How Do You Verify Prices When Your Mech Gives You A List Worth 70k by Nobody: 10:23pm On Jun 17, 2016
my mech gave me a list with about 70k. to say I was weak is an understatement. didn't even know where to start pricing from as I have zero idea of the parts. I eventually gave him sha but I want to know the styles, strategy, established methods you guys employ to beat the gimmicks of these mechs. you'll agree with me it's a common thing? BTW, I have changed mech like five times and it's always same feeling of hiking I get plus those previous ones never kill the issues like this present one

Paying 70k is better than paying 5k and in the end coming back to pay 70k. Am not saying 70k is easy to cough out but if he is knowledgeable to get the job right once and for all. Then that saves a whole lot of stress. Baba silifa wouldn't mind collect 4k for the same job a professional would want to collect 70k grin

get the quote, buy the parts, pay labour. My job would be much easier if every customer could do that.

his spending 70k does not in any way guarantee dat he will do a good job. infact, d 5k guy might jst know his stuff better. my advice to d op will be for him to try & learn a few things about his car, d parts & d market dat way he can always go & buy d damaged parts himself w/o fear of being swindled

The best to get your own spare part vendors, like three of them so you can compare prices when you are buying spare parts. Just ask the mechanics for their workmanship and make sure they are correct with troubleshooting of the fault so you don't waste money on spare parts, because they do guess work a lot.

If you reside in Port-harcourt, what stop's you from going to IKOKU yourself to find out things or better still send your friend to go inquire for you and you'll discover that list of 70K ain't up to 30K.

You can get ask some of your friends to take you to their mechanics also and compare the prices. Though the difference may not be more than 5k.

Sometimes when one gives free advice on this forum, is never valued. After today's advice, I will be considering collecting consultation fee. Now if you re in lagos and you know ladipo, then ur problem is half solved. Your mechanic will list all the things you need to buy with there prices. With the list in ur hand tell him u are a salary earner and ur brother sales parts at ladipo. That you want to collect all those parts on credit from him so that month end u can start paying him gradually. At this point he will gladly accept because this doesn't affect his workman charges. With that list visit ladipo with the help of someone that knows the terrain and u will see u can only spend like half of that money he charged u for everything. This is a practical method tht worked for me. Again cos I speak igbo I didn't ve any problem bargaining price and also getting there assuraance that what they sold to me is original and tht I can return it if my mechanic says is fake. It will be boldly written on the receipt issued.

Big lie,

Even with 70k some will still install used or fake parts in your vehicle .

It depends on the type of car. Some cars need specialists that charge heavily while the regular cars can be handled by any road side mechanic.

@op, just pack the car home and get good quotes from three genius parts dealers.
When your spare part are ready invite the Mechanic to come install them.

Make sure you know the spare parts you gave him or else na story you go hear.

Mechs are devils created in the Nigerian system to torment car owners.

If I tell you how much mechs gain working for me, but I don't really care.

They never use the money for something good. My only problem is they are the reason a lot of cars on nigeria roads are in bad state.

I have a bill of 50k presently from a new mech, for now I just they manage the car, not even interested.

Lol, makes sense....because I have a feeling most mechs pad up their prices for extra revenue.
The problem I have with going to Ladipo myself is
1. Finding time.....usually very busy Monday to Saturday...
2. Getting someone experienced in Ladipo affairs to go with me.

So I usually just end up giving him the money for whatever price he calls, even though I suspect they are grossly padded.

I mechanic once installed a switch that he got from the market which did not correct the problem on the car, while I was suggesting that the problem was wrongly diagnosed, he insisted the new switch he bought was the problem. He returned the switch for another switch, and the car was perfect.
Moral of the story, even when you buy the parts, you need to know when the part is good.

Simple....

....take the list.....
.....go straight to the market....
.......buy all the required parts yourself.....
.......then give them to fix.....
.......pay for labour.......

C'est fini.....

****modified****

My brother's mechanic once charged him 12k for a particular motor part that he needed to change.....my bro simply went to mechanic village, got the required part for 2k and then gave it to the mechanic to fix it...

Have as many phone numbers of spare part dealers as possible and talk to them as if you are coming to buy the parts. That will give you an idea of of the current cost but sometimes allow the mechanic to buy it. They will treat your ride better if you allow them steal N2000 here and there... Stealing is in their blood just like majority of Nigerians. WE ARE FANTASTICALLY CORRUPT.

It's better you allow your mechanic buy those parts he'll need to replace by himself... I remember one man then when I was learning automobile mechanic before gaining admission... Over sabi dey worry d man... He wanted to service his car and he came with the wrong oil filter... My master told him the filter wouldn't work properly on the vehicle but this man insisted and the oil filter was used for him... Trust me he came back 3 days later to complain about engine malfunctioning. The engine later broke down and he paid to get him another Tokunbo engine just because of a #1000 oil filter...
Another thing is... Those guys selling spare parts are not smiling... They'll probably know that that a particular component or part might not work effectively on your vehicle but because they've seen you as a novice they can give u the wrong one ... I'm talking from the little experience I had then.

And for taking mechanics as not trust worthy.. How I wish you can understand that not all mechanics are the same .. My master will never force you to give him money to buy anything for u... You can go on and buy it yourself so far he's not going to take the blame he'll only advise you on the brand to buy.

I lik automobile mechanic job .. .. But trust me .. It's not easy.. I've seen threads here give on nairaland where people underrate mechanics as if they're not Human being.. How I wish u can go into this work for just 2 weeks .. Am sure you will run from it...

Do you reside in Nigeria at all? You will buy parts for an artsan in Nigeria Huh, you will cry. By the time you will buy same parts countless times, only you go give them money to HELP you repair your car. @ op jare, the best thing to do is to have a good customer among them, gain his or her loyalty, make him your friend, flex him if two of you drink (liquor), make sure that he knows d job and check him sometimes for excesses. They are the evil you can't avoid when it comes to maintenance of ur car. Meanwhile, there are some corporate companies handling such service now, they are more reliable but may be excessively expensive sometimes. But if peace is what you want, settle for them.

But not here in Nigeria oh. The automobile mechanics would prefer to buy the parts themselves so that they can "chop you mugu".
It is still better to give them the money to buy the parts for you than going yourself in Nigeria because most people know nothing about cars.
