Pensioners, drenched in rain and shivering, on Monday waited for more than eight hours outside Oba Akinjobi old secretariat, Ikeja, Lagos, for a verification exercise that saw the collapse of at least four senior citizens.

The verification exercise was organised by the pension transitional arrangement directorate (PTAD).

It was aimed at identifying pensioners in the civil service to facilitate the payment of their benefits and entitlements, and also to flush out ghost pensioners.

Pensioners hobble in the rain to the location of the screening

But the exercise turned a gruelling one, with overstretched queues and senior citizens having to stand for as long as eight hours, yet not being attended to.

On Tuesday, they were eventually informed that the exercise had been cancelled.

A pensioner, in obvious anguish as he spoke to TheCable, said “they forget that one day they will grow up to be in our shoes and only then will they understand what this feels like”.

An aged woman awaits her turn

Another pensioner, with teary eyes, who also spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, said he came all the way from Ondo state and spent a lot to transport himself, yet the exercise was cancelled.

“People have been here since 7:00 am and now you tell us to go home, that we will be contacted if anything comes up; even though we were not contacted when the decision was made. How are we to believe that?” he asked.

One witness lamented the situation, saying older citizens need not be put through such distress.

“I saw people old enough to be my grandparents standing on long queues, soaking wet, all in the name of getting verified,” says Michael Olatubosun, a man who witnessed Monday’s sufferings of the aged former workers.

“Some could not stand for long due to health issues but they were not given a choice; they were forced to queue and this led to them being carried away in ambulances.

“This excuse is unacceptable; something needs to be done to help ease the process of verification. I hope this break is to help put things in order and make the verification exercise stress-free and better because this people have given the best of their years to the country and they need to be treated right.”

A man simply identified as Akintola, an official of the Lagos state government, said the order to suspend the exercise came “from above”.

He apologised for the inconvenience and said he received the order late, so it could not have been disseminated earlier.

God will judge them, yet these people handling the pension payments will still use the embezzled money to train up thier children and they will be expecting them to be meaningful in life; NEVER. The commitments, tears and suffering of these ex service men will judge them all. The people handling the payments doesn't want to pass through what these pensioners are passing through that is why they are stealing billions of naira and buying houses in Dubai, UK, USA etc. All is vain; they will enjoy on this planet earth and suffer eternity after death.

That is a consolatory lie.
Still a lie.
The leaders looters will be ALLOWED to steal enough so that they won't need to stand in the rain for their pension.

How sad!

As much as I sympathise with them I'd like to say that their affirmation is wrong! Most of these corrupt politicians would stash large stolen wealth away enough to feed their 3 generations.

Their pension bank account would be filled with cobwebs because that money would be chicken change. I just pray Buhari's anti corruption fight should be efficient enough to end this trend of thieving politicians we have.

Nigerians are expecting Karma to help them do justice while in other normal countries, the law does it.

The proposed 5000 naira for unemployed graduates should go to the elderly and disabled. These pensioners should be the first to be paid before other workers.

But Nigerians are short sighted. Current public servants strike everyday for salary increment instead of creating a strong union fighting for their future after service.

Don't be a fool. When they say that, they didn't mean poor. They meant old and Fragile and expecting their pension,no matter how small.

You think old age is child's play?

This unending verification exercise! Maybe by January there will be another one followed by yet another in October. And in 2018 another series of so- called verification would be conducted. This is the fate of these elderly people across nigeria after having put in 35 years in the public service. Everyone knows the guys committing fraud are there in the offices, but it is these elderly folks that are being subjected to the endless cycles of so- called verification year in year out.
