armhole depth (mine is 7")
5. Measure and mark bust (mine is 38÷4=9.5+0.5seam allowance =10)
6. . Measure and mark waist line (mine is 32"÷4=8+0.5seam allowance =9.5"
7. Cut out your bodice
Front Bodice
Same as back except neck depth of 3"
Measure and mark the shirt collars. (if you are making a collar for the first time, you can measure round your neck to get the right Measurement. You should also measure round the sewn bodice so that you do not run into trouble)
Then Cut
Trouser part
1. Length of trouser (mine is 35 "+0.5seam allowance)
2. Waist (same as above)
3. I measured in between leg and lap while seated (if it was not measured like when seated, you will not feel comfortable because the lap will be tight and in between your legs be tight as well)
4. Measure and mark your ankle circumference and cut
After sewing, put the piece together and join. Use overlock(serger) to sew the inside for a professional look.

The new word for today is color blocking

Color blocking is a popular design trend that involves mixing solid colors or the wearing of multiple articles of solid-colored clothing in a single outfit in order to create a fashion statement.

If you love bright colors, it’s easy to incorporate colour blocking blocking into your own wardrobe

it is easy to create fashion illusions with color blocking as it accentuate body shapes, making people look taller and thinner.

Color blocking opens the door to fun and unusual color combinations.

Try pairing your favorite blue shirt with a bright fuschia jacket, or Pair a green jacket with a red handbag.

The idea is really simple. Take one vibrant color and pair it with an equally vibrant, yet different color. You can do this with tops and skirts or dresses and leggings,, a handbag or shoes.

If you don't wish to have two or three solid colors on at the same time, you can go for a more subdued color block by using a neutral color like white, black, or grey with a bold color to let the color pop without overdoing it.

The new word for today is

Bias Binding

Bias binding is a strip of fabric cut on bias used to bind or cover edges. It is also called bias tape,

Because it is cut on bias it makes the fabric stretchier as well as more fluid and more drapeable compared to a strip that is cut on the grain
Being stretchy allows the fabric to be used to give a neat edge around curves.
If you have used fabric cut on the grain to pipe a neck line or armhole you will discover that the piping does not run smoothly rather you will see some places will be squeezing no matter how much you try or the number of times you have to loose and re-sew .
You can prevent this from happening by cutting your binding fabric on bias.

Sewing bias binding onto the edges of fabric is a way to cover the raw edges and add interest to a garment, blanket, or other item. You can sew bias binding with a single fold so that all of the binding appears on one side of the fabric’s edge, or you can sew bias binding so that half of the bias binding appears on each side of the fabric’s edge.

Sewing #leather

Can a regular sewing machine sew leather? Answer Yes. With the right sewing needle, right sewing foot, right thread and right tension you can sew your leather on a regular sewing machine. A regular sewing machine will not sew some leather especially when it becomes thick. Regular sewing machine will not sew some corners perfectly..
Why Is a Leather Sewing Machine Needed?
The one real problem that there is with leather crafting is that you can’t make any mistakes. All it takes is one stitch in the wrong spot and you’ve got a worthless material sitting in front of you. The reason is that when you sew on leather you create a permanent hole in the product! To prevent this from happening experience and the right type of machine is required for you to sew Like a Pro especially if you intend to go commercial. Today's new word

Pinking Shears

Pinking shears are scissors, that have a sawtooth that fit together and creates a zigzag pattern instead of a straight edge on fabric.

It can be used for decorative cuts.
When a zigzag pattern is created at the edge of a fabric, fraying is prevented. (thread will stop coming out of the fabric)

So when you don't want to hem or bind a seam allowance, but you are worried about fraying, pinking shears come to the rescue. It is also useful when you don't have a Serger for your inner seam.

Get one for yourself if you have not done that already.

stitches.
It consists of a handle, shaft and head. The head is usually forked
with a cutting surface situated at the base of the fork. One side of the fork has a sharp point that allows easier insertion in tight stitching. The blade rips through the thread and once the seam has been undone in this way the loose ends can be removed and the seam resewn.

Today's new word is

Bustier

A bustier is a piece of clothing for women that fits close to the top part of the body and does not cover the shoulders or arms. It is similar to a corset that is, like a combination of waist cinch and brassiere. It ends at the waist or extends to the hips.

It can be worn under a see-through top to push up the bust and shape the waist.

Corsets and bustiers are often confused. What’s different between the two? In simplest terms, a corset "cinches" your waist, while a bustier "boosts" your breasts.

Bustiers can look very hot with high waisted pants or jeans.

Today's new word is

Placket

A placket is a slit or opening in a garment that allows room for the garment to be put on. Plackets are most commonly found at the neck, the wrist, the top of a skirt, or the front of trousers. They can be finished with a hem or overlapping pieces that allow the placket to be hidden. Closures such as buttons, snaps, hooks, zippers, or Velcro™ are often incorporated into a placket.

Modern plackets often contain fabric facings or attached bands to surround and reinforce fasteners such as buttons , snaps, or zippers construction. This is done to give support and strength to the placket fabric because the placket and the fasteners on it are often subjected to stress when the garment is worn.

What is a raised placket?

It is a visible placket, also known as American placket. Found most often on everyday dress shirts and casual shirts, the shirt fabric is folded back over the front and stitched to create a visible strip of raised fabric (sometimes an extra strip of fabric is attached instead of just folding.

A button-front shirt without a separate pieced placket is called a "French placket. The fabric is simply folded over and the buttonhole stitching secures the two layers (or three layers if there is an interlining)

If the buttons are concealed by a separate flange or flap of the shirt fabric running the length of the placket, it is called a "fly front."

How to apply stones to Ankara dress

Applying stones to your garment is very simple. Why do I say so? This is because after you have done the main job of sewing, stoning is just an embellishments. It is like the garnishing in your food that makes it appealing. Like the icing on your cake. Now you know how stoning can make your work look
They can make all the difference to your outfit.
Stones comes in different sizes and colors. Some are iron on to clothes(hot fix) while some are glued.

How to apply the iron on stone?

Arrange the stones according to the desired shape you want. The press a hot iron on the stone leaving it for some minutes. The reason for this is that the stones have glue under it. The hotness of the iron will melt the glue allowing it to stick to the garment.
To check if the stones are glued in place raise garment up. If any stone falls you can glue that in place using your iron.
When you are sure you have completed a particular design, move to the next.

For the stones without glue under it. You can use glue gun to apply the stones one after the other. Applying as desired.

Today's new word is

Vent
A vent is a vertical slit or opening in the back seam of a jacket or a skirt , generally for flexibility, to give a little bit of extra mobility, the ability to move freely.

Today there are three styles of vent: the single-vented style (with one vent, either directly at the center or roughly 3 cm to the right); the ventless style; and the double-vented style (one vent on each side). Vents are convenient, particularly when using a pocket or sitting down, to improve the hang of the jacket.

Ventless jackets are associated with Italian tailoring, while the double-vented style is typically British. For instance, dinner jackets traditionally take no vents.)
On skirts, vents are particularly associated with
pencil skirts where they may be necessary for free movement, but they may also be added for reasons of style, as they have the effect of exposing more of the legs. The most common style is a single vent of a suitable length at the back of the skirt, but they may be located anywhere.

Today's new word is

Patch work

Patchwork is a form of needlework that involves sewing together small pieces of fabric t into a larger design. The larger design is usually based on repeating patterns built up with different fabric shapes (which can be different colors). These shapes are carefully measured and cut, making them easy to piece together.

Patchwork is often used to make quilts , but bags, wall-hangings, warmjackets, cushion covers, skirts, waistcoats and other items of clothing .

Patchwork and quilting are often mentioned in the same breath, as they are often combined in the same project, but they are two very different techniques.
Patchwork is the art of sewing together pieces of fabric to form a pattern or block. When enough blocks have been made, they can be sewn together to form a quilt top.
Quilting is the sewing together of the three layers that make up a quilt - the top, the central wadding, and the backing.

The beauty of patchwork is that you can use up odds and ends of fabric, recycle your old clothes and create something beautiful and unique in the process.

Have you ever been told to pipe the neckline or sleeve and you wonder. "What is Pipe?"

Today's new word is

Blind stitches

A blind stitch in sewing is a method of joining two pieces of fabric so that the stitch thread is invisible, or nearly invisible. The stitch is made so as to be invisible on the right side and often nearly invisible on the wrong side

A sewing machine can also create a blind hem. In this case, a special presser foot( Blind stitch foot) is needed. A zigzag stitch technique may be used with a sewing machine to create a blind stitch. You can still create this invisible hem line with some practice and your standard presser foot

The blind-hem stitch is primarily used for hemming curtains, trousers, skirts, etc.      The blind hem stitch is one of those finishes that you see in many professionally made garments and draperies. When sewing a blind stitch, use a matching colored thread.

Blind hem stitching made on sewing machine is perfect for hemming garments from woolen or some other thick fabrics. In this case the hem stitches are barely noticeable on face side of clothes.
Why not try it for a professional finishing instead of a regular hemming.
