Adelani Adepegba, Abuja
The Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board has approved the suspension of four senior officers while the Controller-General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed in his capacity, also approved the suspension of 10 junior personnel of the prison.
This followed the escape of two high profile inmates, Solomon Amodu and Maxwell Ajukwu who were standing trial for culpable homicide from lawful custody in Kuje Medium Security Prison on June 24, 2016.
A statement on Monday in Abuja by the Prisons Service Public Relations Officer, Francis Enobore, said the affected officers and men include, the Officer in-charge of Kuje Prisons, DCP Musa Tanko; SIP Buhari Dogo; PIPs Stephen Edogbanya; Patrick Teru; IPs Usman Peter and Dennis Makum.
Others are IP Fassan Akin; SPAs Others are IP Fassan Akin; SPAs Daka James; Adamu Luka; SPA Zakari Yunasa ; PAs Asnamal Samuel, Ejegwa Patrick, Isah Ibrahim and Ngede Salifu
It said, “The suspension was sequel to the outcome of the preliminary investigation into the incident and in consonance with Prisons Service Rules 030406 (2008) Revised Version; the officers were suspended from duty to allow for unhindered trial process.
“The commissioned officers among them are to be served with letters of query while the junior staff will be given Form 96 (Charge Sheet ) to explain their role in the unfortunate saga.”
Meanwhile, efforts to recapture the fleeing prisoners in collaboration with sisters security agencies are on-going.
This is in addition to tightening security measures in prison formations nationwide to forestall a repeat of such incident, the prisons service said.
The statement said the CG solicited the cooperation of members of the public to volunteer useful information that could assist in the re-arrest of the fugitives.

This is nice development, the time for negligence of duty is gone. Everyone must account for his deeds, Nigeria is sitting on the keg of powder if drastic steps are not taken. If Nigeria army can be corrupted then no other paramilitary is safe. We need to restructure our system to make it more tough like private setting

The junior officers in Prisons keep bearing the brunt of the negligence of the Senior officers to improve the security measures of prison facilities across the country by recruiting more capable hands or upgrading the security of all prisons in the nation with the use of modern technology and facilities to help ease our archaic and manual security system.

In serious countries, the pictures and other details of the escapees would have been in full circulation (in our major languages) in all the print and electronic media all over the country, INTERPOL would have been notified, the whole area would have been in lock-down, roadblocks mounted and leaflets distributed to the masses to be on the look-out for them. But what did we find? The Prisons authorities denied that a jail-break had taken place when the news first broke, now they are dealing with their officers.

With the way this issue is being handled, they are encouraging more jail-breaks. In actual fact, the way our security apparatus is configured in this country, we are encouraging people to commit crime because there is no deterrent factor. Potential criminals should always think thrice before committing any crime because it should be made known to all that criminals can only run but not hide from the long arm of the law.

People readily forget the above while looking for a scapegoat to lynch yet they forget how they hustled with money to buy job "slots" for themselves and their friends, families and relatives regardless of how unqualified and unfit for the job they were too.

Besides that, people have yet to see the power of the polity in determining the kind of military that secures and polices them via sensible legislation and advocacy!

How do you expect the best from an over-politicized para-military agency divided along various lines whilst being seriously being oppressed and denied rights by their Overseeing Board at the Interior Ministry ?! How do they serve best when their morale is at an all time low!

Their training budgets' eaten, they're poorly equipped, staffing is skewed, they witness constant nepotical shufflings on the job ; how do they deliver at par with their colleagues in other sane countries?

The Board was afflicted with serious backwardness under Abbah Moro aand none of the Agencies under him have recovered since.

Arbitrary pay cuts, allowance seizures, promotion scams, nepotical handling of staff training &posting; wanton oppression etc are the order of the day. And these guys had no means to seeking redress. Every little thing is branded MUTINY.

There is a lot of rot in there. They need a complete service reform and overhaul!
