Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has shrugged off calls to restructure Nigeria saying it is not helpful and will not make any difference.
The vice president made the remark weekend while delivering the second foundation lecture of the Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande.

The title of the lecture was “The Future is Here Earlier Than We Thought.” The call for restructuring Nigeria has been a recurring decimal and of late reignited by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.
In a speech at launch of a book: ‘We Are Biafrans,’ in Abuja in June, Atiku said what Nigeria required most was restructuring of the federation.
The increasing wave of agitations and even militancy across the country, he said, called “for a restructuring and renewal of our federation to make it less centralised, less suffocating and less dictatorial in the affairs of our country’s constituent units and localities.”
His remarks were immediately praised by the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, and the apexsocio-political association of the Igbo, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo who argued that the move would provide solutions to the country’s problems.
However, the vice president, while answering a question on restructuring, stated: “Even if states are given half of the resources of the federal government, the situation will not change.
According to Osinbajo, “The only change is to diversify the economy.”
The vice president also stated that the country was not earning enough from oil and taxes anymore.
He noted the nation was blessed and that every state could feed itself and export products if the citizens engaged in agriculture.
He disclosed that this year, the Federal Government would establish technology hubs across Nigeria. “Two super hubs in Abuja and Lagos and six regional hubs in the six geo-political zones. In partnership with several technology companies the hubs will be fully resourced with infrastructure and capacity building,” he said.
He added that in few weeks’ time, the government would begin to train a pool of 100,000 software developers, hardware service professionals, animators, graphic artists, building services professionals, artisans and others.
He said in its quest to make Nigeria the technology hub of Africa, the government had launched a special presidential initiative on technology and start-ups.
He said: “50 of the most innovative technology start-ups will soon be invited to the Presidential Villa to meet with major technology and innovation companies as well as collaborate with the federal government. The closest position to that of the confidential secretary now is an executive assistant who is expected to have strong technology skills.”
Osinbajo said understanding the way technology works and thinking out of the box is the way to go in today’s world.
“Whatever you choose to do, be technology savvy and understand its best uses in your chosen discipline. You must learn to be a versatile operator, not a mono-skilled graduate. Everyone has a right to be rich, age is not a barrier,” he said.
He said it was in recognition of the role of innovation and technology in the nation’s economic growth plan that the federal government provided extensively for technology and innovation in the 2016 budget.
Daily Trust reports that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, had at a book launch in Abuja called for restructuring of the country in line with the aspirations of its component units, describing it as the only answer to the current agitation for a Biafra Republic, among others.
“The call for restructuring is even more relevant today in the light of the governance and economic challenges facing us. And the rising tide of agitations, some militant and violent, require a re-set in our relationships as a united nation,” he said.

The calls for the restructuring of the country had also attracted varied comments from Nigerians, including Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, who backs the calls and Prof Tam David-West, who is against it.

Very stupid comment from the mere commissioner.

Wasn't restructuring the country amongst the promises of the APC?

Coming from the lips of an acclaimed Professor? Indeed evil communications corrupt good manners.

Nigeria is due for a thorough restructuring. The current feeding bottle unitary system hasn't worked and will never work. We must devolve more powers to the states and local governments.

There's no way a state government will have to get orders from Abuja before asking the military to defend innocent people from being killed by herdsmen. There's no reason why a state shouldn't harness the vast resources within its borders to boost its economy.

And it's criminal for every other region to continue feeding fat off the wealth found in the another region.

Nigeria has NO FUTURE with this current system. True federalism will quieten all these agitation and calls for secession. True federalism will make it easier for the local people to deal decisively with their corrupt regional leaders.

Nigeria can never be great without a restructuring. Professor Osinbajo may be a professor of law but he goofed on this one.

Nigeria isn't united and will never be as long as it keeps this wrong approach to governance. The can't be ONE single solution to our problems. No one President at Aso Rock can solve all of our problems. We need to give way for true federalism. No two regions are the same. Every region should be empowered and allowed to solve their problems their own way. We are too divided and distinct to be this close. It will NEVER work.

Nigeria won't achieve greatness by forcing an imaginary unity. The centre is suffocating us all. Buhari won't solve our problems. No single President can. We need to change the structure.

The problem is that he doesn't even comprehend what restructuring means and entails. It is not about giving d states half of d FG's resources, infact that's an ignorant statement from a supposedly learned VP.

He noted the nation was blessed and that every state could feed itself and export products if the citizens engaged in agriculture.

How can d citizens get engaged in agriculture when the major agrarian communities in d middle belt are being ransacked by fulani herdsmen and the FG doesn't particularly care? People are living in morbid fear! They have been dispossessed of their properties, killed, raped, maimed et al. Why then does he sound like citizens are uninterested in agriculture?

APC has already denied all campaign promises and likened it as promises a man made to a lady at the point he's off loading his sperm.

I am so embarrassed the guy is making this kind of statement.

I know he can't say something contrary to what his boss has said. He should have just kept quiet.

Only people in Aso Rock/abuja seem to always want to continue with this rent system.

Its a shame.

These people are not MOG, but MOD. There is no true born again who will willingly be unequally yoked with unbeliever.

There is nothing like religious harmony. The sole aim of Christianity is to preach and convert the unbeliever. I have never heard of those so called acclaimed MOG converting their unbelievers friends into Christianity.

See how an acclaimed pastor is lie in to himself and disgracing Christianity

It would be easier to change our mindset if we change the structure. As long as we have this rent structure we will continue to grop in the dark like we are doing.

If u ask me, One of the greatest gain in fiscal federalism is State police. Imagine a governor waiting for a commissioner in Abuja to signal the ones in Benue to attack criminals that is operating in his backyard. And another is Power, Places like Lagos should have 24hrs power supply cos I know with their revenue they can do it , but when we want all part of Nigeria to develop at once, using the scope of a federating unit then we would all sit down and wait for the federating unit to do their Magic, Like we are waiting for them in Power and dollar exchange.

One Politician from the North heading NDDC stuff, was on AIT shouting Nigeria is indisolable in the sense that all part of Nigeria will contribute and build every region till Nigeria flow with milk and honey, I was like what are some people thinking.. In 100 yrs to come some states In North cannot be Like Lagos and some states in south. It cant happen.

So it should be like these...
Allow states to develop with its Resources.
To re install peace, we have to support state police so that we can tackle security problem from grassroot
It will also help in tackling corruption. Imagine when everybody is blaming Buhari(federal unit) whereas the problem is from their state . All they need is take their complain to their state not central where matters are already congested.

I stand to be corrected , But Osibanjo can't do anything if his Boss Buhari is against the move.
