Ghana is a west African country rich in culture and heritage. For residents, fun seekers and visitors to Ghana, there are several places to unwind in the major cities, especially Accra, Tamale, Kumasi and Takoradi. However, when it comes to having a good time, Accra leads with its elegant display culture and vibrant nightlife.
If you are a culture enthusiast who craves to have an encounter with Ghana’s traditions and history. Here are 5 places to experience the art and culture of Ghana.
The Artists Alliance Gallery
The Artists Alliance Gallery showcases traditional crafts, such as traditional wears, Ashanti drums and masks as well as contemporary Ghanaian art.
Visit the Artists Alliance Gallery for a trip down memory lane with a collection of political satires. The Alliance Artist Gallery exhibits the work of some of Ghana’s renowned artists, such as George Hughes and Owusu Ankomah.
National Theatre, Accra
Located near the Independence Avenue in Victoriaborg, Accra the theater edifice itself is a work of art with the features of a giant ship.
It is the home of the National Dance Company, the National Theatre players and the National Symphony Orchestra. Visit the National Theater to enjoy fun packed programmes by national and international artists.
Elmina
Being an former slavery hub, everywhere you go in this pretty quiet town reflects its slave history and past.
Elmina is a popular tourist destination in Ghana. It features landmarks such as Castles, Forts and Churches. The main tourist attractions in Elmina are the Elmina Castle, Dutch Cemetery, the Elmina Java Museum,Portuguese Church and Fort St. Jago (Fort Conraadsburg).
A day’s visit to Badagry is not enough to fully explore this coastal town, the resorts in Elmina are renowned for offering the best accommodation in a serene environment.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park
The Kwame Nkrumah memorial park is a testament to the life of Ghana’s founding leader and hero. Located on the old polo grounds to the west of Accra metropolitan Assembly, it was at this place Nkrumah declared independence in 1957. The memorial park is made up of the mausoleum and a small museum. The Mausoleum is the resting place of Ghana’s hero. The museum is home to the Dr Kwame’s Car and other personal items, especially letters.
National Events take place at the memorial park on the Independence Anniversary celebrations and the Celebration of Emancipation Day on 1 August.
