Over the years, Nigeria has been one of the highest producers of plantain and banana yet this noble produce has never been exported, production remained irrational as its either too much in the market at some times causing glut and wastage or very scarce at other times becoming expensive. There is no clear policy from the government on the industry though individuals have embarked on massive campaign for increase in production and the potentials in the industry, government has played negligible role in the production, processing and marketing of the crop that has been tagged has the third staple food in the country. Cooperatives and associations on these crops are hardly heard or known. It is out of passion for these crops and the huge potential the industry can impact on the economy of the country especially now that its struggling that this association is founded to create a new course and way forward. The aims and objectives of this association are:
1. To organise all existing and intending plantain and banana farmers, processors and marketers.
2. To provide a forum or avenue where members can speak with one voice.
3. To set and improve the standard of production, processing and marketing of plantain and banana which are given to the public, ensure even distribution of produce and maintain fair price profitable to stakeholders and convenient for buyers.
4. To improve plantain and banana industry education at all levels throughout the federation.
5. To participate in planning, policy making and administration of plantain and banana industry at all levels of government.
6. To provide a forum whereby understanding, fellowship and unity can be achieved and maintained at all times amongst all members of plantain and banana industry stakeholders.
7. To raise the status of plantain and banana industry, seek loans, grants and incentives from government, non governmental organisations, financial institutions and international donors.
8. To extend protection:- legal or otherwise.
9. To uphold the international standard of cultivation, harvesting, processing and marketing of plantain and banana to facilitate exportation and balance of trade.
10. To affiliate with All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) and or fraternize with any other association relevant to plantain and banana industry in Nigeria and international bodies with similar aims and objectives.
11. To establish and maintain good relationship with members of the public, other commodity associations and all levels of government.

EQUITY CROWDFUNDING FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRO SECTOR DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA; A CASE STUDY OF PLANTAIN AND BANANA INDUSTRY.
Equity crowdfunding is a mechanism that enables broad groups of investors to fund startup companies and small businesses in return for equity. Investors give money to a business and receive ownership of a small piece of that business. If the business succeeds, then its value goes up, as well as the value of a share in that business.
Coverage of equity crowdfunding indicates that its potential is greatest with startup businesses that are seeking smaller investments to achieve establishment, while follow-up funding (required for subsequent growth) may come from other sources. The inputs of the individuals in the crowd trigger the crowdfunding process and influence the ultimate value of the offerings or outcomes of the process. Each individual acts as an agent of the offering, selecting and promoting the projects in which they believe.
An individual who takes part in crowdfunding initiatives tends to reveal several distinct traits: innovative orientation, which stimulates the desire to try new modes of interacting with firms and other consumers; social identification with the content, cause or project selected for funding, which sparks the desire to be a part of the initiative; (monetary) exploitation, which motivates the individual to participate by expecting a payoff. Developed economy like USA and developing economy like Ghana have being using this model for many years, in Nigeria equity crowdfunding has been a popular method of generating capital in the financial sector however its impact in the agro sector is negligible.

Plantain and banana industry is a broad sector with a huge potential but it's unfortunate that the industry has suffered neglect for years, according to FAO plantain and banana can be processed into 20 products yet in Nigeria there is glut and wastages. The three sectors in the industry viz; Farming, value addition (processing and packaging) and marketing (local and international) can create wealth and jobs for Nigerians especially the youths and give revenues to the government. The challenges facing the industry include but not limited to over dependence on rain by farmers which is the primary cause of glut, poor farm management due to inadequate knowledge of plantain and banana cultivation practices by most farmers, inadequate funding and lack of political will to drive the industry forward by the government.
As individual(s), stakeholder(s), association(s) and lovers of plantain and banana and their derivatives, it's time we stood up to turn around the fortune of this industry and harness it's full potential.
THE WAY FORWARD.
Our economy is in recession, one of the most potent ways to get out of it is rapid development of vibrant medium scale industries in which low and medium income earners can invest and make profits as alternative source of income. It costs about #1.5M to establish and run a standard 2500 suckers capacity farm on 3 acres of land with irrigation facility, proper farm management and security. This investment can bring over 100% return on investment (ROI) in a year with subsequent revenue in less than 8months for years depending on the management of the farm and capacity for expansion. It costs #2M to establish a mini plantain and banana plant with #3M for purchasing raw materials and running cost making #5M total, this investment can bring about 200% return on investment(ROI) in a year with expansion capacity.
Re: Plantain And Banana Farmers, Processors And Marketers Association. by Erukulele(m): 4:49am On Oct 28, 2016
Using the stated capital above, with #30,000 which an average unemployed youth can spend in less than a month attending job interviews or submitting application letters, 50 of them can successful establish a model farm with proper coordination. With #100,000 which many medium income earners spend on frivolities, 50 of them can successfully establish and run a mini plant with proper coordination, please note that the higher the stake by each investor the lower their number. These investments do not only make it possible for us to stand head to head with international standard and practices in the industry, it boost our economy and enable us to have accurate data on the industry.
Many would be wondering how the people will do it in terms of managing the fund and investment, though the concept, equity crowdfunding has been discussed earlier, let me elucidate more. For crowdfunding projects, three important factors are necessary; project initiator(s), offer receiver(s) and a platform. With so many groups and platforms on the social media, those who are interested in initiating projects should have adequate knowledge of the sector they chose, prepare simple and comprehensible business plan, be very sure of the feasibility of the project and be sincere. Those receiving the offer must understand the business, know his or her profit on the capital invested with exit strategy and have trust in the initiator(s) and the success of the project. By the year 2018 we should be able to meet the quantity of plantain and banana needed locally throughout a year, tackle glut, reduce wastage, create jobs and revitalize plantain and banana industry in Nigeria. God bless Nigeria.
No farmers! No Nation!
Great farmers! Great Nation!
Innovative farmers! Robust Economy!
