Imo State was created on February 3rd 1976 out of the old east central state, by the then regime of General Multala Mohammed. Imo State is located in the South-eastern region of Nigeria, it is bordered by Abia State on the East, River – Niger and Delta State to the West, Anambra State on the North and Rivers State to the South. The capital of Imo State is Owerri, and Imo State is properly known as the eastern heartland. The state is named after the Imo River.
Later with the creation of more states in 1991 by General Ibrahim Babangida, Abia State was carried out from Imo State. Imo State is currently divided into 3 sectional zones namely (1) Owerri zone made up of 9 local governments, (2) Orlu Zone with 12 local Governments, and Okigwe zone with 6 local governments. Currently Imo State is divided into 27 local Governments areas.

Imo state which is one of the most entertainment states in Nigerian, has won some awards in recent times, one of which is the Award as the cleanest State in Nigeria, an Award given to the State in 2008 national Environmental Sanitation Day, celebrated in Abuja.
Presently under the Administration of Governor Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha, Imo State has become one of the most safest states to visit in Nigeria, and Owerri has also become one of the best tourist cities in Nigeria. also, on the area of education, Imo State remains the best, Imo State is one of the states that produces the highest number of WAEC candidates every year in Nigeria, and that shows the level of love the youths of the state have for education, in addition to that Imo State is also one of the states, if not the only state in Nigeria to give free education to its citizens from primary to the tertiary level, thanks to his Excellency Governor Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha.
Regardless of the achievements so far, we should also understand that for a state or nation to grow continuously in its development, it needs a leadership that believes in true dividend of democracy, a leadership that does not play politics with Governance, a leadership that strongly believes in continuity in good Governance.
Imo State will always need a kind of leadership that continues the good works, projects and agenda of their predecessors at the general interest of the citizens of the nation, not minding their predecessor, political party, religion and region.
Finally those at the leadership positions, the traditional leaders, church leaders, those elected or appointed to serve and represent the people and those who are also dreaming to serve and represent the people and those dreaming to become leaders in Imo State, should have the people as the central point of their action. Then there can be development. And on the other hand the good citizens of this country are made to be praying and support our leaders and not to put problems in their governance and administration. Together we can build a better Imo State of our dream.
Happy Celebration Imolites
