Ese Osuru: Northern elites, Kannywood stars, ladies swarm Yunusa Yellow as he returns to Kano

When in late February, the story of a teenage girl, Ese Oruru, 15, allegedly kidnapped from Bayelsa State broke, Nigerians were divided along the Northern and Southern divide.

While one half was furious that Ese Osuru was abducted by Yunusa Dahiru aka Yellow, 25, those in the other category insisted that Ese was in love and voluntarily travelled to Kano with her boyfriend.

On February 29, former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, announced that Ese who had been living in Kano since August 2015 was in the custody of the Force at a safe location.


On Tuesday March 1, wearing a white hijab, Ese Osuru arrived Force Headquarters in Abuja at about 1pm, escorted by a Special Police team from Zone 1 headquarters, Kano, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police.

After her ‘freedom’, verbal attacks followed with accusations and counter-accusations made by families of Ese and Yunusa.

In one of his reactions, Dahiru Bala, said his son, Yunusa can never marry Ese, adding that he did not support the relationship because of its illegality and that it was against his religion.


“There was no marriage between my son and Ese Oruru because it is illegal.”


“I promptly reported the matter to the village head and on their arrival they were taken to his home who in turn reported to the District Head at Kura,” 55 year-old Bala added.

Reactions also came from non-governmental organisations, religious groups, clerics, among others.

Instance: some Islamic clerics insisted that Yellow’s action was against Islamic practices; similarly Arewa Youth Consultative Forum condemned the act while fiery General Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, demanded the ‘Sharia punishment’, suggesting that Yunusa Dahiru’s manhood be cut off.

But last week, respite finally came for Yunusa after a Federal High Court in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa capital, granted him bail with stringent conditions. He had been remanded at the Okaka Medium Security Prisons.

On his arrival in Kano on Sunday, Yunusa told Daily Trust that“I have learnt my lessons. This case has taught me a lot of lessons and shaped my life. I would be cautious on how to relate with others in my future life.”

“I thanked everybody that directly or indirectly assisted me in this case. I am the happiest person today because I am reuniting with my family after spending months in prison. Though the case is not over but I am confident the truth would prevail.”

However, Yunusa Yellow is now the talk of town in Kano and has become a ladies man.

On Monday, a source confided in our correspondent that Yellow is “a celebrity of sorts, such that rich and influential northerners have reached out to him through words of encouragement, gifts and offers to host him”.

Asked if the Yunusa/Ese affair could still blossom, the source with links to the family told DAILY POST that: “He is yet to make up his mind. In fact, some Northern elites are desirous of getting him a graduate to dissuade him from marrying Ese Osuru since the Niger Delta people are against the relationship.

“Already, there are well-educated girls, including unnamed Kannywood actress who have shown interest to marry Yunusa Yellow. Ladies are now all over him. He has always been a handsome young man…you should know the meaning of yellow.

“Let’s Ese’s parent tell the truth about what she told them. Ese Osuru still feels sad that their affection is being ridiculed. And Northerners feel that the Southerners hate them because of the elopement.”

DAILY POST recalls that Ese Osuru delivered a baby girl on Thursday May 26 at the Bayelsa Government House Clinic after she went into labour at her Police Officers Mess temporary residence.

It was reported that Yunusa named the child Fatima, meaning ‘captivating’ in Arabic.

However, Yunusa Yellow is now the talk of town in Kano and has become a ladies man.

Common sense should tell you that the young man is yet to face trial and his guilt is yet to be determined and he is innocent till proven guilty.

A video just surfaced showing 14 year old Ese Oruru, arguing with officials of Kano Shari’ah Commission and the police, when she was asked to enter a police vehicle.

Though the conversation is in Hausa language, her body language shows that she was defiant.

Premium Times reports that she refused to return home, without her alleged abductor, Yunusa Yellow.

An audio recording which was obtained from Premium Times also, revealed that Ese did not want to return home.
She also denied reports that she was abducted, saying she wanted to stay in Kano.
